Campgrounds near Covington, Ohio
Covington sits in Miami County in western Ohio, roughly 25 miles north of Dayton and within easy reach of several RV-friendly campgrounds. The surrounding landscape is flat to gently rolling farmland cut by the Stillwater River, with small-town amenities close by and interstate access via I-75 to the east.
RV renters typically choose between state park camping at Lake Loramie State Park, a reservoir originally built as a feeder lake for the Miami-Erie Canal, which offers full-hookup, electric-only, and non-electric sites, and private options such as Dayton KOA Holiday, Rossburg Acres Campground, and The Graystone Ranch. Poor Farmers RV Sales and Services provides additional support for renters needing parts, service, or a base of operations.
The area works well for shorter regional trips: parks are close together, roads are flat and easy to tow on, and towns like Piqua, Troy, and Sidney provide grocery, laundry, and fuel stops within a short drive of most sites.
Things to do near Covington
Lake Loramie is the main outdoor draw within an hour of Covington. Six launch ramps provide access to the lake, and dozens of docks and tie-ups are available for lease, plus an adaptive boat launch that accommodates paddle craft and pontoon boats. The lake produces crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, bullheads, carp, and largemouth bass, with fishing piers in the park and ADA-accessible piers at Oak Grove and Daniels.
On land, over 8 miles of hiking trails wind through the park, with portions following the historic canal towpath as part of both the Buckeye Trail and the North Country Trail. The park also features an 18-hole disc golf course.
Closer to Dayton, families use the KOA as a base for the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, and the paved Great Miami River Recreation Trail.

Summer is peak season. Warm days, long evenings, and swim-friendly water bring the highest demand at both state park and private campgrounds, so weekend sites at Lake Loramie State Park fill weeks ahead. Summer visitors enjoy the swimming beach, boating, and fishing on the lake. Renters should note that blue-green algae has been documented in the lake during warmer months, with posted warnings advising against contact, which is worth checking before arrival.
Spring and fall are quieter and cooler, with fall foliage peaking in October across western Ohio. Thunderstorms are common in spring, and this is in the area where tornadoes can form, more likely in spring but sometimes also in autumn, so keep an eye on weather radios.
Winter camping is possible at Lake Loramie, which offers ice fishing, sledding, and snowmobiling when conditions permit, though most private parks in the area close or reduce services.

How to book campgrounds near Covington
Lake Loramie State Park uses the Ohio state reservation system. All campsites may be reserved by visiting reserveohio.com or by calling 1-866-644-6727, and no walk-ins are offered. Check-in is 3 PM for campsites and 4 PM for cabins. Book summer weekends and holiday windows as early as possible, since electric and full-hookup sites go fastest.
Private parks including Dayton KOA Holiday, Rossburg Acres Campground, and The Graystone Ranch take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For last-minute trips, weekday arrivals typically offer better availability than Friday or Saturday nights.
RV renters heading to Lake Loramie should note road access: some approaches involve narrow routes with frequent stop signs, so larger rigs should account for that in route planning.
What to expect on-site
Site types vary. The Lake Loramie campground offers full-hookup sites with water, sewer, and electric, electric-only sites, non-electric tent sites, and ADA-compliant cedar cabins for those seeking a roofed option. Some sites are located close to the water's edge for easy fishing access, and while some are wooded and shaded, others are more open with less privacy.
Amenities are practical rather than resort-style. The on-site camp store is open to the public and offers bike rentals along with loans of games, fishing equipment, and sporting gear. Private parks in the area typically add pools, playgrounds, and organized weekend activities.
Rules are standard for the region: visitors are not permitted in the campground between 10 PM and 7 AM, and registered campers are responsible for maintaining quiet hours during those same times. Pets are welcome at most parks with proof of vaccination and leash requirements.
