Campgrounds and RV parks near Bidwell, OH

Water recreation drives most trips. Jackson Lake covers 242 acres with a swimming beach, fishing, and an ADA-accessible boat launch, and Lake Alma allows non-powered watercraft and boats with electric motors, with a launch ramp on the northeast edge of the lake. Anglers can expect bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish in both lakes. Hikers have options at every scale. A 2.5-mile hiking trail winds through the woodlands at Jackson Lake, and three picnic shelters are available for day use. Zaleski State Forest covers roughly 28,000 acres and encompasses Lake Hope State Park, with a 23.5-mile backpack trail, 50 miles of bridle trails, a horse camp, and a shooting range. The historic Moonville Tunnel, on an abandoned B&O railroad right-of-way, is a popular day-trip destination reached on foot or by horseback. Across the river, Point Pleasant offers the Mothman Museum and river walk.

Peak camping season in southeastern Ohio runs from late spring through mid-fall. State park campgrounds see the heaviest bookings on summer weekends and holiday periods, when sites can fill months ahead. Weekdays are noticeably quieter, and shoulder-season visits in May and October pair mild weather with fewer crowds. Operating windows vary by campground. Jackson Lake State Park is open seasonally from April through December, with reservations required through ReserveOhio.com and no walk-in or self-registration. Lake Alma State Park's campground is open year round, with reservations available up to six months in advance. In the winter months at Lake Alma, weather permitting, visitors can enjoy cross-country skiing, ice skating, and ice fishing. Around Point Pleasant, the third weekend in September brings a major surge in demand for the Mothman Festival, which commemorates the 1966 sighting and draws crowds to Main Street, so nearby campgrounds and hotels book out well in advance. Fall color typically peaks in mid to late October in the hill country.

State park sites in this region tend to be compact and tightly spaced. Jackson Lake's 34 electric sites offer 50-amp service and accommodate tents and RVs up to 35 feet, with fire rings, picnic tables, vault toilets, potable water, and a dump station; there are no shower houses. Lake Alma offers 6 full-hookup sites, 67 electric sites, and 10 non-electric sites, plus an ADA-accessible shower house, flush toilets, tables, fire rings, a dump station, and drinking water. Expect wooded, hilly terrain and limited cell coverage in the state forest and at more remote sites. Backpack campsites in Zaleski are primitive with a latrine and potable water year-round, though water caches may not be serviced in winter, so campers should carry their own. Source firewood locally; do not bring firewood in from out of state. Bring insect repellent from late spring through early fall.
