Campgrounds and RV parks near Malta, OH

The Muskingum River is the region's central attraction. The 10 hand-operated locks, designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 2001, remain in seasonal use for recreational boats and are free to lock through. Anglers target largemouth and smallmouth bass, saugeye, catfish, and crappie from boats and lock areas, though fishing from the lock walls themselves is prohibited. Jesse Owens State Park has miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails, youth fishing ponds, and an archery range on reclaimed AEP mining land. Burr Oak State Park surrounds a 664-acre lake with a 10-horsepower limit, a sandy swimming beach, an 18-hole disc golf course, and roughly 28 miles of trails, including a long section of the statewide Buckeye Trail. Families commonly pair a stay with a visit to The Wilds, a large open-air conservation center southeast of Zanesville that runs safari tours in the warmer months.

Peak camping in this part of Ohio runs late May through early September. Burr Oak's main campground and the Muskingum River locks see their heaviest use around holiday weekends, and reservable sites on ReserveOhio often fill weeks ahead for summer Fridays and Saturdays. Summers are warm and humid, with July highs in the mid-80s and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Spring brings wildflowers, active fishing, and green ridges, though rain is common and river levels on the Muskingum can rise quickly after storms. Fall is a strong shoulder season: the hardwood forests of oak, hickory, and maple produce vivid color from mid-October, and both bugs and crowds drop off sharply. Winter is cold and often overcast, with snow and freezing rain possible through the season. Jesse Owens' primitive campgrounds operate seasonally, generally April 1 to mid-December, while Burr Oak's main campground stays open year-round with reduced off-peak water service from November 1 through April at the shower house.

Terrain here is rolling Appalachian foothills, so expect winding two-lane approaches, occasional low tree branches on river roads, and gravel or grass sites that may need leveling blocks. Big rigs can be accommodated at Stockport RV Park and at select sites within Burr Oak, but tight turns and narrow entrances are common at the primitive locations. Cell service is uneven across the area. Verizon and AT&T are usable in and around McConnelsville and Stockport but drop off inside the wooded state park loops. Plan to download maps and reservations before arrival. The Jesse Owens sites are truly primitive: pit toilets, no potable water, no electric, and no camp store. Burr Oak's main campground offers showers, flush toilets, and a dump station. Groceries, fuel, and propane are available in McConnelsville, and Zanesville has larger supermarkets and RV services within about a 40-minute drive.
