Campgrounds near Malvern, Ohio
Malvern sits in Carroll County in northeast Ohio, roughly 20 miles southeast of Canton and within easy reach of the Muskingum Watershed lake system. The area is rural and rolling, with reservoirs, farmland, and small towns forming the backdrop for most trips. For RV travelers, this puts a mix of full-hookup private parks and large lakefront public campgrounds inside a 30-minute drive.
Atwood Lake Park Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist is the anchor destination to the south, with more than 600 sites on a 1,540-acre lake. Petersburg Marina Muskingum Conservancy District sits on the same watershed system for boat-focused stays. Private options closer to town include Pride Valley Campgrounds, Big Arb's Campground, and Carrollton KOA Holiday, which runs a mid-April to mid-October season with pull-thrus, cabins, and a pool.
Canton, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Amish Country to the west, and Historic Zoar Village are all reachable as day trips from a Malvern base.
Things to do near Malvern
Water recreation drives most itineraries. Atwood Lake enforces a 25-horsepower limit, making it a calm setting for sailing, pontoons, kayaks, and fishing, and the park adds a swimming beach, an inflatable water feature for kids, and lakeside food. Common catches include northern pike, channel catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass. Nearby Leesville Lake, about 10 miles south, holds a lower horsepower limit and is known as one of Ohio's top muskie lakes.
On land, Atwood Lake Park has miles of hiking trails, and the broader region carries a segment of the Buckeye Trail. Day trips work well: the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Historic Zoar Village, and Holmes County Amish shops and bakeries are all inside an hour. Carrollton itself offers small-town shops and local bakeries for a quieter afternoon.

MWCD seasonal camping permits at Atwood run from April 1 through October 31. Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends are the busiest periods, and holiday cancellation windows are stricter than on standard weekends.
Summer is warm and humid, with average highs in the low 80s and afternoon thunderstorms common in June and July. Fall brings cooler nights, drier days, and strong foliage color through October, and it is often the most comfortable stretch for RV travel. Spring is on the wetter side and can bring lingering snow into March.
Winter camping options are limited around Malvern. Vacation cabins at Atwood Lake Park are heated and air-conditioned for year-round use, but most tent and RV sites shut down or run reduced services from November through March.

How to book
Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District properties, including Atwood Lake Park and Petersburg Marina, are booked through the MWCD reservation system at reserve.mwcd.org. All reservations must be made at least 48 hours before the start of the stay. Discounts are available for seniors 60 and older, veterans, and active-duty military with valid ID.
Carrollton KOA Holiday books through the KOA website or by phone and follows standard KOA cancellation rules, with a stricter notice requirement on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends. Smaller private parks like Pride Valley Campgrounds and Big Arb's Campground typically take reservations by phone. Book summer holiday weekends and lakefront full-hookup sites several months out.
What to expect on-site
Expect a mix of amenity levels. Atwood Lake Park's Area H offers 142 50-amp full hook-up sites, seven of which are ADA-accessible, along with shared restrooms and showers, a playground, a picnic shelter, and docks. Older loops range from waterfront to wooded and are typically electric-only with water spigots and dump stations rather than in-site sewer. The park has a camp store and free Wi-Fi throughout, and a daily gate admission applies in addition to site fees.
Carrollton KOA Holiday has around 150 sites with full hookups, 20/30/50-amp service, pull-thrus that accept big rigs up to 90 feet, a pool, and cabins. Cell coverage is generally adequate but uneven in the more wooded lake loops, and firewood is sold on-site at the larger parks.
