Camping near Kenton, Ohio
Kenton sits in Hardin County in west-central Ohio, roughly 57 miles northwest of Columbus and 70 miles south of Toledo, along US-68 and US-30. The area is flat farm country cut by county roads, with Indian Lake State Park about 25 miles south and Columbus reachable in under two hours. That location makes Kenton a practical base for RV travelers who want quiet fairground-style stays in town plus lake and state-park recreation within a short drive.
Options close to town are limited but functional. Hardin County Fairgrounds offers electric and water hookups on the south side of Kenton. A few miles out, Back Forty Ltd and Arrowhead Lake Campground add ponds, spacious sites, and family amenities in rural settings.
For lake access, Venture Out Resorts, Indian Lake Resort and Welcome Woods RV Campgrounds are set up around Indian Lake, where boating, swimming beaches, and a paved bikeway anchor most summer trips.
Things to do around Kenton
Water recreation drives most trips. Indian Lake covers roughly 5,800 acres and offers unlimited-horsepower boating, fishing, jet skiing, and swimming, and the park operates year-round. Indian Lake is the only inland lake in Ohio with lighted buoys for night navigation. Swimming is permitted at Old Field Beach and Fox Island Beach, a camper beach near the campground, and four designated boat/swim areas. A paved multi-use bikeway runs about 3.5 miles on the West Bank between Old Field Beach and Lakeview Harbor.
On land, families can hike short trails like the 1.4-mile Cherokee Trail west of the campground and the Pew Island loop, cast from shoreline piers, or use the archery range near the Moundwood Boat Ramp. In town, the Hardin County Courthouse square and small-town diners round out a slower day.
Back Forty Ltd adds a fishing pond, a swimming pond, and a lodge that works well for kids on rainy afternoons.

The practical RV season in this part of Ohio runs from late April through late October. Back Forty Ltd closes for the season from late October through the end of April, and several private lake campgrounds around Indian Lake operate on a similar May-to-October window. Indian Lake State Park Campground itself operates year-round, though services thin out in winter.
Summer is peak. Sites can book up fast, especially on holiday weekends, when day-trippers and campers descend on the lake and the park gets busy. The Hardin County Fair in early September fills local sites quickly, so travelers heading to Kenton that week should reserve early.
Shoulder seasons trade heat for availability. Late spring brings green pastures and higher water; October delivers rural fall color along Hardin County backroads before private parks winterize. Winter camping is possible at Indian Lake for hardy travelers, and under proper winter conditions the park allows ice fishing, ice skating, and snowmobiling on the frozen lake surface.

How to book Kenton-area campgrounds
Indian Lake State Park uses the state reservation system. Campsites are reserved through the ReserveOhio website, with reservations opening at 7am, six months in advance for all campsites. Reservations can also be made by phone at 1-866-644-6727. Waterfront and full-hookup sites for summer weekends often go the same day they open, so book as early as possible for peak season and holiday weekends.
Private parks like Back Forty Ltd, Arrowhead Lake Campground, Venture Out Resorts, Indian Lake Resort, and Welcome Woods RV Campgrounds take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Two to four weeks ahead is usually enough outside of holiday weekends and fair week.
For Hardin County Fairgrounds, call ahead to confirm hookups and availability, particularly during fair week in early September.
What to expect on arrival
Sites near Kenton lean toward gravel or grass pads with electric and water hookups, plus shared dump stations. Hardin County Fairgrounds is a straightforward in-town stop with electric and water hookups, but no shade structures or resort amenities. Back Forty Ltd runs a family-focused campground with quiet hours, so expect a call-ahead check-in.
Around Indian Lake, sites vary widely. Some are open and sunny near the water, while others sit under mature oak, sycamore, and maple. Cell coverage is generally reliable across Hardin and Logan counties, and grocery runs to Kenton, Bellefontaine, or Russells Point are short.
RVers should bring a full sewer hose kit, leveling blocks for grassy sites, and an Ohio fishing license if planning to fish. Pets are welcome at most private parks with vaccination records, and at Indian Lake there is an off-leash dog park, though dogs are not permitted on the designated swimming beaches.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Kenton, OH
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Kenton, OH?
RV rental in Kenton, OH is an affordable way to explore west-central Ohio, with most listings on RVezy ranging from about $90 to $250 per night depending on the size, age, and features of the rig. Travel trailers typically sit at the lower end, while Class C motorhomes and fifth wheels land mid-range, and larger Class A motorhomes can run higher. To find a cheap RV rental in Kenton, book midweek, travel during the shoulder months of April or October, and sort listings by lowest price. Hardin County is a quiet rural pocket of Ohio, so nightly rates here are often more reasonable than in Columbus or Dayton, while still putting you close to Indian Lake and Ohio Amish Country.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kenton%2C%20OhioDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Kenton, Ohio?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Kenton, Ohio. The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) exempts recreational vehicles used for personal travel from Commercial Driver's License (CDL) requirements, so your standard Class D license covers virtually every RV on RVezy, including Class A motorhomes, Class C rigs, campervans, and travel trailers. You'll need to be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country before your trip and pair it with your home license. That's it, you're ready to hit Route 68 toward Indian Lake.
bmv.ohio.gov/dl-cdl-exemptions.aspxIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included for trips from Kenton?
Yes, every RV rental in Kenton booked through RVezy includes a protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out toward Lawrence Woods State Nature Preserve or Indian Lake with peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout, not the host. If you get a flat on US-30 or have a mechanical issue at a campground, one phone call gets help dispatched. RVezy protection is designed specifically for peer-to-peer RV rentals and is one of the biggest reasons first-time renters feel confident booking.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat is the cancellation policy if my Kenton RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy on every reservation, not the individual host, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you have time to confirm dates, time off work, and your campground reservations. Refund amounts after the grace period depend on how far in advance you cancel. You will see the full cancellation policy details at checkout before you pay. Pro tip: book your RVezy rental first, then reserve your Indian Lake State Park site on ReserveOhio, since the state park system also lets you modify reservations.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Kenton RV rental?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Kenton is easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you will see listings where hosts welcome dogs, often with a small pet fee for extra cleaning. Hardin County is a great place to travel with pets, and Indian Lake State Park (about 25 minutes south) has pet-friendly campsites and trails to enjoy together. Message the host before booking to confirm any breed or size preferences. Bring a tie-out, a collapsible water bowl, and proof of rabies vaccination in case a campground asks at check-in.
parks.ohiodnr.gov/parks/indian-lakeCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Kenton?
Yes, RV delivery in Kenton is offered by many RVezy hosts, and it is one of the easiest ways for first-time renters to start a trip. Filter listings by Delivery and you will find hosts who will tow or drive the rig directly to Indian Lake State Park Campground in Lakeview, the Hardin County Fairgrounds, or even your driveway, set it up, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees usually scale with distance from the host's location. Pro tip: ask about a park-and-stay delivery, where the host parks the RV for the duration so you never have to tow or drive it yourself.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kenton%2C%20OhioHow far can I travel from Kenton on an RV trip?
You can cover a lot of ground on a Kenton RV trip thanks to its central Ohio location. Indian Lake State Park is just 25 miles south, Hocking Hills State Park is about 110 miles southeast, Cedar Point on Lake Erie sits roughly 110 miles north, Cuyahoga Valley National Park is around 145 miles northeast, and Indiana Amish country around Shipshewana is about 180 miles west. Most RVezy hosts in the Kenton area offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles available at a modest per-mile rate. Looking for unlimited mileage? Filter listings and message hosts directly, some offer unlimited mileage packages ideal for week-long road trips from Kenton.
parks.ohiodnr.gov/parks/hocking-hillsWhat are the best campgrounds near Kenton, OH?
The best campgrounds near Kenton, OH cover everything from full-hookup resorts to quiet rural fairground stays. Hardin County Fairgrounds on Fairground Road has electric and water hookups, showers, and a dump station right in town. Back 40 Campground, about 10 miles south off State Route 68, spans 34 acres with two stocked ponds, full hookups, and a dog swim area. Indian Lake State Park Campground in Lakeview (about 25 minutes south) has over 450 sites including waterfront and full hookup options. Sun Valley Family Campgrounds and Acheson's Resort also serve the Indian Lake area with pools and family amenities. Pro tip: reserve Indian Lake sites through ReserveOhio.com up to six months in advance, especially for summer weekends.
parks.ohiodnr.gov/parks/indian-lakeWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Kenton?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Kenton runs from late April through mid-October, with daytime highs climbing from the mid-60s in spring to the mid-80s in July and August, and cooling back to the 60s by October. June and September are arguably the best months: warm days, cool nights in the 50s, fewer mosquitoes, and easier campground availability. Fall foliage in Hardin County peaks in mid-October and is gorgeous along the rural backroads. Winter RVing is possible but limited, as most private campgrounds in central Ohio close from November through March, and overnight lows regularly drop into the teens. If you're booking summer, aim for weekday arrivals to dodge weekend crowds at Indian Lake.
weather.gov/iln/I've never rented an RV before. How does it work in Kenton?
First time renting an RV? You are in great company, and Kenton is a forgiving place to start because the roads are flat, traffic is light, and campgrounds are close by. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering slide-outs, the generator, water system, propane, awning, and dump valves. You can message the host with questions before you book, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Many Kenton-area hosts even offer delivery and setup so you never have to drive the rig yourself. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome or a 20 to 25 foot travel trailer, they are easy to maneuver on rural US-68 and SR-309.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down during my Kenton RV trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat tire on US-30, a dead battery at Indian Lake State Park, or a mechanical issue near Bellefontaine, one phone call dispatches help to your location. Roadside assistance typically handles tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to a qualified repair facility. Your host is also a phone call away for questions about quirks of their specific rig, and RVezy support steps in to help coordinate anything bigger. Pro tip: snap a photo of your rig's tire size, license plate, and VIN at pickup so you can share details quickly if you ever need to call for help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Kenton RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Interstate travel is allowed on a Kenton RV rental, and Ohio's central location makes it easy to plan a multi-state RV road trip from Kenton. Popular routes head west into Indiana Amish country, south to Kentucky's Mammoth Cave, or east through Pennsylvania toward the Poconos. Cross-border travel into Canada depends on the specific host and their insurance, so message the host directly from the listing page before booking if Canada is on your itinerary, and pack your passport. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Within the U.S., your standard Ohio-issued or home-state driver's license is all you need.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect and how do I budget for gas?
Budgeting fuel is simple once you know your rig: campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, Class A motorhomes run 6 to 10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG combined). Ohio gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, hovering around $3.10 to $3.50 per gallon at stations along US-30 and US-68 in Hardin County. For a sample budget: a round trip from Kenton to Hocking Hills (about 220 miles total) in a Class C burns roughly 22 gallons, or around $70 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Kenton or Marysville where prices tend to be lower than at lakeside towns.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Kenton?
Book early for the best spots. Indian Lake State Park opens reservations exactly six months out on ReserveOhio.com starting at 7 a.m., and waterfront and full hookup sites for summer weekends often disappear the same day they open. For Hardin County Fairgrounds and private parks like Back 40 Campground, two to four weeks ahead is usually enough except around the Hardin County Fair in early September, when local sites fill fast. Shoulder season (April, May, late September, October) is much more relaxed and you can often book a week out. Pro tip: if your preferred Indian Lake site is taken, set a cancellation alert, sites open up frequently as plans change.
reserveohio.com/What are driving conditions like around Kenton, Ohio?
Driving conditions around Kenton are some of the easiest in the country for an RV. The terrain is flat to gently rolling farmland, US-30 is a wide four-lane divided highway that runs right past Kenton, and US-68 and SR-309 are well-maintained two-lane routes with light traffic. There are no mountain passes, tight tunnels, or low clearances to worry about within an hour of town. Watch for slow-moving Amish buggies on county roads in Hardin County's Old Order Amish community, especially around Mt. Victory, and keep an eye on the sky in spring and summer when thunderstorms can roll across the plains quickly. Winter brings occasional snow squalls off Lake Erie, so check the National Weather Service forecast if you're traveling November through March.
weather.gov/iln/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Kenton?
Campgrounds around Kenton are well-equipped for RV camping. Indian Lake State Park offers 30 and 50 amp electric, full hookups (water, sewer, electric) on premium sites, modern showerhouses, flush toilets, laundry, a dump station, a swimming pool, and a camp store. Hardin County Fairgrounds provides electric and water hookups, restrooms, showers, and an on-site dump. Back 40 Campground includes full hookups, a dump station, and clean shower facilities. Most private parks in the area have potable water fills at the entrance and dump stations included with your stay. Pro tip: confirm your rig's amp service with the host (30 vs 50 amp) and pack a 30-to-50 amp adapter, since some older sites at Indian Lake are still 30 amp only.
parks.ohiodnr.gov/parks/indian-lakeWhat's actually inside a typical Kenton RV rental?
A typical motorhome rental in Kenton comes ready for the road with real beds (a queen in the master is standard), a full kitchen with refrigerator, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with both AC and furnace, and dinette seating that often converts to extra sleeping space. Most listings sleep four to eight people. Many include a TV with DVD or smart functionality, a generator for off-grid power, outdoor awnings, and a propane grill hookup. WiFi is rarely built in but many travelers tether to their phone. Class B campervans are more compact (smaller fridge, wet bath) while Class A motorhomes often add washer/dryer combos and multiple slide-outs. Seatbelts are provided for all designated travel seats.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Most Kenton hosts offer helpful add-ons that make your trip smoother: linen and bedding packages, kitchen kits with pots, plates, and utensils, extra generator hours if you plan to boondock, portable grills, bike racks, and outdoor chairs. Pickup and dropoff is usually at the host's location in or around Kenton, and most hosts request a one to three hour window so they have time for a thorough walkthrough and inspection. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night with reasonable overage rates set by the host. Pro tip: book the bedding and kitchen add-ons even if you think you can pack your own, it saves serious time and trunk space on a family RV trip Kenton-bound from out of state.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kenton%2C%20OhioHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Kenton RV rental?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through RVezy, so you never hand cash or a check to the host. You pay your rental total (nightly rate plus fees and any chosen add-ons) at booking using a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup, with the amount set by the host based on the rig's value, and it is released back to you after dropoff as long as the RV is returned clean, undamaged, and with tanks handled per the listing. Pro tip: do a quick video walkaround at pickup and dropoff with the host, it is the single best way to avoid any deposit dispute.
