Campgrounds near Danville, Ohio
Danville sits in Knox County in east-central Ohio, on the western edge of the Mohican River watershed and within easy driving distance of Mohican State Park and Mohican-Memorial State Forest. The area is defined by the Kokosing River, a designated state scenic river, and by the wooded ridges that surround the town. RV travelers use Danville as a base for river paddling, cycling the Kokosing Gap Trail, and day trips into Holmes County Amish Country.
Private riverfront campgrounds cluster along the Kokosing and Mohican Rivers. Closest to town are Kokosing Valley Camp and Canoe, Walhonding Hills Campgrounds, and Rainbow Springs Family Cmpground. A short drive east and southeast brings RVers to Mohican Wilderness and Mohican Reservation Campgrounds and Canoeing, both set along the Mohican River near Loudonville.
Most private parks in the area combine RV sites with on-site canoe, kayak, and tube rentals, making them convenient for families who want water access without towing extra gear.
Things to do near Danville
Paddling is the headline activity. Kokosing Valley Camp and Canoe runs trips on the Kokosing River, while Mohican Reservation Campgrounds and Canoeing and Mohican Wilderness operate liveries on the Mohican. Tubing, kayaking, and canoe floats run from spring through early fall.
Cyclists ride the Kokosing Gap Trail, a paved 14-mile rail-trail connecting Mount Vernon, Gambier, Howard, and Danville along the river. Mohican State Park adds hiking through the Clear Fork Gorge, an extensive mountain biking trail system, a covered bridge, and a historic grist mill.
Families also use Danville as a launch point into Holmes County Amish Country for cheese shops, furniture stores, and country drives through Berlin and Millersburg.

The main camping season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when private campgrounds are fully staffed, canoe liveries run daily trips, and Mohican State Park's pool and naturalist programs are open. Summer weekends book out weeks in advance at both state and private campgrounds, and Mohican State Park requires a two-night minimum on weekend reservations.
Spring and fall are quieter. Water levels on the Kokosing and Mohican are typically highest in spring, and fall color peaks in mid to late October across the Mohican hills. Many private campgrounds operate on a seasonal calendar and close by late October or early November.
Winter access is limited. Mohican State Park keeps a portion of its campground open year-round, but seasonal water service at individual sites shuts off during freezing months and some loops and facilities close. Campers should confirm winter amenities directly with the park before booking.
How to book campgrounds near Danville
Public sites are booked through ReserveOhio, the state's reservation system. Mohican State Park campsites can be reserved up to six months in advance, and cabins up to one year ahead. Walk-ins are not accepted, and weekend stays require a two-night minimum.
Park-and-Pack backcountry sites in Mohican-Memorial State Forest use a separate ODNR Division of Forestry reservation system. Sites are bookable up to 90 days in advance, users are limited to 14 nights within any 30-day window, and a printed or digital permit must be carried on site.
Private campgrounds such as Kokosing Valley Camp and Canoe, Walhonding Hills Campgrounds, Rainbow Springs Family Cmpground, Mohican Wilderness, and Mohican Reservation Campgrounds and Canoeing book directly by phone or through their own websites. Summer holiday weekends should be reserved months ahead.
What to expect on site
Expect wooded, rolling terrain and narrow county roads on the approach. Larger rigs should confirm site length and turn radius before booking, especially at riverfront private parks where sites can be tight and shaded by mature trees.
Hookups vary. Mohican State Park's main campground includes full hook-up, electric, and non-electric loops, with a dump station, modern shower houses, and a seasonal pool. Private Mohican and Kokosing river parks generally offer electric sites, hot showers, camp stores, and on-site paddling rentals.
Cell reception is spotty in the river valleys, and many parks provide Wi-Fi near the office. Firewood is sold on site at most locations, and Ohio guidance discourages moving firewood across regions to limit pest spread.
