Campgrounds near Hamden, Ohio
Hamden sits in Vinton County, the least populated and most heavily forested county in Ohio, with access to a mix of state parks, state forest campgrounds, and private sites within a short drive. The 292-acre Lake Alma State Park lies in the rugged, scenic territory of Jackson and Vinton counties, where a quiet 60-acre lake and a gentle creek meandering through a wooded valley provide the setting for the developed campground.
West and north of town, Zaleski State Forest is Ohio's second largest state forest, with 25 miles of hiking trails, 50 miles of bridle trails, a 23.5-mile backpack loop, a 16-site horse camp, a hunters camp, and a shooting range. The Vinton County Fairgrounds in McArthur offers seasonal event and overflow camping in town.
For RV travellers looking to combine a Hamden base with the Hocking Hills, Top O' The Caves Campground is within reach to the north, near the state park caves and gorges. Together these options cover full-hookup RV camping at Lake Alma, primitive first-come sites in Zaleski, and private-park amenities closer to the Hocking Hills.
Things to do near Hamden
Bass, bluegill, crappie and channel catfish provide good catches in Lake Alma, where Ohio fishing regulations apply and a valid Ohio fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. Hand-powered vessels and boats with electric motors only are permitted on the lake, a boat launch ramp sits at the northeast edge, and the Lake Alma Boathouse rents canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, pedal boats, and pontoon boats in spring, summer, and fall.
Zaleski State Forest is laced with backpack and bridle trails, including a 23.5-mile backpack loop and roughly 50 miles of bridle trails that draw multi-day hikers and horse riders, and the forest also holds a designated Grouse Management Area and Turkey Management Area for hunters. Families day-tripping north can pair Hamden lodging with the waterfalls and rock shelters of Hocking Hills State Park.

Lake Alma State Park is open year round, but demand is heavily weighted toward late spring through early fall. Summer weekends and holidays fill first at the full-hookup and electric loops, so book several weeks ahead for peak July and August dates. Fall brings cooler nights and hardwood colour through the Vinton County hills.
Zaleski's Atkinson Ridge Hunters Camp follows hunting calendars rather than a standard camping season. It is operational one day before the start of squirrel season until one day after the close of grouse season, then again 14 days before spring wild turkey season through the day after it ends, and all campers must hold a valid Ohio hunting license. The horse camp is reserved for campers using horses.
Winter camping is possible at Lake Alma with limited services, while primitive forest camps see the least traffic outside hunting windows. Spring can be wet, so check trail and road conditions before towing in.
How to book a campsite
Ohio State Park sites, including Lake Alma, use the ReserveOhio system. Lake Alma State Park Campground offers full hookup and electric sites plus a camper cabin, and reservations are required and can be made online or by calling (866) 644-6727. Some sites may be available only from the campground on a first-come, first-served basis.
Zaleski State Forest camps do not take online reservations. Sites at the Atkinson Ridge Hunters Camp are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and the horse camp operates the same way for riders. For the Vinton County Fairgrounds and Top O' The Caves Campground, contact each property directly to confirm availability, hookup type, and any event-week restrictions before arriving with an RV.
What to expect
Expect a rural, forested setting with limited services once outside McArthur and Wellston. The area is some of Ohio's most rugged, scenic territory, and roads into state forest camps are narrow and hilly. Cell coverage is spotty, and visitors to the Atkinson Ridge camp have reported weak service with texts and calls possible but no data, so arrive with fuel and groceries.
Lake Alma is the most RV-friendly option, with electric and full-hookup sites suited to trailers and motorhomes, and a maximum of two vehicles per site, with a camping trailer or motorhome counting as one vehicle. Zaleski's Atkinson Ridge camp offers latrines, picnic tables and fire rings on a small number of primitive sites better suited to tents than big rigs, while the horse camp has 16 sites with latrines, picnic tables, fire rings, and hitching posts.
