Campgrounds near Martins Ferry, Ohio
Martins Ferry sits on the Ohio River in Belmont County, directly across from Wheeling, West Virginia. The area serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the northern Appalachian foothills, with campgrounds on both sides of the river within a short drive of town.
The closest private options include Big Gs RV Campground and Ernies Acres Campground. Just across the river in Marshall County, West Virginia, Grand Vue Park is a resort-style campground offering sweeping views of the Ohio Valley from its elevated position in Marshall County. Hotel RV West Alexander lies east along the I-70 corridor in Pennsylvania, useful for travelers routing through the region.
For a state-park experience, Barkcamp State Park is a public recreation area in Belmont County, Ohio, near the village of Belmont, with the 1,005-acre park centered on 117-acre Belmont Lake. It is roughly a half-hour drive southwest of Martins Ferry and remains the primary public campground in the immediate area, giving travelers a mix of private full-hookup parks and public forested sites within easy reach.
Things to do near Martins Ferry
Water and trail recreation anchor most trips. At Barkcamp State Park, a 700-foot beach provides enjoyment for swimmers and sunbathers, boats with electric motors only are permitted on Belmont Lake, seasonal boat tie-ups are available, and a launch ramp provides access to the lake. The park also offers volleyball and basketball courts, horseshoe pits, an archery range, hiking trails, and an 18-hole miniature golf course, and equestrian trails wind through the forested hills.
Across the river, Grand Vue Park overlooks the Ohio Valley. Just outside the RV campground it offers a restaurant, ice cream shop and camp store, zip line, three disc golf courses, mini golf and a huge heated swimming pool, available to campers who stay three days or more.
Nearby Wheeling adds riverfront parks, the Grave Creek Mound at Moundsville, and the historic West Virginia Penitentiary for day-trip variety.

The core RV season runs April through October. Grand Vue Park is open April 1 to October 31, and from December 1 to April 1 only one bathhouse is available and a limited number of sites are open for rental. Plan around that shoulder when routing shoulder-season trips through the northern panhandle.
Barkcamp operates year-round for camping, but amenities shift with the calendar. From November 1 to April 1, the showerhouse and dump stations are available, water is at the office building and shower house, and B Loop is closed. Cold-weather stays are viable for self-contained rigs.
Summer brings the fullest event schedule and the warmest lake conditions. Fall delivers hardwood color across the Belmont County hills through October, and Barkcamp hosts a September Cast-iron Cooking Festival with a competition, potluck and live music, and an October Fall Festival that includes a hay wagon ride, pumpkin carving, and art and food vendors.
How to book campgrounds near Martins Ferry
Barkcamp State Park uses the state reservation system. Reservations are available online at reserveohio.com or through the reservation call center at (866) 644-6727, starting 6 months prior to the desired arrival date for campsites. Parks that use the reservation system no longer offer walk-in campsites, with Jesse Owens State Park the only exception, so plan ahead for summer weekends.
Grand Vue Park takes reservations through its own website and the CampLife platform. The park has 40 full hook-up sites that include both 30 and 50-amp electric service, sewage, and water, with all back-in spaces at 50 feet for the RV except Site 23, which is 38 feet. Big Gs RV Campground, Ernies Acres Campground and Hotel RV West Alexander are private parks; contact each directly to confirm rig length, hookups and pet rules before arrival.
What to expect
Terrain is hilly and wooded. Roads into hilltop parks like Grand Vue climb steadily but stay paved and manageable for larger rigs; the drive up is easy even for big rigs. Cellular coverage is generally reliable near Martins Ferry, Wheeling and the I-70 corridor, and weaker in the hollows around Barkcamp.
At Barkcamp, the campground offers 150 electrified sites in sunny and shaded areas with hot showers, tables, fire rings, two wheelchair accessible sites and a dump station, and 15 sites add water and sewer hookups, with a max RV length of 35 feet. Grand Vue's 40 full-hookup sites sit on gravel pads that are reasonably level, accessed through a gated entrance using a code system.
Pets are allowed at both parks in designated areas. Expect humid summers, cool nights in the hills, and quick weather changes in spring and fall.

Yes, cross-state travel is normal and expected. Martins Ferry sits right on the West Virginia border, so a quick hop across the Ohio River into Wheeling or south to Coopers Rock State Forest is standard. Most hosts are also happy with longer interstate trips into Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh is about 60 miles), Maryland, or further. Travel into Canada may be allowed by some hosts, but you'll need to confirm directly with them and review insurance coverage before booking. Ohio gas prices tend to run slightly below the national average, and you'll find affordable fuel right in Martins Ferry along Hanover Street or just across the bridge in Wheeling. A quick rule of thumb: for a 200-mile weekend loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $75-$90 in fuel. Pro tip: gas stations along US-250 in Ohio are typically cheaper than the ones right off I-70 exits.

Ohio State Parks use the ReserveOhio system (reserveohio.com), which opens reservations up to 6 months out, snag your spot the moment that window opens. For weekday or shoulder-season trips, you can often book just a week or two ahead. Private parks like Ohio Valley RV Park in Martins Ferry typically have more flexibility and can sometimes accommodate last-minute stays. Avoid narrow downtown Wheeling streets and watch clearance on the older bridges crossing the Ohio River. In winter, lake-effect snow and ice can hit hard, so most renters stick to April through October. Pro tip: if you're nervous about hills, ask your host for delivery, they'll handle the tricky driving for you.

To avoid any issues, take a quick walkaround photo set at pickup and drop-off, follow the host's fuel and tank policies, and stay within your mileage allowance. Pro tip: keep all communication with your host inside the RVezy app so everything is documented if questions ever come up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Martins Ferry during winter?
Yes, winter RV rentals in Martins Ferry are absolutely possible and can be a magical, quiet experience, just plan smart. Many hosts offer four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable furnaces that handle the Ohio Valley's January lows (around 21°F) just fine. Barkcamp State Park stays open year-round with limited services, making it a great cold-weather base, and many travelers love the snowy hardwood forests and frozen lake views. Look for listings tagged as winter-ready and confirm with the host that the furnace, heat tape, and propane systems are prepped. Pro tip: book a site with electric hookups (shore power) so you can run a small space heater and save propane for overnight backup.
