Camping near Guilford Lake
Guilford Lake sits in Columbiana County in northeast Ohio, roughly midway between Salem and Lisbon. Located in northeast Ohio on the west fork of the Little Beaver Creek, Guilford Lake State Park offers a quiet fishing lake and lakeside camping, and was originally constructed as a canal feeder in the 1830s. A small campground is located on a former pine plantation on the north side of the lake; it offers a swim beach and playground. The area is quiet and rural, and it is easy to reach from US-30 and State Route 11, making it a practical base for RV travelers exploring eastern Ohio.
The campground features 37 electric sites, each equipped with a parking pad, picnic table, and fire ring. A central showerhouse provides modern restroom facilities, and a dump station serves RV campers. Private options nearby extend the range of amenities. Salem/Lisbon KOA Holiday, Timashamie Family Campground, Paradise Lake Park N-20, Big Arb's Campground, and Chaparral Family Campground round out the family-oriented private grounds within easy driving distance.
Note that the lake is currently at full drawdown as part of a multi-year dam rehabilitation project expected to conclude in 2027. During this period, water-based activities including swimming and boating are unavailable, though the campground remains operational.
Things to do near Guilford Lake
In normal water years, the lake supports bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish, and hand-powered vessels and boats with motors up to 10 horsepower are permitted on the 396-acre lake. A half-mile hiking trail skirts the scenic lakeshore accessible off of Teegarden Road. A public swim beach and picnic areas ring the shoreline during regular operating seasons.
Beaver Creek State Park lies a short drive southeast and offers a full day out, with canoeing, picnicking, camping and hiking opportunities, plus the restored Gaston's Mill and Pioneer Village, and remnants of the Sandy and Beaver Canal including a restored lock near the mill. Cyclists and families can also ride the paved Little Beaver Creek Greenway Trail, which gradually rises about 450 feet over its 12.5-mile length, running north to Washingtonville.

When to visit Guilford Lake

June - August

63° / 43°F 75 mmCool, colorful foliage; quieter mid-week stays
- winter
December - February
36° / 21°F 62 mmCold with lake-effect snow; campground closed for winter
The park is open year round, but late spring through early fall is the practical camping window for most RV travelers. May through September brings warm days, active bird life, and full campground services including the seasonal camp office. Weekends fill first, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day book out earliest.
Spring and fall are quieter and cooler. The park attracts migrating waterfowl and a variety of songbirds, which makes shoulder-season stays appealing for birding and photography. Fall foliage in the surrounding Appalachian foothills typically peaks in mid-to-late October.
Winter camping is possible but stripped down: the campground is closed for the winter season per recent ODNR notices, and northeast Ohio winters bring cold temperatures and lake-effect snow. During the current dam rehabilitation drawdown, swimming, boating, and lake fishing are off the table regardless of season, so travelers focused on water recreation should confirm lake status with the park office before booking, or plan trips built around hiking, cycling, and nearby state parks instead.

We used the camper for a camping trip over a weekend. The camper was clean and spacious for us and our 3 kids. We had an issue with the air conditioner. When asked about the issue was promptly addressed.

How to book a campsite
State park sites at Guilford Lake are reserved through the ReserveOhio system. There are no walk-in campsites; all are reservable online, and reservations via ReserveOhio.com up to 6 months in advance. Popular lakefront sites for summer weekends tend to be claimed as soon as the 6-month window opens, so booking early is the safest strategy.
Private campgrounds each use their own booking systems. Salem/Lisbon KOA Holiday reserves directly through the KOA website and phone line. Timashamie Family Campground, Paradise Lake Park N-20, Big Arb's Campground, and Chaparral Family Campground accept direct reservations by phone or through their own websites. For any site, confirm rig-length limits and hookup type before arriving.
What to expect on-site
The state park campground is small and lake-facing. Sites are electric with a parking pad, picnic table, and fire ring, and the seasonal camp office stocks firewood, ice, concessions, and basic camping supplies. Pets are permitted on all sites and reservations are required. While the campground is on the smaller side with sites positioned close together (especially in the inner loop), the lakefront locations are noted as being more spacious.
Quiet hours are enforced overnight, and a small camp store operates during the warm season. Private campgrounds nearby vary in style, from the amenity-heavy KOA to smaller family-run grounds that lean rustic. Cell coverage is generally usable across the area, but travelers should expect variable Wi-Fi at rural sites.
