Camping near Bellville, Ohio
Bellville sits in Richland County in north-central Ohio, at I-71 Exit 165 on State Route 97, the main corridor into the Mohican region. The route runs east from I-71 through Bellville and Butler, then south on Bunkerhill South Road to reach the Mohican-area parks and campgrounds. That location puts a mix of state park, private RV park, and reservoir campground options within a short drive.
Closest to town, River Trail Crossing RV Park sits on the Clear Fork River just off Route 97, with direct access to the paved Richland B&O bike trail. The park is a privately owned campground offering full hookup sites with water, electric, and sewer, pull-through sites with 50 amp service, and primitive tent sites, and it operates from April 15 through October 15. A few miles east, the Butler / Mohican KOA Journey sits about two miles off Route 97 and adds resort-style amenities for families.
For state-park camping, Malabar Farm State Park and Mohican State Park are both within about 15 miles, and Charles Mill Lake Park (Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District) lies northeast toward Mifflin. Together they cover everything from primitive tent sites to full-hookup RV loops.
Things to do around Bellville
The Richland B&O Trail is the local anchor for cycling. The 18-mile paved trail follows a former Baltimore & Ohio Railroad route between Butler and Mansfield, crossing the Mohican River and passing through Bellville at a historic depot with restrooms and parking. Riders can roll off River Trail Crossing RV Park straight onto the trail.
Mohican State Park delivers the region's marquee outdoor day. The Clear Fork of the Mohican River carves a narrow gorge through hemlock-covered slopes, and the adjacent Mohican-Memorial State Forest adds extensive trail systems for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The Clear Fork River is one of only three Ohio streams stocked with brown trout, and local outfitters run tubing and canoe trips.
Malabar Farm State Park adds a working-farm and history stop. Visitors can tour the 32-room Big House built by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louis Bromfield, and the outbuildings and pastures still house chickens, goats, and beef cattle. Charles Mill Lake supports fishing and low-horsepower boating on 1,350 acres.

The core camping season runs roughly April through October. River Trail Crossing operates April 15 through October 15, and summer weekends are the busiest window across the region. Fall color in the Clear Fork Gorge and the Maple Sugaring Festival at Malabar Farm in early spring are the two big off-peak draws.
Mohican is one of Ohio's most-reserved state parks, so timing matters. Reservations are required through ReserveOhio, walk-in camping is not available, campsites can be reserved up to six months in advance, and weekend reservations carry a two-night minimum. Reservations are essentially required for summer stays, and the campground fills quickly.
Shoulder-season travel changes what is open. During the winter camping season at Mohican, facilities may be limited: full-service sites do not have water at the site and fees are reduced accordingly. Malabar Farm's primitive campground is walk-in and first-come, first-served, with limited winter availability, so plan ahead if traveling outside the main season.
How to book
Reservation systems differ by operator, so plan by campground. Mohican State Park campsite reservations may be made up to six months in advance online through ReserveOhio or by calling (866) 644-6727, and cabins may be reserved up to one year in advance of the arrival date. Malabar Farm's primitive campground is walk-in only and operates first-come, first-served, so no online reservation is needed for a tent or equestrian site.
Charles Mill Lake Park is booked through the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District rather than the state. MWCD's system lets guests view available nights up to 12 months ahead, check-in for camping and cabins is 4:00 PM, camping check-out is 2:00 PM, quiet hours run 11 PM to 7 AM, and pets must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet.
Book the Butler / Mohican KOA Journey through koa.com or the KOA app, and River Trail Crossing RV Park directly with the park. Riverfront sites at both private parks are limited and go first.
What to expect on site
Hookups and site style vary widely. The main Class A campground at Mohican State Park has 153 sites with electric hookups and 33 sites with full-service hookups, each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, and facilities include modern shower houses, an RV dump station, and a camp store. Up to two pets are allowed per site, and from Memorial Day through Labor Day, day visitors are not permitted to drive through the campground.
Malabar Farm State Park is a smaller, more rustic option. Its 15-site primitive campground is walk-in only, with fire rings, picnic tables, hitching posts, gravel parking pads, pressurized water, and a self-composting restroom, and there are no electric or water hookups at the sites. Cell coverage is spotty, with no AT&T signal reported at the campground.
Charles Mill Lake Park runs two campgrounds, Main Camp and Eagle Point, with a combined total of more than 400 campsites and three patio cabins. Electric campsites offer 30-amp service, and the lake carries a 10 hp boating limit.
