Campgrounds and RV parks near Gates Mills, OH

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is the anchor attraction. Trails, the Towpath, Brandywine Falls, and the scenic railroad all sit within a short drive, with free parking at Boston Mill Visitor Center, Brandywine Falls, and the Ledges Trailhead. Closer to camp, Punderson State Park offers a 150-acre natural kettle lake for paddling and fishing, plus hiking trails, a swimming beach, and a public golf course. Only hand-powered boats and boats with electric motors are allowed on the lake. Punderson is also known as a winter sports park, with sledding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling when snow cover allows. Families staying at Roundup Lake RV Park or Woodside Lake Park will find on-site swimming, fishing, and planned activities. Day trips into Cleveland reach the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the lakefront, and the West Side Market.

The Northeast Ohio camping season is short and clearly defined. Most private parks operate from spring through late October, with facilities closing during the winter months, and conditions vary significantly across the year with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Streetsboro / Cleveland SE KOA Holiday, for example, operates May 1 through October 31 with full amenities, and its seasonal pool typically runs from late May through mid-September. June through August is peak season. Weekends fill quickly at Punderson and at the private resorts, especially around July 4 and Labor Day, so book well ahead. Late spring and early fall bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and good hiking weather, with fall color typically peaking in mid to late October. Winter is a different story. Lake-effect snow off Lake Erie is common, and winters are cold with very snowy conditions often enhanced by lake-effect snowfall. Punderson stays open year-round, but water and sewer hookups are shut off starting October 31, and most private parks close for the season.

Site quality varies. Punderson's 201-site campground sits on paved roads and offers 15 non-electric sites for tents, 155 electric sites with 20-amp service, and 20 full-service sites with 30/50-amp electric plus water and sewer. Shower houses with flush toilets and hot showers are centrally located, and every site includes a picnic table and fire ring. Bring leveling blocks, as sites vary in size and grade. Private resorts lean toward full hookups, pools, and family programming. The Streetsboro KOA features a seasonal heated pool, stocked fishing ponds, gem mining, a 9-hole disc golf course, themed weekends, and a fenced KampK9 dog park. Bugs can be heavy in wooded sites in summer, so pack repellent and consider a screen room.
