Camping near Garrettsville, Ohio
Garrettsville sits in Portage County in northeast Ohio, surrounded by farmland, small lakes, and the wooded terrain of the Western Reserve. The village is a practical base for RV travelers exploring the region between Cleveland, Akron, and the Pennsylvania border, with several private campgrounds and one large state park campground within a short drive.
The area is defined by scenic rural beauty and proximity to unique geological formations, most notably Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park just outside town. Kool Lakes Family RV Park and Ridge Ranch Campground sit closest to the village, while Country Acres Campground and Fun Park lies a short drive west near Ravenna. Leisure Lake Membership Association is a members-oriented option in the same corridor.
For public-land camping, Main - West Branch State Park anchors the region with the 2,650-acre Michael J. Kirwan Reservoir, a sandy beach, and a large campground. Combined with the private parks, the mix gives renters options ranging from resort-style family campgrounds with pools and playgrounds to quieter state-park loops on the water.
Things to do around Garrettsville
Water recreation drives most trips. West Branch State Park allows unlimited horsepower on the lake with your own boats and watercraft, and swimming is permitted at the beach. Inside the park, activities include biking, boating, swimming, fishing, disc golf, picnicking, and hiking, and right from the campground campers can launch a boat and play one of two disc golf courses.
Families staying at private parks get on-site recreation as well. Kool Lakes offers three spring-fed lakes including a swimming lake with sandy beach, paddleboats, rowboats, and canoe rentals, plus three playgrounds, sand volleyball courts, a baseball field, a covered pavilion, and a clubhouse. Country Acres adds heated pools, a jumping pillow, playgrounds, sports courts, fishing, and a dog park.
Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park, just north of the village, is a popular half-day stop for hiking through sandstone cliffs and narrow passages.

Summers are warm and partly cloudy and winters are freezing, snowy, and mostly cloudy, with the temperature typically varying from around 20°F to 82°F over the year. Precipitation is fairly evenly distributed, and lake-effect events off Lake Erie can add snowfall quickly in winter.
Most private campgrounds run a warm-season calendar. Kool Lakes is open from May 1 to October 15, with water, electric, sewer, showers, and a dump station available. Country Acres opens for the summer season with the pool available in the warmer months. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, with holiday weekends filling first.
The West Branch State Park campground is open year-round, although most amenities such as the marina, beach, and naturalist programs operate seasonally between May and September. Spring and fall offer cooler nights and fewer crowds, but shoulder-season campers should verify hookup status and which loops are open before booking.

Used James' toy hauler off grid for 3 days. Battery and generator worked well. Hot water for showers too. Everything worked as listed. James delivered and set up the camper at the campground for us and was very easy and professional to work with.

How to book a campsite
State park sites and private parks use separate systems. Reservations at West Branch State Park may be made up to six months in advance online or by calling (866) 644-6727, using the ReserveOhio platform. Reservations open from 7 a.m., six months in advance for all campsites, and sites can book up fast, especially in peak season. Lakefront and full-hookup loops go first for summer weekends.
Private parks book directly. Kool Lakes, Country Acres, and Ridge Ranch take reservations through their websites or by phone. Leisure Lake operates as a membership community, so availability for non-members is limited and should be confirmed in advance.
For summer holidays, book several months out. For midweek stays outside peak, a week or two of lead time is often enough.
What to expect on arrival
Site quality varies. West Branch has 29 full-hookup sites with electric, water, and sewer connections, with the remaining 150-plus sites electric-only, plus a small number of non-electric and equestrian sites. Sites vary considerably in grade and privacy, with some offering direct lake access for launching kayaks and others sitting further inland with more tree coverage. Several reviewers mention significant slopes at certain sites requiring extensive leveling, so bring blocks and check site notes before booking.
Private parks lean family-oriented. Kool Lakes offers rustic tent and trailer sites plus full hook-up pull-through RV spaces that accommodate big rigs. Expect gravel interior roads, tree cover on many sites, and quiet-hour enforcement at family parks.
Cell coverage is generally reliable in the corridor. Grocery, fuel, and propane are available in Garrettsville and nearby Ravenna.
