Buchtel camping overview
Buchtel is a small village in Athens and Hocking counties in southeastern Ohio, sitting at about 692 feet in the Appalachian foothills. The village lies within easy reach of the Hocking Hills region and Wayne National Forest, making it a practical base for RV travelers who want access to hardwood forests, sandstone gorges, and lake recreation without staying inside the busiest tourist corridors.
Campgrounds in the surrounding area range from full-service family resorts to quiet state-park loops. Burr Oak State Park, located in southeast Ohio, has a rustic country charm in its scenery of wooded hills and valley farms and offers a wide array of overnight accommodations with its lodge, cottages and campground. Nearby ATV-oriented sites appeal to riders using regional trail systems, while resort-style parks focus on family activities. RVers generally choose Buchtel for its central position between Athens, Nelsonville, Logan, and the Burr Oak reservoir, with short drives to trailheads, groceries, and fuel.
Things to do near Buchtel
The main draw is the Hocking Hills landscape, with hiking access to Old Man's Cave, Ash Cave, Cedar Falls, and Conkles Hollow within a short drive. Miles of forested ridges and hollows comprise these foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, and the woodlands support wildlife including white-tailed deer, ruffed grouse, box turtles, and wild turkey, while the lake's shore is inhabited by beaver and various waterfowl. Burr Oak Lake offers fishing, paddling, and shoreline trails, and the surrounding Wayne National Forest adds backcountry hiking and scenic drives. ATV riders use area trail networks, and the towns of Nelsonville, Logan, and Athens provide restaurants, breweries, and small museums for down-days between outdoor outings.

Peak color typically arrives in mid to late October and drives another surge in reservations. Winter is quieter, with cold temperatures and occasional snow. First off, let me start by saying Jared is considered by my family as a Super Host. I’ve never been camping before, and this was our first experience and he showed us everything that was need to be done with The RV. He took his time with us and he was very pleasant and he made us feel so comfortable. I really appreciate him and his wife & warm, welcome they gave us. Everything was wonderful. The weather kinda didn’t cooperate, but that is another story. We had a wonderful time the wife and I enjoying Camping life. We look forward to doing this again and if anybody ever thinks about renting a RV from this wonderful family, 5 stars + across the board we really had a wonderful time at Mohican State Park in Ohio Thank You so much for..

How to book campgrounds near Buchtel
State-park sites at Burr Oak are handled through the Ohio State Parks reservation system. Reservations are required for all camping areas and may be made up to six months in advance online or by calling (866) 644-6727. Popular summer weekends and October fall-color weekends tend to sell out first, so booking early in the window is advised. Showers, flush toilets and a dump station are available in the main campground at Burr Oak.
Private campgrounds in the area, including Hocking Hills Jellystone Park, Begleys ATV Campground, Burr Oak Family Resort, and Under The Stars Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or phone lines rather than a state portal. Cabins and premium RV sites at resort parks often book months ahead for summer and fall weekends, so contacting operators directly is the most reliable path.
What to expect camping near Buchtel
Expect wooded, hilly terrain typical of the Appalachian foothills. Sites at state-run loops can be uneven; walk-in access defines the camping experience at Burr Oak State Park Campground, where sites are positioned on sloped terrain overlooking Burr Oak Lake in southeastern Ohio's rolling hills, and the park offers both electric hookup sites and tent-only areas scattered across different elevations. Cell service remains spotty throughout the area, and the remote location means limited nearby supply options. Private resorts such as Hocking Hills Jellystone Park lean toward family amenities, with pools, lakes, and organized activities. RVers should stock up on groceries and propane in Athens, Logan, or Nelsonville before heading to more remote sites.
