Camping near Clayton, Ohio
Clayton sits in northwest Montgomery County, about fifteen minutes from downtown Dayton and directly off I-70. The area works well as a base for RV travelers exploring the Miami Valley, with easy access to Dayton attractions, farm country to the west, and the Great Miami River corridor to the east.
Campground options within a short drive lean toward private RV parks with full hookups. Dayton KOA Holiday is located in Brookville, Ohio, roughly ten miles from Clayton, and serves as the main full-service park in the immediate area. Nearby options include Oak & Ember Farms, Rye Camp, The Graystone Ranch, and Green Valley RV Park, offering a mix of farm-stay, glamping, and traditional RV setups.
The surrounding region is humid continental, so most private campgrounds run a full spring-through-fall season, with a shorter shoulder window in November and March. Sites near Clayton fill quickly for summer weekends and around events at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.
Things to do near Clayton
The National Museum of the United States Air Force is the largest aviation museum in the world and sits about twenty minutes from Clayton. Admission is free and the exhibit hangars can easily fill a full day, especially for families with school-age kids.
Outdoor options are strong. The Miami Valley bike trail network offers more than 350 miles of paved, interconnected trails and is billed as the largest paved trail network in the country. The Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm has a nature sanctuary just north of Dayton and is a good pick for younger children thanks to its working farm animals and short loop trails.
Closer to camp, Dayton KOA Holiday runs on-site amenities including a pool, fishing pond, and planned kids' activities on weekends. The Oregon District in downtown Dayton adds walkable shops and restaurants for evenings off the campground.

The practical RV season around Clayton runs from mid-April through late October, which lines up with the Dayton KOA Holiday operating window and the most comfortable temperatures.
Summer is peak. Days are warm and humid, and family campgrounds fill weeks in advance for holiday weekends and the CenterPoint Energy Dayton Air Show, held each June at Dayton International Airport. The wettest months typically fall in late spring and early summer, so early-spring campers should plan for muddy sites and pack rain gear.
Fall is the quieter shoulder. September brings clearer skies and lower humidity, and October delivers reliable color along the Great Miami and Stillwater river corridors. Snow in Dayton usually begins around December and ends by March, and most private RV parks in the area either close or shift to limited winter operations during that window.

How to book
For private parks near Clayton, book directly through the campground's website or through the platform you are renting the RV from. Dayton KOA Holiday takes reservations through the KOA system and tends to sell out summer Fridays and Saturdays well in advance. Oak & Ember Farms, Rye Camp, The Graystone Ranch, and Green Valley RV Park each handle their own inventory, so confirm hookup type, rig length limits, and check-in windows before arrival.
If you plan to combine a Clayton stay with an Ohio state park, note that campsite reservations can be made up to six months in advance through reserveohio.com or by calling the reservation line. Reservations are required at most Ohio state park campgrounds, with Jesse Owens being the notable first-come, first-served exception.
What to expect
Terrain around Clayton is gently rolling farmland and suburban development, so most campgrounds sit on flat, easy-to-level pads. Sites at Dayton KOA Holiday and nearby parks are generally pull-through or back-in with full hookups, and rig-length limits are rarely an issue for standard rental Class C and travel-trailer sizes.
Cell coverage is reliable across the major carriers in the Clayton and Brookville area. Grocery runs are easy: full-size supermarkets and hardware stores are within a ten-minute drive, and propane is available at multiple retail locations along Salem Avenue and near I-70.
Expect summer thunderstorms to roll through quickly, often in the late afternoon. Awning-down discipline matters here, and campers should keep an eye on NOAA radio or a weather app during unstable stretches from May through August.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clayton%2C%20OhioDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Clayton, Ohio?
Good news: a regular Ohio driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Clayton, even for a large Class A motorhome. Ohio does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for recreational vehicles used for personal travel, regardless of size. To book on RVezy you generally need to be at least 25 years old, and ID verification is handled inside the platform during checkout, so there is no paperwork to chase down. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home country license. First time renting an RV? Your host will walk you through every system at pickup so you roll out feeling confident.

You can book your Clayton RV trip with confidence because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking. The policy is designed to give renters flexibility based on how far out your trip is. Ohio's spring thunderstorm season can shake things up, so it is reassuring to know you are not locked in without options. Pro tip: review the current cancellation terms during checkout, and reach out to RVezy support if something major comes up. They are available before, during, and after your trip.

Absolutely — pet-friendly RV rental Clayton options are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching and you'll see hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots (some may charge a small pet fee or cleaning deposit, which is listed right on the booking page). Once you've got your rig, Clayton is a dream for dog owners: Sycamore State Park just minutes south allows leashed pets on its bridle and hiking trails, and Englewood MetroPark has miles of paw-friendly paths along the Stillwater River. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl and a tie-out stake. Most campgrounds in the Dayton area require pets to be leashed and never left unattended outside the RV.

Delivery fees are set by the host and usually scale with distance. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your campsite name and site number so they can give you an exact quote and ETA.

Clayton's grid-style streets and nearby I-70/I-75 access make it one of the more beginner-friendly launch points in Ohio. Pro tip: book a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer for your first trip, and pick a campground within an hour (like Sycamore State Park) so you can ease into things without a long highway haul.

Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate so you have everything ready if you ever need to call.

Head 2.5 hours east to Hocking Hills State Park for waterfalls and cliff hikes (~140 miles), 2 hours northeast to Cuyahoga Valley National Park (~210 miles), 1 hour south to Cincinnati and the Ohio River, or 4 hours southeast to Red River Gorge in Kentucky for sandstone arches. Want a longer haul? The Great Smoky Mountains are about 6 hours south.
