Campgrounds and RV parks near Darrtown, OH

Acton Lake at Hueston Woods anchors most trips on the Ohio side, with boating, swimming, and fishing on the water and hiking through a 200-acre old-growth forest designated a National Natural Landmark. Fossil hunting in the exposed Ordovician limestone beds along Big Four Hollow is a common family activity, and an 18-hole championship golf course, marina, and 1,500-foot swim beach round out the park amenities. Across the state line, the Brookville Lake complex draws anglers for bass, bluegill, and its walleye program, plus flat-water boating on the 5,260-acre reservoir. Whitewater Memorial State Park adds a swim beach on 200-acre Whitewater Lake, five hiking trails, and 9 miles of bridle trails accessible from the horsemen's campground, along with a saddle barn concessionaire offering guided rides and hayrides in season.

The Ohio-Indiana border region has a humid continental climate with cold winters, warm summers, and precipitation spread through the year. Late spring through early fall is the peak camping window, and weekends fill quickly during this period, particularly at the more amenity-rich loops. June tends to be the wettest month in the surrounding area, so RV renters should plan for storms and possible short-notice site changes. Summer at Hueston Woods and Brookville Lake brings the fullest slate of activities: swimming is typically allowed from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and the 3D archery range at Quakertown State Recreation Area is open Thursday through Sunday from April through August. Trails, fishing, and boating stay productive well into October. Winter camping is possible at Hueston Woods, which operates year-round, and the Indiana complex is also listed as open year round, though most seasonal services and the Quakertown beach are unavailable outside the warm season. January and February are the coldest months, with average highs only a few degrees above freezing and snowfall from December into March.

Hueston Woods has a modern, year-round campground with more than 200 electric sites, about 20 full-hookup pull-throughs suited to larger rigs, and additional non-electric loops with vault restrooms. Amenities include flush restrooms and showers in the developed A and B loops, a dump station, a camp store at check-in, laundry, WiFi, and playgrounds. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., there is a two-vehicle limit per site, and stays are capped at 14 nights. At Quakertown State Recreation Area, sites offer 20, 30, and 50 amp electric service with some full-hookup options, modern shower buildings, and a dump station, though the on-site beach is permanently closed. Whitewater Memorial's horsemen's camp is more primitive, with direct trail access and horse stalls. Sites throughout the region are wooded, and raccoons are active after dark, so food should be stored securely.
