Campgrounds near Kalida, Ohio
Kalida is a small village in Putnam County in northwest Ohio, roughly halfway between Lima and Findlay and a short drive off I-75. The surrounding countryside is flat farmland cut by the Ottawa River, with several private RV parks within easy reach and Ohio State Park campgrounds in the wider region for weekend trips.
The closest option is Gilboa Quarry RV Park & Campground at 3763 Old State Route 224 in Ottawa, a former limestone quarry now known for scuba diving, snorkeling, and swimming in spring-fed water. Gilboa Quarry offers sites for trailers, fifth wheels, and up to Class A motorhomes, with power up to 50 amps and a mix of RV Park Sites with water and electric plus Premium and Standard sites with electric and on-site well water access. Huggy Bear Campground and RV Sales, Woodbrige Campground, Twin Lakes Campground, and Sun Valley Family Campgrounds round out the nearby private options.
RV travelers using Kalida as a base can reach Lake Erie, the Indian Lake area, and the Wapakoneta corridor in about an hour, making it a practical Midwest overnight stop as well as a weekend destination.
Things to do near Kalida
Water is the main draw at Gilboa Quarry. The property has a designated swimming beach with graduated entry, and campers use the quarry for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and paddle boarding, with calm water and no boat traffic. The spring-fed quarry typically maintains 30 to 40 feet of visibility, sometimes exceeding 80 feet under ideal conditions, which is unusual for the region and draws divers from across the Midwest.
Beyond the campground, the area offers county parks, the Ottawa River for paddling, and small-town Ohio attractions. In Kalida itself, Pioneer Days is held on the weekend after Labor Day on the square in downtown Kalida, with a parade, car show, carnival rides, craft show, and live music. It is billed as Ohio's oldest continuously running festival, tracing its origins to an 1873 settlers picnic. Wapakoneta's Armstrong Air and Space Museum and the Lake Erie islands are within day-trip range.

Northwest Ohio has a four-season climate with a clear camping peak from late May through early October. Summer brings the warmest water and the busiest weekends, spring and early fall offer moderate temperatures and fewer campers, and October delivers autumn foliage with cool campfire evenings. May is typically the wettest month, so early-spring campers should expect soft ground and occasional storms.
Winter camping in the region is limited. Gilboa Quarry welcomes RVers year-round, though some services may be reduced in the winter months. Ohio State Parks in the wider region operate many campgrounds year-round, but some close for winter and dates vary by park based on regional weather.
Book early for holiday weekends and for the Pioneer Days weekend, when local sites and rooms in Kalida fill quickly. Gilboa Quarry notes that during peak summer weekends, sites typically fill about two to three weeks in advance, so early reservations help.
How to book
Private campgrounds around Kalida each use their own booking channel. Gilboa Quarry takes reservations online through Campspot: pick dates, choose a site based on hookup needs (RV Park Sites with water and electric, or Premium and Standard sites with electric only and on-site well water access), review options, and complete the reservation. All RV campers must check in at the front office on arrival, regardless of reservation status. For Huggy Bear, Woodbrige, Twin Lakes, and Sun Valley Family Campgrounds, contact each operator directly for availability.
For Ohio State Park campgrounds in the wider region, bookings run through reserveohio.com or the state call center at 866-644-6727. Reservations open six months ahead of the arrival date for campsites, and twelve months ahead for cabins and day-use facilities.
What to expect on site
Expect straightforward Midwest RV parks rather than resort-style destinations. Gilboa Quarry is the standout for on-site recreation, with sites near the water, a dump station included for overnight guests, restrooms with hot showers, a convenience store, and firewood available. Sites at Gilboa are back-in only, with no pull-through sites, so plan arrival accordingly.
Roads around Kalida are rural and generally easy for large rigs, with I-75 the main artery about twenty-five minutes from Lima and thirty minutes from Findlay. The setting is quiet and rural rather than highway-adjacent. Cell coverage is workable in town but not uniform in outlying county areas, so downloading maps before arrival is wise. Ohio State Park sites in the wider region typically include a parking pad, picnic table, and fire ring, with electric available at many sites.
