Campgrounds and RV parks near Crooksville, OH

Off-road riding is the headline draw. Perry State Forest offers about 16 miles of rugged ATV trails, 8 miles of horseback trails, and 24 miles of hiking trails, with hard-pack to rocky terrain and elevation changes. Perry Backwoods sits adjacent to the forest with wooded paths leading directly to the riding trails, so riders can leave from the campground on their APV. Families stopping at National Road Campground find playground space, a splash pad, and stocked ponds for fishing. Burr Oak State Park adds a lake for boating and fishing, plus a backpack trail through forested ridges. Zanesville, a short drive north, offers The Wilds safari park, the Y-Bridge, and pottery heritage sites tied to Crooksville's clay-industry history.

The camping season in southeast Ohio runs primarily from mid-spring through October, with shoulder months bringing cooler nights and fewer crowds. State-forest ATV riding follows a defined window: per Ohio Administrative Code, the Perry State Forest APV area is closed annually beginning the second Monday morning in December and reopens the first Friday morning in April. Plan ATV trips inside that window, and note that side-by-sides and motorcycles must meet the 62-inch width limit. Summer brings warm, humid days and the peak of family travel. Weekends at Burr Oak and the private parks near the I-70 corridor fill quickly, especially around holiday weekends. Fall is the visual high point, with ridges turning to deep reds and yellows in October, and weekend sites at Burr Oak book out well in advance. Winter camping is limited. Most private parks reduce services or close, though a few stay open year-round. Burr Oak State Park itself stays open year-round for tents and RVs, with 17 electric sites and the remainder primitive.

Expect wooded, hilly terrain and a mix of full-hookup RV parks and rustic state-park camping. Sites near the Zanesville corridor, including National Road Campground and Wolfies Campground, are easy to reach with a larger rig and offer family amenities like playgrounds and stocked ponds. Burr Oak State Park has 123 campsites with 17 electric and the rest primitive, plus showers, modern restrooms with flush toilets, water spigots, and an RV dump site at the end of the camp road, so RVers there should arrive with tanks topped up and prepared to dry-camp on most sites. ATV-focused parks lean rustic, with a mix of hookup and primitive sites and shared bathhouses. Cell service is spotty in the forest hollows. Bring leveling blocks for hill country and insect protection in summer.
