Camping near Candlewood Lake, Ohio
Candlewood Lake is a private, gated recreational community in Morrow County, north-central Ohio, roughly midway between Columbus and Mansfield and just north of the village of Mount Gilead. A 250-acre stream-fed lake surrounded by wooded lots sits at the heart of the community, with about six miles of shoreline used for boating, water skiing, fishing, swimming and pontoon rides. The lake itself is member-access, so most visiting RV travelers base at nearby public and private campgrounds and use the region for day trips.
The closest state-run option is Mt. Gilead State Park, a 191-acre public recreation area just east of the village of Mount Gilead, set in a peaceful, wooded landscape with two small lakes. Private options within a short drive include Mt. Gilead KOA Holiday, River Bend Family Campground, Cardinal Center Campground in Marengo, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Columbus North on 76 wooded acres near Mount Gilead.
The area is gently rolling farm country with mixed hardwood forest, and Candlewood Lake itself sits at roughly 1,240 feet in elevation. Access is straightforward from I-71, which runs a few miles east of Mount Gilead.
Things to do around Candlewood Lake
Water recreation is the main draw at the nearby state park. The 13.5-acre Mt. Gilead Lake allows paddlecraft, sailboats and boats with electric motors only, and it offers fishing for bass, bluegill and other panfish; Ohio fishing regulations apply and a valid Ohio fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. Ice skating and ice fishing are also possible in winter.
On-land options run wide. Mt. Gilead State Park has an 18-hole disc golf course in day-use areas, plus hiking trails, a playground, volleyball and basketball courts, horseshoes and shuffleboard. Cardinal Center Campground adds a different flavor: the property hosts trap, skeet and sporting clay facilities alongside camping.
Families with younger kids often gravitate to Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Columbus North or Mt. Gilead KOA Holiday for pools, planned activities and playgrounds. Ohio's Amish country and Mohican State Park are within a 30 to 45 minute drive for day trips.

36° / 21°F 65 mmFreezing nights; state park stays open with reduced services
The camping season in this part of Ohio generally runs spring through fall, though several parks stay open year-round. Mt. Gilead State Park is one of those exceptions: it remains open in the cold months, though services are reduced. During the off-peak season, roughly November through early May, full hookup sites do not have water at the site and fees are reduced accordingly.
Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year. Local climate records show May as the highest-precipitation month, with rain on nearly two-thirds of days, so early-season campers should expect soft ground and pack rain gear. Summer is the busy season, with warm, humid days and comfortable evenings for tent and RV camping alike.
Fall is often the sweet spot: cooler nights, drier air and hardwood color through October. September is typically the driest month of the year. Private resort-style parks such as Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Columbus North and Mt. Gilead KOA Holiday run a summer-weighted calendar of family events, so weekends around holidays fill first. Winter campers at Mt. Gilead should plan for freezing overnight temperatures and possible snow.

How to book a campsite
Mt. Gilead State Park is reserved through Ohio's state system. All campsites may be reserved by visiting reserveohio.com or by calling 1-866-644-6727, and no walk-ins are offered. Reservations are available starting six months prior to the desired arrival date, and campsites can be booked as late as the day of arrival. The campground is compact, so summer weekends sell out early; setting a target date and booking at the six-month window is the safest approach. Weekend stays require a two-night minimum, and Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends require three nights.
Private parks use their own systems. Mt. Gilead KOA Holiday books through the KOA website or app, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Columbus North books through the Jellystone site. River Bend Family Campground and Cardinal Center Campground take reservations directly by phone or through their websites; Cardinal Center in particular fills around shooting-sports events, so calling ahead helps.
What to expect on site
Mt. Gilead State Park has a small, wooded footprint. It offers 59 campsites (22 full hookups and 37 with electric), 2 cabins and 6 primitive sites in a wooded setting next to a small lake, with drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers, a camp store, dump station, and a table, fire ring and grate at each site. Multiple campers note challenging site access and small spaces, particularly for larger RVs.
Cardinal Center is a very different footprint. It features 400 full or partial hookup campsites that are big-rig friendly, many accommodating slide-out RVs, with free WiFi and cable, pets allowed, a heated pool, cabins and a dump station on site.
Standard rules apply across Ohio state parks: campsites are permitted a maximum of two vehicles, boat trailers and campers count as vehicles, and one boat trailer per site is allowed. Visitors are not permitted in the campground between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., and registered campers are responsible for maintaining quiet hours during that window.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Candlewood Lake, OH
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Candlewood Lake, OH?
RV rental in Candlewood Lake is genuinely affordable compared to coastal destinations, with travel trailers often starting around $70 to $110 per night and Class C motorhomes typically running $150 to $220 per night. Larger Class A rigs sit in the $200 to $300 range, while campervans land in the middle. To save money, book midweek stays, target shoulder season (late April to mid-June and September), and filter for hosts offering generous mileage. Pro tip: bundling delivery to nearby Mohican State Park can actually cost less than driving the rig yourself if you're new to towing. Message a few hosts before booking to ask about weekly discounts.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/mohican-state-parkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Ohio?
Great news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Candlewood Lake. Ohio does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every RV on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy confirms your ID through the platform during booking, so there's no paperwork to chase down. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club. That's it, you're cleared to enjoy your Ohio RV trip.
bmv.ohio.gov/dl-id-fr-license.aspxWhat protection comes with my RVezy booking near Candlewood Lake?
Every RV rental in Candlewood Lake booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you pick up the keys. Protection plans cover physical damage to the RV, and you choose your coverage level (the available tiers are shown at checkout) so you can balance cost and comfort for your Ohio RV trip. This is especially reassuring on backroads near Mohican State Park, where deer crossings are common at dusk. Full coverage details and what is included with each plan are available on RVezy's insurance and protection page before you confirm your booking.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Candlewood Lake RV rental?
You can book with confidence because RVezy sets the cancellation policy (it is not chosen by individual hosts), and there is a money-back grace period right after booking so you are not locked in immediately. After that window, the refund amount depends on how far out from your trip you cancel, and special circumstances may apply for major weather events that Ohio sometimes sees in spring or winter. The cancellation policy that applies to your booking is shown on RVezy before you confirm payment. If your plans shift, contact RVezy support as early as possible, the sooner you reach out, the more flexibility you will typically have.

Pro tip: snap a photo of the roadside assistance number at pickup and save it on your phone so you can find it fast.

Candlewood Lake sits in a sweet spot for an Ohio RV trip. Popular routes include: Amish Country (Berlin and Walnut Creek, 50 miles east) for buggy rides and family-style dinners; Cedar Point and Lake Erie (Sandusky, 80 miles north) for coasters and lakeshore campgrounds; Hocking Hills State Park (110 miles south) for Old Man's Cave and waterfall hikes; and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park (115 miles northeast) for scenic train rides. Budgeting fuel for your Candlewood Lake RV trip is straightforward. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (mpg), Class A rigs 6 to 10 mpg, and campervans 14 to 20 mpg. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but expect a 20 to 30% drop from its normal mpg. Ohio gas prices generally run a bit below the national average. For a typical 300-mile loop through Mohican and Amish Country in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. For Ohio State Parks like Mohican, Mt. Gilead, and Malabar Farm, book through the official Ohio State Parks reservation system as early as possible. Sites can typically be reserved up to 6 months in advance, and the best riverside spots at Mohican often go within hours of opening for Memorial Day, July 4th, and fall foliage weekends. For private parks like the KOAs near Mt. Gilead and Butler, 2 to 3 months ahead is usually enough except on holidays. Weekday stays are often wide open even in summer. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder six months before your target date for your pick of premium sites.

Watch for the occasional Amish horse-and-buggy on county roads east toward Holmes County, and slow down at dusk in Mohican country where deer are common. Winter can bring lake-effect snow and ice from November through March. Pro tip: avoid the narrow, twisty stretch of OH-3 through the Mohican gorge in a large Class A; take OH-97 instead.

ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/mohican-state-forestHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card at booking, and no cash changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and is released after your trip once the host confirms the RV is returned in good condition. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walk-around with the host at pickup, photograph any existing dings, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump tanks if required. Pro tip: keep all pickup photos and receipts in case any charges come up later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV overnight near Candlewood Lake outside of campgrounds?
You have solid options for overnight RV parking near Candlewood Lake. Ohio State Parks like Mohican and Mt. Gilead offer designated overnight RV camping (reservation required, no roadside parking). Some Walmart and Cracker Barrel locations in Mansfield, Ashland, and Mount Vernon allow free overnight RV parking with manager approval, but policies vary by store, so always call ahead. Dispersed boondocking on Ohio Department of Natural Resources land is generally not permitted, and overnight parking is restricted at most rest areas along I-71. Pro tip: confirm the current policy by phone the day you arrive, and grab a meal at the host location as a thank-you for the free stay.
