Campgrounds near Loudonville, Ohio
Loudonville sits in north-central Ohio at the edge of Mohican Country, a compact recreation zone built around the Clear Fork and Black Fork rivers that join to form the Mohican River. The village is widely known as the Canoe Capital of Ohio thanks to the Mohican River and its long-running livery scene. The concentration of paddling outfitters, private campgrounds, and public land within a short drive makes it a practical base for RV travelers.
The anchor for the area is Mohican State Park, a 1,110-acre state park adjacent to a 4,525-acre state forest, located south of Loudonville. Just outside the park boundary, private options like Mohican Adventures Campground and Cabins, River Run Family Campground, and The Lost Horizons Family Campground offer a mix of full-hookup RV sites, tent areas, and cabins.
Most private campgrounds cluster along State Route 3 and Wally Road, close to canoe liveries and river access points. That keeps drive times short between the campsite, the river, and downtown Loudonville.
Things to do around Loudonville
Paddling is the signature activity. The Mohican River corridor between Loudonville and Greer supports a dense cluster of canoe, kayak, raft, and tube liveries, and Mohican Adventures Campground and Cabins runs on-site river trips along with an aerial adventure park, mini golf, and go-karts.
On land, the 1,110-acre state park and adjacent 4,525-acre state forest offer opportunities to explore the Clear Fork Gorge, hemlock forest, and Mohican River. Trails wind through the gorge and hemlock stands, and Pleasant Hill Lake, north of the park, opens up boating and fishing. Winter brings cross-country skiing and snow tubing at nearby ski areas, while hiking remains available year-round in the state park and forest.

Peak season runs late spring through early fall. Canoe liveries and the lake marina are typically open April through October, so trips built around river time should land inside that window. July and August bring the warmest water and the busiest campgrounds; weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill earliest.
Spring and early fall are quieter and cooler, with better hiking conditions and fewer bugs. May is the wettest month in Loudonville, with rain falling on roughly 17 days, which can raise river levels and occasionally suspend livery trips, so paddlers should check river conditions before driving in.
Winter access is limited but not closed. The Mohican State Park campground is open year round, though water service at full-hookup sites is typically shut off from mid-November through March. Some private campgrounds close entirely between late October and April, so confirm dates before booking a shoulder-season trip.
How to book a campsite
Public sites at Mohican State Park are handled through Ohio State Parks. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 6 months in advance. Cabins may be reserved up to one year in advance, online or by calling (866) 644-6727. Summer weekends and holidays commonly sell out within days of the booking window opening.
Private campgrounds each run their own systems. Mohican Adventures Campground and Cabins takes reservations directly through its website, with cancellation fees that increase inside the week before arrival. The Lost Horizons Family Campground and River Run Family Campground also handle bookings directly; call ahead about big-rig length limits and hookup availability.
What to expect on-site
Mohican State Park's large campground offers full hook-up, electric, and non-electric sites, all with a picnic table and a fire ring, and up to two pets are allowed on each site. There are 100 electric, 51 full hook-up, and 33 non-electric sites, with some non-electric sites located along the river. Amenities include showers, flush toilets, a dump station, a campground store, and a swimming pool open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Private campgrounds in the area typically add pools, camp stores, and organized weekend activities aimed at families. Cell service is spotty in the river valley, so download maps before arrival. For the safety of registered campers, visitors are not permitted to drive through the state park campground from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
