RV camping near Dillonvale, Ohio
Dillonvale sits in Jefferson County in eastern Ohio, a short drive from the Ohio River and the West Virginia line. The surrounding sandstone hills are part of the Appalachian Highlands, and campgrounds in the area range from small rural RV parks to a rustic Ohio state park and a hilltop park across the river in West Virginia.
Close-in private options include Big Gs RV Campground and Ernies Acres Campground, both practical bases for travelers exploring the Upper Ohio Valley. Main - Jefferson Lake State Park is set up for both family and equestrian camping, with tents and trailers accommodated and pets welcome on all sites. Across the river in Moundsville, West Virginia, Grand Vue Park is a resort-style campground with long-range views of the Ohio Valley and full hookup sites that include 30 and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer, suitable for big rigs.
For travelers routing east on I-70, Hotel RV West Alexander offers a stop just over the Pennsylvania line, useful for one-night stays between destinations.
Things to do near Dillonvale
Main - Jefferson Lake State Park has multi-use trails suited for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders, with about 18 miles of trails winding through the park. The 17-acre lake is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, channel catfish, and trout, and non-motorized boats and boats with electric motors up to four horsepower are permitted. The campground area also has a playground, volleyball court, and basketball court.
At Grand Vue Park, on-park recreation is a major draw. Ziplines and an aerial adventure course overlook the Ohio Valley, and the property also includes trails, a disc golf course, miniature golf, a pool, and cabins.
Day trips include Wheeling, the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex, and the historic West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville.

The Upper Ohio Valley has four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and humid, and this is the peak camping window: hookup sites at popular parks fill weeks ahead for holiday weekends. Spring brings green hills, rising water in the creeks, and some of the wettest months of the year, along with muddy trails after storms.
Fall is often the best time to visit for RV travelers who want cooler nights and quieter campgrounds. Foliage in the oak and hickory forests of Jefferson County typically peaks in mid to late October. Winters are cold and can bring snow and icy roads, and access to primitive facilities is limited.
Winter operations vary by property. At Grand Vue Park, from December 1 to April 1 only one bathhouse is available and a limited number of sites are open for rental. Ohio state park campgrounds in this region typically operate on a seasonal schedule with reduced services once temperatures drop, so travelers should confirm hours and amenities directly with each campground before arriving.
How to book campgrounds near Dillonvale
Reservations for Main - Jefferson Lake State Park can be made up to six months in advance online or by calling the Ohio state parks reservation line at (866) 644-6727. Ohio does not charge entrance fees to state parks and does not offer an annual pass. Because the park has only 5 electric sites plus 44 non-electric sites, hookup seekers should book as early as possible for summer weekends.
Grand Vue Park takes reservations through its own online booking system, and cabins and full hookup RV sites for holiday and event weekends tend to sell out first. For smaller private parks such as Big Gs RV Campground, Ernies Acres Campground, and Hotel RV West Alexander, call ahead to confirm availability, rig-length limits, and any deposit requirements.
What to expect on arrival
Expect rural roads with grades and switchbacks as you approach the Jefferson Lake area. The state park campground is a multi-use area with equestrian and tent/RV sites, only five of which have electric hookups; facilities include vault toilets, water fountains and non-threaded spigots, picnic tables, fire pits with cooking grates, and a dump station for RVs. Some sites are noticeably sloped, so site selection matters.
Grand Vue Park feels more like a resort, with a gated entrance and a paved main road running through the RV area. There are 40 full hookup sites with 30 and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer. Back-in sites accommodate RVs up to 50 feet, with Site 23 at 38 feet, and each site includes a 12-foot space for a towed vehicle plus a firepit and picnic area.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Dillonvale, OH
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Dillonvale, OH?
Good news for budget travelers: RV rental in Dillonvale typically runs less than what you'd pay in big Ohio metros like Columbus or Cleveland. On RVezy, expect roughly $90 to $175 per night for travel trailers, $125 to $225 for Class C motorhomes, and $200 to $325 for larger Class A coaches, with prices set by individual hosts. Mid-week pickups, trips outside summer holiday weekends, and 7-plus night bookings often unlock the best weekly discounts. For a cheap RV rental Dillonvale getaway, filter by travel trailers and look for hosts offering free local delivery to nearby campgrounds like Jefferson Lake State Park to skip the towing question entirely. Pro tip: shoulder season (late April or September) gives you cool weather and the lowest rates of the year.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/jefferson-lake-state-parkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Dillonvale, Ohio?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Dillonvale, no Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement required. Ohio follows the federal CDL exemption for personal-use recreational vehicles, so even a 32-foot Class C motorhome or a fifth wheel travel trailer drives on your everyday license. To book on RVezy, you simply need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and ID verification happens digitally through the platform before your trip. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association. Most first-time renters in Jefferson County are surprised how quick the whole approval step is.
bmv.ohio.gov/dl-cdl-exemptions.aspxWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Dillonvale?
Every RV rental in Dillonvale booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you pull out of the host's driveway. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you real peace of mind without arranging separate coverage. During checkout you choose your protection level (RVezy offers tiered plans, not the host), letting you pick the balance of deductible and coverage that fits your trip. It's purpose-built for peer-to-peer RV rental and covers the situations that worry first-timers most, like a parking lot scrape or a windshield chip on I-70.

RVezy (not the individual host) sets a consistent cancellation policy for every reservation, so you can book your Dillonvale RV trip with confidence. There's a money-back grace period right after you book, plus tiered refund options depending on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. Because the policy is handled at the platform level, you won't see different rules on different listings. If your plans change, open your booking in the RVezy app or contact RVezy support and they'll walk you through your specific options before you commit to anything. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your trip plans stay protected.

Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see every motorhome and travel trailer in the area where dogs (and sometimes cats) are welcome. Dillonvale is surrounded by dog-loving outdoor spots: Jefferson Lake State Park about 15 minutes north allows leashed pets on trails and at the campground, and Fernwood State Forest's Hidden Hollow Campground welcomes leashed dogs in a quiet, wooded setting. Message the host beforehand about your specific pet (breed, size, shedding) so check-in is smooth, and ask about any pet cleaning fee upfront so there are no surprises at return.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/jefferson-lake-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Dillonvale?
Yes, RV delivery Dillonvale is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if you've never towed before. Many local hosts will drive the RV directly to your campsite at Jefferson Lake State Park, Piedmont Lake, or even a private property in Jefferson County, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. You just show up with groceries and start your trip. Look for the Delivery filter on the listings page, then message the host to confirm the delivery fee (usually based on round-trip mileage). For a stress-free first time renting an RV, delivery is the smartest move you can make.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/jefferson-lake-state-parkHow far can I travel from Dillonvale on an RV trip?

A classic RV road trip from Dillonvale loops through Amish Country (Berlin and Sugarcreek, around 90 miles west) before heading home. Always confirm the included miles on the listing and ask the host for an overage rate upfront.
nps.gov/cuva/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Dillonvale, Ohio?
You've got excellent options within a 30-minute drive of Dillonvale for RV camping. Jefferson Lake State Park (about 12 miles north near Richmond) offers shaded sites, a swimming beach, and electric hookups in a peaceful setting. Hidden Hollow Campground inside Fernwood State Forest near Bloomingdale has 22 free, first-come-first-served sites with paved pads, fire rings, and pit toilets, ideal for self-contained rigs. Piedmont Lake Park (about 35 miles west) is a fishing paradise with full-hookup sites along a 2,270-acre lake. Across the river, Wheeling KOA Holiday in Triadelphia, WV has full hookups, a pool, and a hot tub. Pro tip for Jefferson Lake and Piedmont, book through the Ohio State Parks reservation system at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead for summer weekends.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/fernwood-state-forestWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Dillonvale?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for a Dillonvale RV trip, with the absolute sweet spot being May, June, September, and early October. Summer highs sit comfortably in the low-to-mid 80s°F, while spring and fall deliver 60s and 70s°F with crisp nights perfect for a campfire. October brings spectacular fall foliage across the Appalachian foothills of Jefferson County, and the crowds at Jefferson Lake and Fernwood State Forest thin out dramatically. Winters get cold (lows in the 20s°F with regular snow), so if you're booking December through March, look for a four-season RV with heated holding tanks and confirm shore power is available at your campground. Local insider tip: the third weekend of October is peak color along Route 7 along the Ohio River.
weather.gov/pbz/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay in Dillonvale?
You'll be just fine, and Dillonvale is actually a forgiving place to learn. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, the propane system, and the dump procedure, so you're never left guessing. The roads around Dillonvale are mostly two-lane country highways like OH-150 and US-22 with light traffic and modest grades, much easier than navigating downtown Pittsburgh or Cleveland. If you want to skip driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and setup at a campground like Jefferson Lake State Park. First time renting an RV pro tip: pick up your rig mid-morning on a weekday so you've got daylight and quiet roads for your first 50 miles.
transportation.ohio.gov/programs/highway-safetyWhat happens if something breaks down during my Dillonvale RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan. One phone call gets help dispatched for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, or mechanical tows, whether you're parked at Fernwood State Forest, climbing through the Appalachian foothills toward Pittsburgh, or pulled over on I-70. Your host is also a direct text or call away for quick questions like how to reset the inverter, and RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip if anything escalates. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the driveway so you're not fumbling for it on the shoulder of US-250.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Dillonvale RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is generally welcome, which is great news because Dillonvale sits within a 30-minute drive of both West Virginia and Pennsylvania. You can absolutely cruise to Wheeling, WV (20 miles), explore Ohiopyle and the Laurel Highlands in PA, or push east to the Atlantic, just confirm any travel range limits with your host before booking. Canada travel may be allowed depending on the specific host and their insurance, so message them directly from the listing to confirm if you're planning to cross into Ontario or Quebec. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection package doesn't extend there. Popular cross-border loop: Dillonvale to Gettysburg, PA and back, about 500 miles round trip.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat should I budget for fuel on a Dillonvale RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but it's easy to estimate. Class C motorhomes around Dillonvale typically average 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), travel trailers being towed by a pickup pull 10 to 14 MPG, and smaller campervans (Class B) can hit 16 to 20 MPG. Ohio gas prices generally run a bit below the national average, and you'll find competitive fuel at the Pilot Travel Center off I-70 in St. Clairsville and several Sheetz locations along US-22. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, budget roughly $130 to $160 in fuel. Pro tip: download the GasBuddy app and fill up on the Ohio side of the river, prices are usually lower than in West Virginia.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Dillonvale?
Earlier is better, especially for the popular spots. Jefferson Lake State Park and Salt Fork State Park (the closest big Ohio state parks) open reservations up to 6 months in advance through the official Ohio State Parks reservation system at reserveohio.com, and summer holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) often fill within days of opening. For a normal summer weekend, aim to book 4 to 8 weeks ahead. The Hidden Hollow Campground at Fernwood State Forest is first-come, first-served and free, so plan to arrive Thursday or early Friday for a weekend. If you're going during fall foliage in October, lock in your site by late August. Pro tip: shoulder-season trips (May or late September) almost always have same-week availability.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/reserve-a-place-to-stayWhat are the local driving conditions like around Dillonvale?
Dillonvale driving is genuinely RV-friendly once you know the lay of the land. You're in the rolling Appalachian foothills of eastern Ohio, so expect winding two-lane roads, modest grades, and beautiful river-valley views along OH-150 and OH-647. US-22 and I-70 give you fast, flat access east toward Pittsburgh or west toward Columbus. Watch for low-clearance railroad underpasses in the older coal towns (Mingo Junction and Steubenville have a few under 12 feet) and stick to designated truck routes if your rig is over 11 feet tall. Winter brings snow and occasional ice from late November through March, so check the Ohio Department of Transportation's OHGO traffic site before heading out. Deer are common at dawn and dusk, drive cautiously through wooded stretches.
ohgo.com/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Dillonvale?
You'll find a healthy mix of full-service and rustic options in this corner of Ohio. Jefferson Lake State Park offers electric hookups, vault and flush restrooms, a shared dump station, drinking water spigots, and a swim beach. Piedmont Lake Park provides full hookups (water, sewer, electric) and a marina. Hidden Hollow Campground at Fernwood State Forest is primitive (pit toilets, no hookups, bring your own water), but it's free and quiet. For dumping and refilling water mid-trip, the Pilot Travel Center in St. Clairsville and the dump station at Jefferson Lake are reliable stops. Cell service is solid in town and along the highways but spotty deep inside Fernwood, perfect if you actually want to unplug.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/jefferson-lake-state-parkWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in Dillonvale?
More than you'd expect, today's RVs are basically tiny apartments on wheels. A typical motorhome rental in Dillonvale comes with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen (fridge, freezer, microwave, propane stove, sink), wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof air conditioning, propane furnace, and 30-amp or 50-amp shore power hookup. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, awning, outdoor speakers, and a generator for off-grid stays. Travel trailers and fifth wheels skip the cab but often add more living space, including bunk beds for the kids. Every passenger needs a seat with a seatbelt for travel days. Check the listing photos and amenities list carefully, and message the host if you need something specific like a coffee maker or Wi-Fi hotspot.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/seat-beltsWhat add-ons and options can I get with a Dillonvale RV rental?
Hosts love making your trip easier, so add-ons are common and totally optional. Popular extras on RVezy listings around Dillonvale include linen and towel packages, fully stocked kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, propane fire pits, generators, bike racks, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Delivery and setup is the most-requested add-on, especially for guests heading to Jefferson Lake State Park or Fernwood State Forest. Standard pickup and drop-off happens at the host's location, usually with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough, and most hosts allow flexible windows if you message ahead. Mileage policies vary, expect 100 to 150 free miles per day on most listings, with overage charged around $0.35 to $0.50 per mile. Always confirm fees on the listing before booking.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/jefferson-lake-state-parkHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Dillonvale RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay RVezy directly through the platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never in cash to the host. A security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) and released after the host confirms the rig is returned clean, on time, and damage-free. To avoid any deposit issues, take date-stamped photos and a quick video walk-around of the RV's interior and exterior at both pickup and drop-off, return the rig with fuel and propane matching pickup levels, and empty the black and grey tanks if your agreement requires it. The whole process is built to be transparent, so there are no surprises.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Dillonvale during the winter?
Yes, and winter can be a magical (and quiet) time for RV camping Dillonvale style. Several local hosts keep their rigs available year-round, just filter for four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces. Jefferson Lake State Park's campground is open year-round with electric hookups available, though some water spigots get shut off when temperatures drop below freezing. Cold-weather prep tips: bring extra propane (heating burns through it fast), use a heated drinking water hose, plug into shore power whenever possible, and add a small electric space heater for backup. Winter highs hover in the upper 30s to low 40s°F, with regular snow from December through February. For a cozy, snow-dusted weekend in the Appalachian foothills, it's hard to beat.
