Camping near Adena, Ohio
Adena sits in Jefferson County in eastern Ohio, in the rolling Appalachian foothills just west of the Ohio River. The area puts RV renters within a short drive of both Ohio state parks and Ohio River valley destinations in West Virginia, making it a practical base for a long weekend or a week-long loop.
Campground options range from small private RV parks to state park campgrounds with electric and non-electric sites. Big Gs RV Campground and Zion Retreat and RV Park serve travelers looking for private-park amenities close to town, while Main - Jefferson Lake State Park offers a rustic setting suitable for both family and equestrian camping. Barkcamp State Park, west of Adena near Belmont, is another Ohio Department of Natural Resources option with a lake and developed campground.
Across the river, Grand Vue Park in Moundsville, West Virginia adds cabins, RV sites, and adventure activities to the mix, giving families a second style of trip without a long drive.
Things to do around Adena
Water and trails drive most trips here. Non-motorized boats and boats with electric motors up to 4 horsepower are permitted on 17-acre Jefferson Lake, which offers catches of largemouth bass, catfish, bluegill, and redear sunfish. Roughly 18 miles of multi-use trails wind through the park for hikers and horseback riders. Barkcamp State Park adds a swim beach, boat rentals, and mountain-bike trails on its own lake.
Families looking for more structured activity can head to Grand Vue Park for zip lines, an aerial adventure course, disc golf, and mountain-bike trails. History-minded travelers can add stops in Wheeling and Steubenville, and the Ohio River scenic byways make good day drives.

Summer daytime temperatures are warm and humid, thunderstorms are common, and lakes and swim beaches are fully open. Book state park sites well in advance for July and August weekends.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV renters who want cooler weather and open sites. Fall color in the Appalachian foothills typically peaks in mid-to-late October, and hunting seasons begin in autumn, so campers should note posted areas. At Jefferson Lake, hunting is permitted in designated areas, and many do not open for hunting until October 15.
Winter camping is limited. The campground at Main - Jefferson Lake State Park operates year-round within the 933-acre park, but water systems, showers, and beaches at most Ohio state parks shut down after the fall season, and some private parks close for the winter.

How to book
Ohio state park campgrounds, including Barkcamp State Park and Main - Jefferson Lake State Park, are booked through the ODNR reservation system. Reservations may be made up to six months in advance online or by calling (866) 644-6727, and reservations are required at Jefferson Lake. Popular summer weekends are often claimed the day the six-month window opens.
Private parks such as Big Gs RV Campground and Zion Retreat and RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Grand Vue Park in West Virginia uses its own reservation system for RV sites, cabins, and activities.
For holiday weekends, book both the campground and any add-on activities, such as zip lines or boat rentals, at the same time.
What to expect
State park campgrounds in this part of Ohio lean rustic. At Main - Jefferson Lake State Park, a small number of electric sites sit alongside non-electric sites, with vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings with cooking grates, and horse tie lines provided. Showers are not available, and water comes from non-threaded spigots that sometimes require holding a hose while filling tanks. A dump station is available on site.
Sites vary in size and grade. The campground accommodates RVs up to 45 feet alongside tent camping on a mix of level and sloped terrain, so larger rigs should call ahead about specific site dimensions.
Private parks near Adena typically offer full hookups, showers, and laundry, which suit renters who want easier RV amenities.
