Campgrounds and RV parks near Junction City, OH

The main draw is Hocking Hills State Park, roughly 30 to 40 minutes south. There are seven major hiking areas in the park, all one-way trail systems, including Ash Cave, Old Man's Cave, Rock House, Conkle's Hollow, Cedar Falls, Cantwell Cliffs, and Whispering Cave. The Grandma Gatewood Trail runs about six miles connecting three of these areas via the Upper Falls. Off the trail, Lake Logan and Rose Lake offer paddling and fishing, and the Hocking Hills Canopy Tours run zip lines nearby. The Hocking Hills region is also one of the darker-sky pockets in Ohio, and the John Glenn Astronomy Park near Old Man's Cave hosts public viewing sessions. OHV riders use Perry State Forest, which offers about 16 miles of APV trails on former strip-mine terrain, plus the Monday Creek system in Wayne National Forest for off-highway-vehicle riding.

Summer is peak season. Weekends at Hocking Hills State Park book out months ahead, and private parks around Logan follow the same curve. Southeastern Ohio has warm days and cool nights in May and June, with the warmest water and swimming conditions arriving in July and August. Expect humidity, afternoon thunderstorms, and full campgrounds from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Spring and fall are the practical shoulder seasons. Wildflowers peak in April and May along the gorges, and fall color typically runs mid to late October. Trails can be muddy and slick in spring, and cave areas hold moisture year-round. Winter camping is possible but limited. Hocking Hills State Park Campground stays open year round, with the dump station and Shower House 1 available in the off-peak season from November through early April. Some private parks close from late fall through early spring, and the Perry State Forest APV area closes from the second Monday in December until the first Friday in April, so ATV-focused visitors should plan around that window.

The terrain is Appalachian foothills: rolling ridges, narrow hollows, and winding two-lane roads. Larger rigs should map the route in advance and avoid shortcuts on county roads. State Route 664 into the Old Man's Cave area is the standard approach and handles RV traffic, but trailhead parking fills by mid-morning on summer weekends. Hookups vary widely. The Hocking Hills State Park Campground has 47 full-hookup sites and 122 electric sites with 20-, 30-, and 50-amp service, plus non-electric sites and Sherman Cabins. Private parks near Junction City range from full-hookup pull-throughs to primitive tent areas, and some cater specifically to ATV riders with trail-access sites. Swimming is not permitted in waterfalls, creeks, or ponds inside the state park, and trails and picnic areas are open from a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset. Cell service is spotty in the gorges, so download maps and reservations before arrival.
