Campgrounds and RV parks near McConnelsville, OH

Fishing is the headline activity. Ponds across Jesse Owens State Park and the surrounding ReCreation Land are stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, red-ear sunfish, and channel catfish, and the Muskingum River holds all three species of black bass, saugeye, and various catfish. A valid Ohio fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. Paddlers and small-boat operators have plenty of water. Lakes inside Jesse Owens State Park have a 9.9-horsepower limit, while the Muskingum River permits unlimited-horsepower motors and hosts houseboats, pontoon boats, canoes, and kayaks. Public launch ramps are provided at Locks 4, 5, 6, and 11. On land, the AEP ReCreation Land carries a segment of the Buckeye Trail. The Miner's Memorial Park along State Route 78 displays the Big Muskie Bucket, the largest dragline bucket ever built.

The practical camping season in southeast Ohio runs roughly April through October, with shoulder-month conditions extending from mid-March into December. Jesse Owens State Park operates four no-fee campgrounds; most sites stay open year-round, but the Sand Hollow camping area closes for the winter season. Muskingum River State Park's Ellis Lock 11 campground closes from November 1 to March 31 each year. Spring brings the wettest conditions and river levels can rise quickly. Boaters planning to transit the Muskingum locks should contact the park office to check on river and lock conditions before departure, as individual locks are occasionally closed for repair. Summer is peak season for fishing, paddling, and lock traffic on the Muskingum. Fall delivers strong hardwood color across the reclaimed hills along with lower humidity. Winter camping is possible at open sites but facilities are minimal, latrines are the norm, and water systems at primitive campgrounds are typically shut off. Deer, turkey, and small-game hunting seasons overlap with fall camping on the ReCreation Land, so wearing blaze orange is wise.

Most public campgrounds in this area are primitive. Expect vault toilets or latrines, picnic tables, and fire rings, but no showers and no RV dump stations at the state park and AEP sites. Hook Lake, Sawmill Road, Luke Chute Lock 5, and Bicentennial have no electric hookups, and potable water is inconsistent, so arriving with full fresh-water tanks is wise. Cell service is spotty across the ReCreation Land and along the lower Muskingum River corridor. Downloading offline maps before leaving McConnelsville is helpful, since campgrounds are spread across gravel back roads. Stockport RV Park is the closest option with full hookups, offering 21 sites with 30-amp electric, water, sewer, showers, and laundry, and accepting rigs up to 40 feet. It suits travelers who want a serviced base for day trips into the primitive areas.
