Campgrounds and RV parks near Williamston, NC

The Roanoke River is the main draw. Paddling, fishing, and birding are all accessible from town, and the river system includes camping platforms along the water and its tributaries for kayak-based overnights. Moratoc Park and River Landing provide a boat ramp, a kayak launch, and a river boardwalk within town limits. The Skewarkee Rail Trail is a paved path just under a mile long, running from downtown Williamston to the Roanoke River and connecting to the town's two river parks. The Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge, headquartered in Windsor with tracts spread along the lower river, protects roughly 21,000 acres of bottomland hardwood forest and supports one of the highest densities of nesting songbirds in North Carolina. Other nearby stops include Fort Branch, a preserved Confederate earthworks fort on the river near Hamilton that opens to the public on the last Saturday of each month from April through October, and the Senator Bob Martin Eastern Agricultural Center, which hosts rodeos, horse shows, and equestrian events.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel around Williamston. March through May brings mild days, moderate humidity, and strong birding along the Roanoke River, with songbird migration peaking from mid-April into May. Wildflowers and comfortable overnight temperatures overlap with the shoulder-season pricing at most private parks. Summer is hot and humid. Daytime highs commonly reach the upper 80s in July and August, thunderstorms are frequent, and biting insects are active near the river bottoms. Sites remain available at most private parks, but shaded pads and reliable electric hookups for air conditioning are worth prioritizing. Late summer through October is Atlantic hurricane season, and tropical systems occasionally track inland across eastern North Carolina, so travelers should watch NHC advisories and campground closure notices. Winter is short and mild by regional standards, but wet. Some seasonal amenities scale back, and Fort Branch is closed from November through March. Snow is rare, averaging about an inch a year, though hard freezes do occur and can affect water hookups at rural sites.

Sites near Williamston are generally level, on grass or gravel, with full or partial hookups at the closer-in parks. Cell coverage is reliable in town and along US-64 and US-17 but can thin out on rural approach roads and inside the wildlife refuge tracts. Expect mosquitoes, ticks, and biting flies from late spring through early fall, especially near the Roanoke River and its swamps. Bring repellent, treat clothing for tick protection, and check pets after walks. Black bears are present in the surrounding game lands, so store food and trash securely. Groceries, fuel, propane, and basic RV supplies are available in Williamston itself, and Greenville is about 25 miles southwest for larger stores and service shops. Roads in the area are flat and RV-friendly, though some rural park approaches are narrow two-lane routes with soft shoulders.
