Camping near Andersonville, Ohio
Andersonville sits in Ross County in south-central Ohio, a short drive north of Chillicothe and within reach of several state parks in the Scioto River Valley. The area works as a practical base for RV travelers heading into Ohio's Appalachian foothills, with a mix of state-run campgrounds and private resorts inside a roughly 30-mile radius.
Great Seal State Park sits adjacent to Sugarloaf Mountain and offers scenic views of the Scioto Valley below, on the edge of one of Ohio's best wildlife areas. To the south, Scioto Trail State Park sits within the 9,000-acre Scioto Trail State Forest in the wooded hills of Ross County, with ridgetops and wooded valleys above the Scioto River. Northwest of Andersonville, A.W. Marion State Park is a small 309-acre park with a quiet atmosphere, and Hargus Lake provides 145 acres of water, boat launching and public docks.
Walnut Creek Campground and Resort and Lake Hill Campground round out the private options, giving families full-hookup alternatives when state park sites fill up on weekends.
Things to do around Andersonville
Trails dominate the outdoor scene. Great Seal State Park has 23 miles of hiking and multi-use trails, most of them challenging and crossing wooded, hilly terrain. Scioto Trail State Park adds several miles of hiking and bridle trails leading to ridge overlooks with views of the Scioto River Valley. Mountain bikers and equestrians share much of this network.
Paddling and fishing anchor the lake-based activities. Caldwell Lake at Scioto Trail State Park allows hand-powered vessels or electric-only motors, has one boat ramp, and kayaks, canoes and paddle boats can be rented seasonally from the campground check-in station. Anglers enjoy some of central Ohio's finest fishing at Hargus Lake, which has been stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish.
History rounds out a day trip: Hopewell Culture National Historical Park sits just south near Chillicothe, with earthworks now recognized as a World Heritage Site.
