Campgrounds and RV parks near Amherst, OH

Amherst sits in Lorain County, Ohio, roughly a half-hour southwest of Cleveland and a short drive from the Lake Erie shoreline. The area works well as an RV base for families combining lake-town day trips, sandstone-quarry history, and quiet inland camping in the Wellington and Vermilion River corridors. Findley State Park, an 838-acre park located in Wellington, Ohio, less than an hour southwest of Cleveland, is the largest public campground in the region and the main draw for state-park campers. Private RV options fill in around it: Timber Ridge Campground on Portman Road in South Amherst, Riverview RV Park and Marina on the Vermilion River in Vermilion, American Wilderness Campground, and Claremar Twin Lakes Camping Resort. Most private parks in the area lean toward seasonal sites with a limited number of nightly spots, so short-term RV renters should book ahead. The Findley campground is open year-round, while several nearby private parks run a warm-season schedule that closes in mid to late October.

Findley campsites may be reserved up to 6 months in advance by calling 1-866-644-6727 or through the Ohio State Parks reservation site. Sites vary in size and privacy despite costing the same, so it is worth reviewing the campground map before locking in a site number. Full-hookup sites are limited and go early for summer weekends. Walk-in camping is available at Findley on a first-come, first-served basis: non-electric sites 1 through 27 and electric sites 180, 181, 182, 183, and ADA 170, with self-registration envelopes at the camp office. Private parks near Amherst, including Timber Ridge Campground, Riverview RV Park and Marina, American Wilderness Campground, and Claremar Twin Lakes Camping Resort, take bookings directly through their own websites or by phone, with many sites held long-term for seasonal campers.
