RV camping near Hicksville, Ohio
Hicksville sits in the flat farm country of Defiance County in northwest Ohio, roughly three miles from the Indiana state line and about a 45-minute drive from Fort Wayne. The village lies in the Maumee River watershed, a low, glaciated plain once known as the Great Black Swamp, and most nearby camping is set on private wooded lots, small lakes, or along creeks feeding the Maumee and St. Joseph rivers.
RV travelers use Hicksville as a quiet base for weekend trips built around fishing, small-town festivals, and short drives to larger attractions in Fort Wayne, Toledo, and the Auglaize and Maumee river corridors. Nearby options range from full-service parks like Fireside Resort RV Park and River's Edge Campground and Resort to smaller family grounds such as Woodbrige Campground, Indian Springs Campground, and Happy Acres Campground.
Roads in the area are mostly two-lane county highways in good repair, and site access is straightforward for travel trailers, fifth wheels, and larger motorhomes.
Things to do near Hicksville
The Maumee River corridor offers stream fishing, paddling, and canal-era history, with Independence Dam State Park east of Defiance providing river access, picnic areas, and shaded walking paths. Pokagon State Park near Angola, Indiana, adds swimming beaches on Lake James, hiking trails, and a refrigerated toboggan run that operates in winter. Families staying at Fireside Resort RV Park or River's Edge Campground and Resort often day-trip to these spots.
Closer to town, the surrounding farmland is dotted with fishing lakes, produce stands, and small county fairs through summer. Fort Wayne sits about 30 miles west and adds the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, riverfront trails, and the Science Central museum. Toledo and its Metroparks, including Side Cut and the Maumee River trail system, are within about a 90-minute drive.

Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends draw the heaviest bookings, and small parks like Happy Acres Campground and Woodbrige Campground can fill weeks in advance.
June and July bring the warmest weather and the most reliable swimming and paddling conditions, but also the highest humidity and afternoon thunderstorms. September and early October are quieter, with cool nights, dry days, and fall color along the Maumee and St. Joseph rivers.
Winter camping is limited. Ohio State Parks note that some campgrounds close for winter and that closing dates vary based on regional weather conditions, so travelers should confirm status with each park before arrival.
