Camping near Carey, Ohio
Carey sits in Wyandot County in northwest Ohio, about halfway between Findlay and Upper Sandusky along US-23. The village is best known as the home of the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation, a Roman Catholic basilica dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of Consolation, which draws pilgrims from across the Midwest and beyond. For RV travelers, the area combines flat, easy driving with quick access to farmland, small towns, and a handful of state and private campgrounds within a short drive.
Most campground options fall within roughly a 30-minute radius. Tee Pee Family Campground is the closest to Carey itself, located between Upper Sandusky and Findlay, less than 3.5 miles off US Route 23 and US Route 30 just 5 miles south of Carey. Walnut Grove RV Resort, Arrowhead Lake Campground, and Foxfire Campground round out the private options, while Van Buren State Park offers a public alternative to the northwest.
The terrain is flat and RV-friendly, and I-75 to the west provides an easy interstate connection for travelers coming from Toledo, Dayton, or Detroit.
Things to do around Carey
The Basilica and Shrine is the anchor attraction. The basilica never closes and is open 24/7, so visitors can stop in at any hour, and the grounds include gardens, devotional walks, and a gift shop. The annual novena runs from August 6 through August 14, with Mass offered each day at 11:00am in the Upper Basilica, and the associated pilgrimage brings large crowds that can affect local lodging.
For outdoor time, Van Buren State Park offers hiking, fishing, and bridle trails. A dedicated horseman's campground supports equestrians, and four bridle trails totaling approximately 12 miles wind through the forested landscape, while multi-use trails accommodate hiking and biking. Springville Marsh State Nature Preserve, just outside Carey, has a boardwalk trail through a rare inland fen. Findlay, about 20 miles northwest, adds restaurants, breweries, and family attractions for a rainy-day backup.

Peak camping season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when warm, humid weather supports swimming, fishing, and cookouts. Private parks in the area typically operate on a limited season: Tee Pee Family Campground operates from May through November with full hookups and basic amenities, and similar seasonal windows apply to most other private campgrounds in the region. Book weekends well in advance during summer, especially around the August novena at the Basilica.
Spring and fall are quieter and cooler, with fall foliage in October making a good shoulder-season target. Expect chilly overnights and the possibility of frost by late October.
Van Buren State Park provides a year-round option. The campground is open year-round with reservations available through ReserveOhio.com, and all 61 campsites now include full RV hookups with electric, water, and sewer service following a recent renovation. Winter camping is possible but expect cold, snow, and reduced services.
How to book a campsite
Van Buren State Park is reserved through Ohio's state park system. Reservations are available year-round through ReserveOhio.com or by calling (866) 644-6727. Reservations must be made one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to six months in advance, and summer weekends fill quickly, so plan ahead.
Private campgrounds near Carey generally take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Tee Pee Family Campground uses an online booking system on its official site, and Walnut Grove RV Resort, Arrowhead Lake Campground, and Foxfire Campground take reservations through their own portals. Call ahead if a specific site type is needed, such as a pull-through, 50-amp, or waterfront pad.
For holiday weekends and the August novena, reserve as early as possible. Weekday arrivals are usually easier for last-minute trips.
What to expect on arrival
Expect small-town Ohio: quiet roads, farmland, and easy navigation for larger rigs. Cell service is generally reliable near Carey and along US-23. Grocery stores, fuel, and propane are available in Carey, Upper Sandusky, and Findlay.
Amenities vary by campground. Van Buren offers basic amenities including picnic tables at each site, pit toilets, a dump station, and drinking water, along with an amphitheater and playground, and while the facility lacks showers and flush toilets, the full hookup sites make it an excellent choice for self-contained RVs. Tee Pee has over 200 RV campsites, updated restrooms with flush toilets and showers, and pets are permitted at designated sites. Private parks in the area typically add showers, laundry, camp stores, swimming ponds, and planned family activities.
Mosquitoes and other insects are common in summer, so pack repellent. Firewood is usually available on-site; check local rules before bringing wood from home.

How much does an RV rental in Carey, OH typically cost?
Good news: an RV rental in Carey, OH is one of the more affordable ways to explore north-central Ohio. Travel trailers near Wyandot County typically run about $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes average $175 to $260, and larger Class A coaches start around $250. Pilgrimage weekends at the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation can push prices up, so booking 6 to 8 weeks ahead locks in lower rates. To find a cheap RV rental Carey travelers love, filter by travel trailers with delivery included and aim for Sunday through Thursday nights. Pro tip: midweek stays at Tee Pee Family Campground just up the road in Upper Sandusky can save you 20% versus weekends.
wyandotcounty.com/visitors/What kind of license do I need to rent an RV in Carey, Ohio?
Great news for first-time renters: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Carey, Ohio. Ohio does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal RVs, motorhomes, or travel trailers driven recreationally, regardless of size. To book on RVezy you generally need to be at least 25 years old and verify your ID through the platform during checkout, which only takes a few minutes. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto club before you fly in. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward the whole process is.

Yes, and this is one of the best reasons to book an RV rental in Carey, OH through RVezy. Every booking includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road without stressing about a stray branch on a rural Wyandot County backroad. You choose your level of coverage during checkout (not the host), so you control how much peace of mind you want. The plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, with limits and deductibles that vary by tier. Pro tip: if you are planning a longer Ohio RV trip with highway miles toward Cedar Point or Hocking Hills, upgrading to a higher tier is a smart, inexpensive move.

You can book your RV rental in Carey with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (hosts do not), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you have time to confirm everything fits your plans. After that grace period, your refund depends on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your trip plans stay protected. Because Carey sits inland in flat farm country, weather-related cancellations are rare outside of winter. Pro tip: message the host with your dates before booking to confirm availability, then book early so you have the widest window of flexibility.

Dogs are welcome on leash at nearby Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area for hiking, and the Heritage Trail in Upper Sandusky is a great paved walk for older pups. Tee Pee Family Campground and Walnut Grove Campground both allow leashed pets at most sites. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees (usually $25 to $75 per stay) and breed details.

Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile round-trip, often with a flat setup fee around $75 to $150. You have great options within a short drive for RV camping near Carey. Tee Pee RV Park in Upper Sandusky (about 12 miles north) offers full hookups and family-friendly amenities. Walnut Grove Campground in Tiffin (about 25 miles northeast) sits along the Sandusky River with pull-through sites for big rigs. Van Buren State Park (about 35 miles northwest) is a quiet public option with electric sites and a dump station. For more amenities and longer stays, Indian Mill Campground and Sunset Cove RV Resort give you a wider mix. Pro tip: book private parks 4 to 6 weeks ahead for summer weekends, and even earlier during pilgrimage season at the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in late summer.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/state-park/van-buren-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Carey, OH?
Late spring through mid-October is the sweet spot for a Carey, OH RV trip. May through June brings highs in the 70s and blooming countryside, July and August are warm (mid-80s) and ideal for Lake Erie day trips, and September and early October deliver crisp 60s and brilliant fall foliage across Wyandot County's farmland and woodlots. Winters in Carey can dip into the teens and 20s with lake-effect snow possible, so most private campgrounds close from late October through April. Ohio State Park campgrounds like Van Buren stay open year-round if you want a quieter cold-weather adventure. Pro tip: book the third weekend of August around the Assumption pilgrimage at the Basilica well in advance, as Carey gets busy.
weather.gov/cle/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Carey?
You're going to do great. Carey sits in flat, open farm country with wide rural roads and very light traffic, which makes it one of the friendliest places in Ohio to learn the ropes. Your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, water, slide-outs, dump procedures, and driving tips, and you can call or text them throughout your trip. US-23 runs right through town as a straightforward divided highway, and SR-15 and SR-199 are easy two-lanes. Avoid downtown Findlay during rush hour and you're golden. Pro tip: take 20 minutes after pickup to practice turns and backing in an empty lot like the Wyandot County Fairgrounds before you head out.
transportation.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odot/programs/highway-safetyWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You are never on your own during your RV trip from Carey. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire, dead battery, or lockout is one phone call away from help. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, and most local owners respond quickly with troubleshooting tips. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip if anything more complex comes up. Carey's location along US-23 means tow services and RV-friendly mechanics in Findlay (about 30 minutes) and Tiffin (about 25 minutes) can reach you fast. Pro tip: snap photos of every connection at pickup so you have reference shots if something needs reattaching later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Carey, OH RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is easy and welcomed by most hosts on your RV rental in Carey. From Carey you can comfortably reach Michigan (about 1.5 hours north), Indiana (about 1.5 hours west), Pennsylvania (about 3.5 hours east), and Kentucky (about 3 hours south) with no special paperwork. Canadian trips through the Detroit-Windsor or Buffalo-Niagara crossings are allowed by many hosts but require advance approval, so message them before booking to confirm and review insurance coverage. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: a popular long weekend loop from Carey is up to Mackinac Island, Michigan (about 5 hours) for ferry-and-fudge memories.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I plan for?
Plan on realistic numbers and you'll be happily on budget. Class C motorhomes around Carey average 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG combined). Ohio gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and Carey has stations right on US-23 plus larger truck-friendly fuel stops in Findlay and Upper Sandusky. For a 4-night trip with 400 miles of driving, budget around $150 to $250 for fuel in a Class C. Pro tip: GasBuddy shows the cheapest diesel in Hancock and Wyandot counties, often at Pilot in Findlay just off I-75.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Carey?
For peace of mind, reserve Ohio State Park campgrounds like Van Buren (about 35 miles northwest) as soon as the reservation window opens through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources reservation system. Private parks near Carey such as Tee Pee RV Park and Walnut Grove Campground typically take reservations directly by phone or website, and 4 to 6 weeks ahead is plenty for most summer weekends. The big exception is the Assumption pilgrimage weekend in mid-August at the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation, when local sites fill months in advance. Pro tip: Sunday or Monday arrivals give you first pick of the best shaded or waterfront sites.
reservations.ohiodnr.gov/What are local driving conditions like around Carey?
Driving in and around Carey is refreshingly easy. The terrain is flat to gently rolling farmland, with low traffic and wide rural highways like US-23, SR-15, SR-103, and SR-199 that handle big RVs comfortably. Watch for slow-moving farm equipment in spring and fall (those orange triangles mean drop to 25 MPH), and be aware of occasional Amish horse-and-buggy traffic on backroads east toward Bucyrus. Winter can bring snow squalls and lake-effect from late November through March, so most renters stick to April through October. Downtown Carey itself has a low railroad underpass on Findlay Street; stick to US-23 if you're driving anything taller than 11 feet. Pro tip: the ODOT OHGO app gives real-time road conditions across the state.
ohgo.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Carey?
You'll find a comfortable mix. Most private campgrounds near Carey offer 30 and 50 amp electric, water hookups, sewer or dump stations, hot showers, and laundry. Walnut Grove Campground has a heated pool, dog park, and pavilion; Tee Pee Family Campground has a pond with an inflatable slide. State parks like Van Buren and Mary Jane Thurston offer electric sites, dump stations, and potable water fills but not always full hookups at every site. The closest free dump station to Carey is at the Marathon truck stop area near Findlay on US-23. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before leaving the host's driveway, since some smaller rural sites only offer a central spigot rather than at-site water.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/state-parksWhat's inside the RVs available to rent in Carey?
You'll be impressed by how home-like these rigs are. Most RV rentals in Carey come fully equipped with queen or king beds, bunk options for kids, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control, and dinettes that convert to extra sleeping space. Many include a TV with DVD or streaming, an outdoor awning, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Class C motorhomes and travel trailers typically sleep 4 to 8, while a campervan rental Carey travelers love is great for couples wanting easier driving. Generators, solar, and WiFi hotspots are common add-ons. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count on RVezy to match your group size before browsing further.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Carey make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons include camping chairs and tables ($20 to $40), bedding and linen kits ($30 to $75), kitchen kits with dishes and pots ($25 to $50), generators (often $20 to $40 per day if not built-in), bike racks, and outdoor grills. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Carey, and many offer drop-off at a nearby campground or even Toledo Express or Mansfield Lahm airports for a delivery fee. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night with overage at about $0.35 to $0.45 per mile. Pro tip: bundling delivery, setup, and a linen kit often costs less than booking them separately, so ask the host for a bundled quote.
transportation.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odot/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your RV rental in Carey is simple and fully handled through RVezy, so you never exchange cash or cards with the host. You pay your rental total at booking with a credit or debit card, and a refundable security deposit is placed as a hold separate from your booking payment a few days before pickup. As long as the RV is returned in the same condition with tanks and fuel as agreed, the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: walk through the RV with your host's checklist at pickup and drop-off and take a quick video of the exterior, interior, and odometer: it is the single best way to keep your deposit smooth and stress-free.
