Camping near McKinley Heights, Ohio
McKinley Heights is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Weathersfield Township, Trumbull County, Ohio, sitting inside the Youngstown-Warren metro area near the intersection of U.S. Route 422 and Ohio State Route 169. For RV travelers, that puts the community within easy reach of a mix of Ohio State Park camping and private family-run parks scattered across Trumbull and Mahoning counties.
The anchor destination for the area is Mosquito Lake State Park, roughly a half-hour drive north near Cortland. The park sits on the shores of Ohio's third-largest inland lake and offers 234 campsites, including 218 with electric hookups (a share of which provide full water, electric, and sewer service) plus 16 non-electric sites and walk-in tent options.
Private options in the immediate area include Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground and Hubbards Haven Family Campground in nearby Hubbard, plus Paradise Lakes Campground and Paradise Lakes Family Campground in Bristolville. Together they cover the full range from lakeside state-park sites to full-hookup RV parks with pools and family activities.
Things to do near McKinley Heights
Water recreation is the main draw. At Mosquito Lake State Park, five boat ramps provide lake access, a marina offers fuel and boat rentals, and a 600-foot sandy beach is open for swimming in summer. The lake is known for walleye, bass, crappie, and northern pike fishing, and paddlers can launch kayaks and canoes near the campground.
On land, the state park includes an 18-hole disc golf course, archery range, volleyball and basketball courts, horseshoes, and playgrounds, plus a 5-acre dog park with separate areas for small and large dogs and direct lake access for swimming. Miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails run through the park.
Private parks add family-focused amenities: Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground has a swim lake, fishing pond, and game room, while Paradise Lakes Campground features multiple on-site lakes, mini golf, and outdoor gaming courts.

The Youngstown-Warren area has a four-season humid continental climate with cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers. The primary RV camping season runs from late April through October, when facilities are fully open and lake activities are in full swing.
Mosquito Lake State Park Campground is technically open year-round, but service levels change sharply with the calendar. Full amenities including showerhouses are available April 1 through October 31, while winter camping from November 1 through March 31 operates with reduced services: showerhouses closed, pit latrines available, and no potable water at full-service sites. Plan accordingly if traveling in the shoulder or off-season.
Summer weekends and holidays draw heavy demand, especially Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Private parks like Chestnut Ridge typically open in spring and close in fall, while Hubbards Haven is one of the few local options offering winter camping sites with a minimum stay of one month. Fall brings cooler nights, foliage, and quieter sites.

We had the most amazing trip and lived in luxury renting from Starla! We had EVERYTHING we needed from clean beds, blankets, kitchen supplies, utensils, towels, and even awesome movie sections for our kids to watch at night. We were celebrating our son’s bday and she even put a little treat in the fridge for him. It was so sweet and he loved it. I am looking forward to renting again in the future! Who would’ve thought camping could ever be so easy and relaxing?!?! I cannot thank you enough Starla for the amazing trip we had!! 💕

How to book campgrounds near McKinley Heights
Mosquito Lake State Park uses Ohio's central state park reservation system. Campsite reservations are made via reserveohio.com up to six months in advance of arrival, and the same system is accessible by phone through the Ohio State Parks reservation call center. Popular lakefront and full-service sites for summer weekends tend to book out soon after the six-month window opens, so set a reminder and book early.
Private campgrounds handle reservations directly. Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground, Hubbards Haven Family Campground, Paradise Lakes Campground, and Paradise Lakes Family Campground all accept bookings by phone or through their own websites, and some also list availability on third-party booking platforms. For holiday weekends, contact private parks several months out.
Check length-of-stay minimums, pet rules, and RV length limits before booking, since these vary site by site.
What to expect camping near McKinley Heights
At Mosquito Lake State Park, expect a large, wooded state-park campground with a mix of hookup levels and lake or woodland settings. Quiet hours run from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM, maximum RV length is around 45 feet, and standard Ohio State Park rules apply, including a 14-day stay limit within any 30-day period. Pets are welcome on designated sites and must be leashed and attended. Bring bug spray: this is Mosquito Lake, and the marshland lives up to the name in summer.
Private parks in the area lean toward family-oriented amenities: heated pools, playgrounds, game rooms, and pavilions. Sites at older parks can be tight or unlevel, so pack extra leveling blocks. Cell coverage is generally reliable across Trumbull County, and grocery, fuel, and RV supply stops are available in Warren, Niles, and Hubbard.
