Camping near Howland Center, Ohio
Howland Center sits in Trumbull County in northeastern Ohio, a short drive from Warren and Youngstown. The area's biggest draw for RV travelers is Mosquito Lake, a 7,850-acre reservoir with a large state-park campground on its shores. Private family campgrounds fill out the options within a 30-minute radius, most of them clustered near Cortland, Bristolville, and Hubbard.
Mosquito Lake State Park is the primary public option, with 234 pet-friendly sites in a mix of full-service, electric, and non-electric configurations, plus two lakeside yurts. Paradise Lakes Family Campground and Paradise Lakes Campground sit on a 100-acre property in Bristolville with four on-site lakes and full-hookup sites. Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground is in nearby Hubbard, just off I-80. Hubbards Haven Family Campground, also in Hubbard, offers 77 sites with a heated swimming pool and full-hookup pull-throughs.
Easy highway access from I-80 and Ohio 11 makes the area a practical base for exploring the Western Reserve and nearby Pennsylvania destinations.
Things to do near Howland Center
Mosquito Lake is the anchor activity. Unlimited-horsepower boating is permitted on portions of the lake, with five launch ramps and a marina, and fishing is popular year-round for walleye, bass, crappie, and northern pike. The state park also has an 18-hole disc golf course at Squirrel Run, a free archery range, and a 5-acre off-leash dog park with a dedicated dog swim area.
Families staying at the private campgrounds get pool or pond swimming, mini-golf, game rooms, and organized weekend events during the season. The Western Reserve Greenway, a paved rail-trail, runs alongside Paradise Lakes and is popular for cycling. Inside the state park, the 8.4-mile Horse Trail and the 5-mile Turkey Run Trail add hiking, mountain biking, and horseback options.

The prime camping window runs from late spring through mid-fall. Most private campgrounds in the area operate seasonally, with Hubbards Haven Family Campground typically open from May through early November and Paradise Lakes running its main season through October. Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground focuses its programming on the summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Mosquito Lake State Park is the exception: it stays open year-round. From November 1 through April 1, full-service sites do not have water at the site and fees are reduced accordingly. Showerhouses close for the winter season, and pit latrines remain available. Water stays accessible at the dump station. The two lakeside yurts are offered from mid-April through October.
Summer weekends and holidays fill quickly, especially waterfront and full-service loops. Late spring and early fall are the sweet spot for cooler nights, thinner crowds, and lower bug pressure around the lake.

Used James' toy hauler off grid for 3 days. Battery and generator worked well. Hot water for showers too. Everything worked as listed. James delivered and set up the camper at the campground for us and was very easy and professional to work with.

We had the most amazing trip and lived in luxury renting from Starla! We had EVERYTHING we needed from clean beds, blankets, kitchen supplies, utensils, towels, and even awesome movie sections for our kids to watch at night. We were celebrating our son’s bday and she even put a little treat in the fridge for him. It was so sweet and he loved it. I am looking forward to renting again in the future! Who would’ve thought camping could ever be so easy and relaxing?!?! I cannot thank you enough Starla for the amazing trip we had!! 💕

How to book
Reservations for Mosquito Lake State Park go through the ReserveOhio system, either online at reserveohio.com or by phone at 866-644-6727. Sites may be booked up to six months in advance, and reservations are required. Peak summer weekends and the yurts book out early, so lock in dates as soon as the window opens.
Private campgrounds handle bookings directly. Paradise Lakes Family Campground and Paradise Lakes Campground in Bristolville take reservations by phone or through their website. Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground and Hubbards Haven Family Campground also accept reservations directly. For larger rigs, call ahead to confirm site length, hookup amperage, and whether pull-through sites are available.
What to expect on the ground
Sites at Mosquito Lake State Park range from open lakeshore to shaded woodland, with full-service, electric (20, 30, and 50 amp), and non-electric options. Pets are allowed on all sites but not inside the yurts. Some sites offer lakeshore views while many are well shaded, and two showerhouses with laundry serve the campground during the main season.
Private parks near Howland Center tend to be family-focused with pools, ponds, playgrounds, and planned weekend activities. Sites are often shaded but can be uneven, so bring leveling blocks. Hubbards Haven has pull-through full-hookup sites convenient to I-80.
Cell service in the area is generally reliable given proximity to the Youngstown-Warren metro. Grocery stores, fuel, and RV supplies are easy to reach from Howland Center itself.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Howland Center, OH
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Howland Center, OH?
Good news: an RV rental in Howland Center is one of the more affordable ways to explore northeast Ohio. On RVezy, travel trailers in the Warren-Youngstown area typically range from about $95 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $180 to $285 per night, and luxury Class A motorhomes start around $275. Booking midweek (Sunday through Thursday) and traveling in May or September can save you 20 to 30 percent versus peak July weekends. For a cheap RV rental in Howland Center, filter by price and consider a smaller travel trailer if you already have a tow vehicle. Many hosts also discount weekly bookings, so a seven-night stay can stretch your budget further.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Howland%20Center%2C%20OhioWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Howland Center, Ohio?
Great news for first-timers: your regular Ohio driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Howland Center. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement is required for any RV on the RVezy platform, even larger Class A motorhomes. Approved drivers must be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country's license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP), which most auto associations issue for a small fee. Most renters are surprised how quickly they go from booking to hitting the road toward Mosquito Lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Howland Center protected if something goes wrong?
Absolutely. Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road around Trumbull County with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), so you can pick the plan that fits how you like to travel, and it covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip. It isn't traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection if there's an incident on your motorhome rental in Howland Center. Pro tip: snap a quick walkaround video at pickup and drop-off. It takes two minutes and makes any future conversation simple.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Howland Center RV trip?
You can book with confidence: RVezy (not the individual host) sets and manages the cancellation policy for every trip, so the experience is consistent no matter which listing you choose. There's a grace period after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund, and refund eligibility after that depends on how far out from your trip you cancel, plus exceptions for circumstances like major weather events. Northeast Ohio winters can occasionally bring lake-effect snow surprises, so it's reassuring to know you're not locked in without options. Review the current RVezy cancellation policy at checkout, message the host with any questions, and book your Ohio RV trip knowing flexibility is built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Howland Center?
Yes, your pup is welcome on plenty of trips. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Howland Center, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings whose hosts gladly welcome dogs and cats. Once you're on the road, Mosquito Lake State Park has leashed-pet-friendly trails and a designated swim beach for dogs, and the Western Reserve Greenway Trail running through Warren is a flat, shaded route perfect for morning walks with your four-legged co-pilot. Bring a collapsible water bowl, a tie-out, and an old towel for muddy paws after lake swims. Message the host before booking to confirm pet details, and you're set for a tail-wagging Ohio adventure.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/mosquito-lake-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Howland Center?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start your trip. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Howland Center and the surrounding Warren-Niles-Youngstown area, meaning they'll drop the RV at your campsite (think Mosquito Lake State Park or Pymatuning State Park), set up the awning, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. This is gold if it's your first time renting an RV, you don't have a tow vehicle, or you'd rather skip driving a big rig on I-80. To find delivery-ready listings, apply the Delivery filter on RVezy and confirm the destination with your host. Most charge a per-mile fee from their home base.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/mosquito-lake-state-parkHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Howland Center?
You've got serious road-trip range from Howland Center. Niagara Falls is about 230 miles northeast (around 4 hours), Cleveland is 70 miles west (90 minutes), Pittsburgh is just 75 miles south, and the Pennsylvania Wilds and Allegheny National Forest sit roughly 130 miles east. Most hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day) with extra miles charged around $0.30 to $0.45 each. If you're planning a longer RV road trip from Howland Center, filter for RV rental with unlimited mileage or message hosts to negotiate a flat-rate mileage package. Pro tip: map your route in Google Maps with the RV's height (usually 10 to 12 feet) saved in the truck profile to avoid low bridges on older Ohio backroads.
transportation.ohio.gov/programs/oversize-overweight/oversize-overweightWhere are the best campgrounds near Howland Center, OH?
You're spoiled for choice. Mosquito Lake State Park (Cortland, about 10 minutes north) offers 218 electric sites right on Ohio's largest inland lake, with a swim beach, boat ramps, and great walleye fishing. Pymatuning State Park (Andover, 30 minutes northeast) straddles the Ohio-Pennsylvania border with shoreline sites and the famous spillway where ducks walk on the backs of fish. Punderson State Park (about an hour west) has a beautiful glacial lake and shaded wooded sites. For full-hookup RV camping in Howland Center's backyard, Yankee Lake RV Resort in Brookfield is a popular pick. Book Ohio State Parks campsites through the official reservation system up to six months in advance, especially for summer weekends.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/mosquito-lake-state-parkWhen is the best time to visit Howland Center in an RV?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Howland Center, with daytime highs from 70 to 85°F and warm evenings ideal for campfires. June and September are the smart-money picks: mild weather, lower campground demand, and fewer mosquitoes than peak July. Fall foliage from late September through mid-October is spectacular along the Mahoning River and across Mosquito Lake, with sugar maples turning brilliant orange and red. Winter trips (December through March) are possible if you book a four-season RV with heated tanks, since lake-effect snow off Lake Erie can dump several inches quickly. Spring (April to mid-May) is muddy but quiet, with budget pricing and excellent crappie fishing at Mosquito Lake.
weather.gov/cle/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, and you won't be on your own. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, water, electrical hookups, the awning, the slide-outs, and dump procedures. They'll answer questions, hand over a cheat sheet for many systems, and stay reachable by phone or message throughout your trip. First time renting an RV from Howland Center? Pick a travel trailer 20 to 25 feet long or a Class C motorhome for an easier driving experience on local roads like OH-46 and I-80. Book a delivery-included listing for your first trip so the host handles setup. Within an hour at the campground, most first-timers feel like pros.
ohiodnr.gov/buy-and-apply/hunting-fishing-boating/camping-cabins/campingWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on I-80, a dead battery at Mosquito Lake, or a propane issue at Pymatuning, help is one phone call away. Roadside dispatches the right service (tire change, jump-start, lockout, fuel delivery, or tow) directly to your location. Your host is also just a message away for quick troubleshooting on quirks specific to that RV. Save the RVezy support number in your phone before pickup, keep the registration and roadside info in the glovebox, and you can relax and enjoy your Ohio RV trip knowing every contingency is handled.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Howland Center RV rental to Canada or other states?
Yes, interstate travel is straightforward. From Howland Center, you can easily cross into Pennsylvania (the border is just 10 miles east), drive down to West Virginia, or head west across Ohio toward Indiana, all with standard RV rental coverage. Cross-border trips into Canada (think Niagara Falls, Ontario, just over 4 hours away) depend on the host's policy and your protection plan, so message the host directly from the listing to confirm before booking and bring your passport. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance limitations. Popular multi-state routes from Howland Center include the Pennsylvania Wilds loop and a Lake Erie shoreline drive through Cleveland, Sandusky, and Toledo.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat about fuel costs for an RV trip from Howland Center?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's predictable. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves (your tow vehicle does, expect 8 to 12 MPG while towing); Class C motorhomes average 8 to 10 MPG; Class A gas rigs average 6 to 9 MPG; campervans get a friendly 16 to 20 MPG. Gas prices in the Warren-Youngstown area typically run a few cents below the national average, with stations along OH-46 and the Niles-Howland corridor offering the easiest big-rig access. Budget around $80 to $120 per day in fuel for a typical Class C running 150 miles. Pro tip: GasBuddy and the Pilot/Flying J app help you find the cheapest diesel and gas with RV-friendly pump lanes near I-80.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Howland Center?
Earlier is better, especially for Ohio State Parks. Mosquito Lake, Pymatuning, and Punderson open campsite reservations six months ahead through the official Ohio State Parks reservation system, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day) fill within minutes of going live. For midweek summer stays, two to four weeks ahead is usually fine. Private parks like Yankee Lake RV Resort and Kool Lake Park can sometimes be booked a week out, but call ahead. Pro tip: book your RV on RVezy first (lock in the rig you love), then book the campground the moment your dates open, then add any festivals or events. If you score a lakefront site at Mosquito Lake, take the win.
ohiostateparks.reserveamerica.com/What's driving like around Howland Center and northeast Ohio?
It's friendlier than you'd think. Howland Center sits at the crossroads of OH-46 and OH-82, with quick access to I-80 (the Ohio Turnpike) and I-680, so you can be out of town and into open countryside within 15 minutes. Roads are flat to gently rolling, with no mountain passes or extreme grades. Watch for lake-effect snow squalls November through March if you're winter camping, and slow down on rural two-lanes where Amish horse-and-buggy traffic is common in nearby Trumbull and Geauga counties. Most bridges are well above 13 feet, but always confirm your RV's exact height at pickup. Pro tip: avoid downtown Youngstown's narrow older streets in a Class A and stick to the Eastwood Mall area when stocking up.
transportation.ohio.gov/programs/highway-safety/highway-safetyWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Howland Center?
Plenty to keep things comfortable. Mosquito Lake State Park offers electric hookups, hot showers, flush toilets, a dump station, and a camp store. Pymatuning State Park has electric sites, beach access, and a dump station near the entrance. Private parks like Yankee Lake RV Resort typically offer full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50 amp electric), Wi-Fi, laundry, and a swimming pool. To dump tanks between trips, the Mosquito Lake dump station is open seasonally to registered campers, and many gas stations along OH-46 sell potable water. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot freshwater hose and a 30-to-50 amp dogbone adapter so you're ready for any site configuration you find.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/mosquito-lake-state-parkWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Howland Center?
More than you might expect. Most RVs on RVezy in the Howland Center area come stocked with a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink, cookware, dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable beds for the listed sleeps count, dinette seating, climate control (furnace and air conditioning), and seatbelts for all designated travel passengers. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and an awning. Wi-Fi and onboard generators vary by listing, so check the amenity list or message the host. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often include slide-outs that dramatically expand the living space at the campsite. Bring your own linens and towels unless the host's listing notes they're included, and you're set.
ohiodnr.gov/buy-and-apply/hunting-fishing-boating/camping-cabins/campingWhat add-ons and pickup options do hosts in Howland Center offer?
Hosts love making your trip easy. Common add-ons for an RV rental in Howland Center include linen and towel packages ($25 to $60), camp kitchen kits, generators ($15 to $30 per day), bike racks, kayaks, fire pits, outdoor camp chairs, and propane refills. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup (a per-mile fee from their base), and some offer pickup from Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport (YNG) for fly-in renters. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per day with overage charges of $0.30 to $0.45 per mile, though some campervan rental Howland Center options come with unlimited mileage. Always check the listing's specific pickup and dropoff times. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a stocked kitchen kit for a true turnkey first-timer experience.
flyyng.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It's simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at booking (never cash to the host), and your payment is processed by RVezy directly. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before the trip starts, and the amount is shown clearly on the listing and at checkout. As long as you return the RV in the condition you received it, with the agreed fuel and tank levels, the deposit is released after your trip ends. Pro tip: do the walkaround video together with the host at pickup, refuel at the same station you used at pickup, and dump the tanks at Mosquito Lake's dump station before returning. Easy deposit refund, easy 5-star review.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Howland Center for winter or cold-weather trips?
Yes, winter RV trips in northeast Ohio are an under-the-radar adventure. Some RVezy hosts in the Howland Center area list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and high-output furnaces designed to handle Trumbull County's January lows (often in the teens and 20s°F with lake-effect snow). For winter RV camping in Howland Center, plan to stay at a park with reliable shore power like Yankee Lake or a winter-open private campground, since most state park campgrounds close their water systems from late October to mid-April. Filter for four-season or winterized listings, message the host about cold-weather operation, and pack extra propane. The reward: snowy quiet, empty trails at Mosquito Lake, and roaring campfires under crystal-clear skies.
