Camping near Lexington, Ohio
Lexington sits in Richland County in north-central Ohio, just south of Mansfield and within easy reach of the Mohican region, one of the state's most popular outdoor destinations. RV travelers use the town as a base for the Clear Fork Valley, Pleasant Hill Lake, and the surrounding state parks and forests.
Campground options range from full-hookup private parks to state-park and reservoir campgrounds. Charles Mill Lake Park, operated by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District, sits on 2,000 acres in Richland and Ashland Counties around a 1,350-acre lake and features two campgrounds (Main Camp and Eagle Point) with a combined total of more than 400 campsites and three patio cabins. Malabar Farm State Park adds a smaller horseman's camp with primitive sites suitable for both equestrians and family campers.
River Trail Crossing RV Park provides a closer full-service option, while Butler / Mohican KOA Journey and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Columbus North add family-focused resorts within driving range. Together, these properties cover the full range from primitive to resort-style camping.
Things to do near Lexington
The Mohican area anchors most trip itineraries. Clear Fork Gorge, Lyons Falls, and the Mohican State Scenic River are among the standout natural features for hikers and paddlers. The 25-mile EPIC Mohican Mountain Bike Trail, also open to hikers, loops the gorge and passes through both the state park and state forest. Local liveries in Loudonville run canoe, kayak, tube, and raft trips on the Clear Fork.
Malabar Farm State Park preserves the working farm of Pulitzer Prize-winning author and conservationist Louis Bromfield; visitors can stroll the barn area, tour the Big House, and join programs on agriculture, nature, and wildlife.
On the water, Charles Mill Lake has a 10-horsepower limit and supports sailing, small-boat cruising, and fishing for bass, crappie, and channel catfish. Mansfield adds indoor attractions for rainy days, including the Ohio State Reformatory and Kingwood Center Gardens.

North-central Ohio has four distinct seasons. Summer is the busy period, with warm days and full programming; from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, Mohican State Park runs daily naturalist activities including amphitheater movies on weekends, nature hikes, family games, and grist mill tours. Popular weekends fill quickly, so book several weeks out.
Spring and fall bring cooler nights, fewer crowds, and strong fishing. The Mohican campground swimming pool is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, so shoulder-season stays trade the pool for foliage and quieter trails. At Charles Mill Lake Park, the swim beach and peninsula are closed until summer 2026 for a major renovation of the beach area, though the rest of the park remains open.
Winter camping is limited but possible. From mid-November to March 31, full hook-up sites at Mohican do not have water at the site and fees are reduced accordingly. In the Class A campground, sites 46-64, 86-108, and 133-153 are open all winter, and Class B sites 1-23 stay open until the first Monday after the second gun season closes in mid-December. Confirm dates with the park before arrival.
How to book
Ohio State Parks use a single reservation platform, ReserveOhio. Campsites and unique rentals may be reserved up to six months in advance online at reserveohio.com or by calling (866) 644-6727; cabins may be reserved up to twelve months in advance. This applies to both Mohican State Park and Malabar Farm State Park. New inventory opens each day at 7 a.m. Eastern.
Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District parks, including Charles Mill Lake Park, use a separate booking system at reserve.mwcd.org. The reservation holder must be at least 18 and must stay on the site. Check-in is 4 p.m., cabin check-out is 10 a.m., campsite check-out is 2 p.m., and quiet hours run from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Private parks such as River Trail Crossing RV Park, Butler / Mohican KOA Journey, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Columbus North book directly through their own websites or brand portals.
What to expect on the ground
Sites vary widely by park. Mohican's main campground offers full hook-up, electric, and non-electric sites. All campsites have a picnic table and a fire ring, up to two pets are allowed per site, and visitors are not permitted to drive through the campground from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The site mix is 100 electric, 51 full hook-up, and 33 non-electric.
At reservoir parks, expect a mix of seasonal and short-stay guests. Charles Mill Lake Park carries a large number of seasonal sites, and only a few areas of the two campgrounds are set aside for short-term campers. Some short-stay sites at Eagle Point are gravel and others are grass, and some may be difficult to level, so ask the office to match a site to your rig.
Pets are generally welcome on leash across the area's public campgrounds, and cell coverage in the Mohican gorge can be limited. Firewood policies vary by park, so buy on site when in doubt.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Lexington, OH
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Lexington, OH?
An RV rental in Lexington is one of the most affordable ways to experience north-central Ohio. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs land between $250 and $400. Prices peak during Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course race weekends from June through September and dip noticeably in spring and fall. To save, book midweek, target shoulder season in April or October, and use the price filter to find a cheap RV rental Lexington travelers love. Pro tip: many Mansfield-area hosts offer weekly discounts if you stretch your trip past five nights.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lexington%2C%20OhioWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Lexington?
Here is the easy part: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lexington. Ohio does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels available on RVezy. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older and complete a quick ID verification during booking, which happens entirely inside the platform. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit and you are set. Your host will walk you through the rig at pickup so you feel confident before turning the key.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs rental protection included when I book an RV in Lexington?
Yes, every RV rental in Lexington booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host), letting you decide how much extra cushion you want for damage protection during your trip. Coverage tiers differ in deductible and included benefits, so review them on the booking page before confirming, especially if you are a first-time renter heading into Mohican country. Pro tip: pair higher-tier coverage with a quick walkaround video at pickup to document the RV's condition.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Lexington RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy at the platform level, not the individual host, so the rules are consistent across every Lexington listing. After booking you have a short grace period during which you can cancel for a full refund, and refund amounts after that window depend on how far in advance you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds the booking or helps you rebook with travel credits. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Mid-Ohio race weekend rigs, knowing the grace period has you covered if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Lexington?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental Lexington dog parents love is just a filter click away on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see motorhomes and trailers where pups are welcome (some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee, clearly listed on the page). Once you've got the rig, your dog will love nearby Gorman Nature Center's leashed trails, the dog-friendly paths at Malabar Farm State Park, and the Richland B&O Bike Trail that runs right through Lexington. Most area campgrounds, including Butler/Mohican KOA and Charles Mill Lake Park, allow leashed pets. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm your specific breed and size are a fit.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/malabar-farm-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or driveway in Lexington?
Yes, RV delivery Lexington travelers can count on is one of the best parts of booking through RVezy. Many Richland County hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to your campground, vacation rental, or even your own driveway, then set it up, level it, hook up the utilities, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery is especially popular for Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course race weekends and for first-time renters heading to Mohican State Park who'd rather skip towing a trailer. Use the Delivery filter to see hosts who offer it, along with their per-mile rates. Pro tip: ask about a stationary setup package so you never have to move the RV yourself.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/mohican-state-parkHow far can I drive, and are unlimited mileage rentals available?
You've got plenty of room to roam on a Lexington RV trip. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage allowance, typically 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles billed at a per-mile rate listed right on the page. Many hosts also offer RV rental with unlimited mileage as an add-on or upgrade, which is great if you're road-tripping further afield. From Lexington you can reach Cleveland in about 80 miles, Columbus in 75 miles, Cedar Point in Sandusky in 70 miles, Hocking Hills State Park in 110 miles, and Pittsburgh in roughly 175 miles. Pro tip: estimate your total route before booking and ask the host for a custom mileage package to save money.
transportation.ohio.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Lexington, OH?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Lexington offers within a 30-minute drive. Top picks include Butler/Mohican KOA Holiday in Butler (full hookups, pool, and direct access to Mohican State Park trails), Charles Mill Lake Park in Mansfield (lakefront sites with electric, run by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District), Mohican Adventures Campground in Loudonville (canoe livery on-site), Pleasant Hill Lake Park near Perrysville (great for boating), and Malabar Farm State Park campground (heritage farm setting). Pro tip: for race weekends, the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course operates its own on-site camping, but it sells out months in advance so reserve early.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/mohican-state-parkWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Lexington, OH?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for a Lexington RV trip, with summer highs in the upper 70s to mid 80s Fahrenheit and crisp fall days in the 60s. June through August brings the busiest race and festival weekends at Mid-Ohio, while late September and early October deliver Ohio's famous fall colors across the Mohican region, often the prettiest time of year. Spring (April to May) is quieter and budget-friendly, though pack a rain jacket. Winters are cold (often 20s to 30s F with snow), but a handful of four-season hosts still rent. Pro tip: book the first two weekends of October for peak foliage and shoulder-season pricing.
weather.gov/cle/I've never rented an RV before. How does it actually work?
First time renting an RV? You're going to love how simple RVezy makes it. After you book, your Lexington host will meet you at pickup (or at your delivery location) and give you a hands-on walkthrough covering the generator, water systems, propane, slide-outs, leveling, and dumping, usually 30 to 60 minutes long. You can message them anytime during your trip with questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every booking. For your first time, consider a smaller Class C motorhome or a delivered travel trailer so you don't have to tow. Pro tip: start with a two- or three-night stay at Charles Mill Lake Park before tackling a longer route.
ohiodnr.gov/What happens if I have a breakdown or flat tire during my trip?
You are covered: every RVezy booking in Lexington includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are parked at Mohican State Park or pulled over on State Route 97. The roadside team helps with flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to a qualified service center. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy app for anything system-specific like tripped breakers or a finicky slide-out, and RVezy support backs you up. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's tire pressure sticker at pickup so you can spot issues early on Ohio's rural two-lanes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Lexington, OH?
An RV road trip from Lexington opens up some of the Midwest's best drives. Top routes include the Mohican Loop (30 minutes south to Mohican State Park's hemlock gorge and covered bridges), the Lake Erie run to Cedar Point and Marblehead Lighthouse (about 75 miles north), Hocking Hills State Park with Old Man's Cave (110 miles southeast), Amish Country around Berlin and Sugarcreek (60 miles east), and Cuyahoga Valley National Park near Cleveland (90 miles northeast). You can even cross into Pennsylvania for Presque Isle State Park in about 3 hours. Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed with many hosts; just message before booking. Trips to Mexico aren't permitted on RVezy rentals.
nps.gov/cuva/index.htmWhat's the fuel budget like for a motorhome rental in Lexington?
Fuel is easier on the wallet than you might think. Motorhome rental Lexington travelers typically see fuel economy around 8 to 10 miles per gallon for Class A rigs, 10 to 14 mpg for Class C, and 18 to 22 mpg for a campervan rental Lexington adventurers favor. Ohio gas prices generally run a bit below the national average. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop through Mohican and Amish Country, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up at the I-71 Lexington exits where prices tend to beat in-town stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lexington?
Plan ahead and you will score the best sites. Ohio State Parks (including Mohican and Malabar Farm) open reservations up to six months in advance through the official ReserveOhio system, and prime summer weekends at Mohican often sell out within hours of release. Muskingum Watershed parks like Pleasant Hill and Charles Mill use their own reservation portal, also bookable months in advance. Private parks like Butler/Mohican KOA accept reservations far in advance, and Mid-Ohio race-weekend camping fills almost immediately when it opens. Pro tip: for an October fall-foliage family RV trip Lexington locals rave about, set a calendar reminder for the first business day exactly six months before your target date.
reserveohio.com/What are driving conditions like around Lexington, OH?
Driving an RV around Lexington is refreshingly low-stress compared to big-city rentals. I-71 runs just west of town with wide lanes and easy RV-friendly exits, and US-42 and State Route 97 are the main local routes with gentle rolling terrain through Richland County farmland. Watch for twistier two-lanes around Mohican State Park and Pleasant Hill Lake where 25 to 35 mph curves are common, and be mindful of Amish horse-and-buggy traffic on roads east toward Holmes County, especially at dusk. Winter can bring snow squalls and slick spots between November and March. Pro tip: stick to daylight driving on your first day so you can settle into the rig before tackling the scenic backroads.
transportation.ohio.gov/What hookups and amenities will I find at Lexington-area campgrounds?
You will have great options for where to park an RV in Lexington. Most full-service parks like Butler/Mohican KOA and Mohican Adventures offer full hookups with 50/30-amp electric, water, and sewer at the site, while Ohio State Park campgrounds at Mohican and Malabar Farm typically provide electric sites with centralized dump stations and potable water fill-ups. Charles Mill Lake Park has electric sites plus a dump station near the main entrance. Pro tip: if your host's RV does not include a sewer hose long enough for state-park pedestal layouts, ask them to add a 20-foot hose before pickup.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/mohican-state-parkWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Lexington?
You'll be surprised how loaded these rigs are. Most RVs available for rent an RV in Lexington come stocked with a queen or king bed, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with both furnace and air conditioning, dinette and sofa seating that converts to extra beds, and seatbelted travel seats. Many include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, awning, and an onboard generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi hotspots are a common add-on. Travel trailers and Class C motorhomes typically sleep 4 to 8, making them perfect for a family RV trip Lexington parents plan around Mid-Ohio race weekends or Mohican adventures.
nhtsa.gov/What add-ons and pickup options should I look for?
The fun extras can transform your trip. Common add-ons on a Lexington RV rental include linen and kitchen packages, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, portable grills, bike racks, generators, Wi-Fi hotspots, and stocked propane tanks. Many hosts offer Instant Book so you can lock in dates immediately, and most allow flexible pickup windows so you can grab the rig Friday afternoon and return Sunday evening. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night with paid upgrades available. Pro tip: if you are watching or racing at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, ask about a delivery-and-setup package so the rig is waiting trackside when you arrive.
rvezy.com/How do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple, secure, and handled entirely through RVezy, so you never hand cash to a host. When you book your Lexington RV rental, you pay the rental total through the platform with a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is placed separately as an authorization hold on your card, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV, and is released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good condition. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos at pickup and return, and notify your card issuer before booking so the deposit hold goes through without flags.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Lexington during winter?
Yes, winter rentals are absolutely doable, and Ohio's cold-weather adventures are underrated. A handful of Lexington-area RVezy hosts list four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, electric fireplaces, and propane furnaces that hold up well into the 20s F. You'll want a campground with shore power hookups (Charles Mill Lake Park and Butler/Mohican KOA stay open into late fall, and some private parks operate year-round). Snow tubing at Snow Trails just outside Mansfield is a 15-minute drive and pairs perfectly with a cozy RV basecamp. Pro tip: ask your host for a heated water hose and a skirt, and plan to dump tanks more often in freezing weather to keep lines clear.
