Campgrounds near Gambier, Ohio
Gambier sits in Knox County along the Kokosing River, which the Ohio Department of Natural Resources designated as the state's first water trail. The village is home to Kenyon College and lies roughly an hour east of Columbus, surrounded by farmland, wooded ridges, and the rolling terrain that leads into Ohio's Amish Country. RV travelers use Gambier as a base for river paddling, rail-trail cycling, and day trips into the Mohican region.
Closest to the village, Kokosing Valley Camp and Canoe operates as a family campground and canoe livery directly on the Kokosing River, with hookup sites and river access. Rustic Knolls Campground offers a quieter setting with fishing and swimming ponds, while River Trail Crossing RV Park and Rainbow Springs Family Cmpground round out the closer options.
About 30 minutes east, Butler / Mohican KOA Journey provides pull-through RV sites near Mohican State Park, positioning it as a common overnight stop for travelers heading between Cleveland, Columbus, and Amish Country.
Things to do near Gambier
The Kokosing River is the main draw. Kokosing Valley Camp and Canoe rents canoes, kayaks, and tubes for float trips on the state scenic river, which is known locally for smallmouth bass fishing. The parallel Kokosing Gap Trail, a paved rail-trail, runs through Gambier and connects Mount Vernon, Howard, and Danville for easy family cycling.
A short drive southeast brings RVers into Mohican country, where Mohican State Park offers hiking to Big and Little Lyons Falls, a covered bridge, mountain biking, and tubing on the Clear Fork. Amish Country attractions around Millersburg and Berlin are within an hour and add furniture shops, bakeries, and cheese-making stops to a family itinerary.

Camping season in north-central Ohio typically runs from April or May through October, with most private campgrounds around Gambier operating on that window. Late spring brings rising river levels and generally good canoeing conditions, while wildflowers and moderate temperatures make May and early June comfortable for hiking around the Mohican gorges.
Summer is the peak booking window. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill quickly at Mohican State Park and at nearby private parks including Butler / Mohican KOA Journey and Kokosing Valley Camp and Canoe. Weekday arrivals are noticeably easier. Low water in late summer can limit canoe rentals, so paddlers should call ahead.
Fall offers cooler nights, reliable foliage color through mid to late October, and lighter crowds. Mohican State Park stays open for year-round recreation, but private campgrounds generally close by late October, and water service at many state park sites is shut off through the coldest months.

What to expect at Gambier campgrounds
Campgrounds around Gambier sit in gently rolling farmland and hardwood forest. Sites tend to have moderate tree cover, and river-adjacent campgrounds like Kokosing Valley Camp and Canoe can feel humid on summer afternoons. Cell reception is inconsistent in the Mohican gorges and along parts of the Kokosing corridor.
Most RV parks in the area offer electric hookups, with full-hookup and pull-through sites available at select properties including Butler / Mohican KOA Journey. Expect picnic tables and fire rings at each site, dump stations on property, and camp stores stocking firewood and ice.
Mohican State Park's campground restricts non-registered vehicles during the busy summer season, so plan meetups at day-use areas.
