Campgrounds and RV parks near Montpelier, OH

Water recreation drives most trips. Harrison Lake State Park has a swimming beach, a separate dog swim area, kayak and canoe rentals, and a hiking trail that loops the lake through woods and open shoreline. The lake is stocked for fishing with species including bluegill, channel catfish, white crappie, largemouth bass, and bullhead, and an Ohio fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. Families staying at Sauder Village Campground can walk to the historic village, which features roughly 40 buildings interpreting Ohio life from 1803 to the 1920s, plus costumed craftspeople, a bakery, and a restaurant. The campground itself adds a splash pad, an indoor pool, and a hot tub through the on-site inn. Beyond the campgrounds, the St. Joseph River corridor supports paddling and shore fishing, and small towns in Williams and Fulton counties add farm markets, diners, and antique shops for rainy-day plans.

The main camping window in northwest Ohio runs from April through October. Sauder Village Campground operates its regular season from early April to early November, and Harrison Lake State Park rents its yurts and camper cabins May through October. Most private parks in the area follow a similar spring-to-fall pattern. Summer is the peak family season. July is the warmest month, with average highs near 80°F, and holiday weekends fill quickly. Sauder Village enforces a three-night minimum on holiday weekends with full payment taken at booking, so plan around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day well in advance. Spring brings the wettest stretch of the camping season, with muddy site conditions possible after storms. Fall is quieter, with cool nights, changing foliage in October, and easier same-week reservations. Winter camping in the region is limited: Harrison Lake State Park stays open year-round for a small number of sites, but most private campgrounds close for the season, and services such as showers are reduced or unavailable.

Sites in the area lean toward level, gravel or asphalt pads with electric service. Sauder Village Campground has 87 sites in total, including 55 full-hookup back-ins, 11 electric/water back-ins, and 11 electric-only pull-throughs suited to larger rigs, plus a laundry, bathhouse, and Wi-Fi. Harrison Lake State Park splits its sites between two campgrounds. The North Campground holds 126 electric sites with flush toilets, hot showers, laundry, and a dump station; the South Campground has 59 sites, 26 of them electric, with vault toilets and closer lake access through the trees. Most electric sites accommodate RVs up to about 68 feet, though interior loops can be tight for the largest rigs. Expect an active family atmosphere on summer weekends, with kids on bikes, playgrounds in use, and clean shower houses. Cell coverage is generally usable across the region.
