Campgrounds and RV parks near Albany, OH

Hiking and paddling anchor most trips. Zaleski State Forest carries two backpack trails, a 23.5-mile route and a 10-mile day loop, plus 50 miles of bridle trails and a 16-site horse camp, so day hikes and horseback outings are easy to combine from a single basecamp. The 120-acre Lake Hope has one boat ramp along State Route 278 by the dam, permits hand-powered and electric motor-only boats, and the Lake Hope Boathouse rents canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, pedal boats, and pontoon boats in spring, summer, and fall. History sits alongside the outdoors. The park's forested region is marked by remnants of abandoned mining and iron-producing industries, including the historic Hope Furnace. Hocking Hills State Park, with its cliff trails and waterfalls, is a common day trip north.

Lake Hope is the most flexible option for shoulder-season and off-season RV trips. The campground is open year-round, and a portion of it with both electric and non-electric sites remains open through winter. Spring and fall bring the most reliable weather for hiking, with wildflowers along the ridges in April and May and cooler, drier days for leaf color from mid-October into early November. Summer is the busy stretch. Weekends at Lake Hope and Hocking Hills Jellystone Park fill well in advance, and humidity, thunderstorms, and afternoon crowds are typical. The Lake Hope Boathouse rents boats in spring, summer, and fall, so paddling access follows the same window. The Zaleski hunter camp runs on a hunting calendar rather than a standard camping season. Atkinson Ridge Hunters Camp is operational one day before the start of squirrel season until one day after the close of grouse season, opens again 14 days before spring wild turkey season and closes the day after that season ends, and campers must be legally licensed hunters. Non-hunters should plan around Lake Hope or the horse camp instead.

The terrain is steep and heavily wooded. Lake Hope sits in the valley of Big Sandy Run, in a rugged, heavily forested setting traversed by steep gorges and narrow ridges, so expect winding approach roads and tight interior loops. Larger Class A rigs should confirm site length before booking. Facilities at Lake Hope are full-service by state-park standards. Amenities include heated showerhouses with flush toilets, pit latrines and potable water spigots throughout, an RV dump station, laundry facilities, and every campsite has a picnic table and fire ring. An on-site general store sells firewood and supplies, and the Stone Terrace Restaurant in the rustic lodge offers dining. Zaleski's forest camps are rustic. Atkinson Ridge Hunters Camp offers pit latrines, picnic tables and fire rings, with no hookups and limited cell service. Pack water, groceries, and fuel before heading in.
