Mount Gilead camping overview
Mount Gilead sits in Morrow County in central Ohio, about an hour north of Columbus and roughly midway between Columbus and Mansfield. The village is small and rural, but it works well as an RV base because I-71 runs just east of town, making the campgrounds here easy to reach from Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Dayton.
The closest public option is Mt Gilead State Park, a 181-acre park in Morrow County about an hour north of Columbus, with a campground that operates year-round. The 13.5-acre Mt. Gilead Lake allows paddlecraft and sailboats and boats with electric motors only. Private campgrounds fill in the rest of the map. Mt. Gilead KOA Holiday sits near the state park, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Columbus North is a short drive away. River Bend Family Campground and Cardinal Center Campground round out the local choices.
The area suits families and big-rig travelers. State park sites are wooded and compact, while the private parks lean toward pull-through, full-hookup layouts and heavier on-site amenities.
Things to do around Mount Gilead
Most trips center on the state park. The 13.5-acre Mt. Gilead Lake allows paddlecraft and sailboats and boats with electric motors only, and the lake offers fishing for bass, bluegill and other panfish. An 18-hole disc golf course may be enjoyed by visitors in day-use areas of the park, along with hiking trails and a playground.
For family-focused resort days without leaving camp, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Columbus North sits on wooded acreage in Mount Gilead with full-hookup RV sites and cabins, and runs pool and water-play features during the warm-weather season. Mt. Gilead KOA Holiday adds a pool, driving range, and stocked fishing ponds. Cardinal Center Campground pairs camping with a shooting sports facility. Columbus attractions, including COSI and Easton Town Center, are within an hour's drive.

Peak camping season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when the private resorts run full activity schedules and Jellystone's pool and water features are open. Summer sites at Mt Gilead State Park, the KOA, and Jellystone book up several weeks ahead on holiday weekends. Weekday arrivals are far easier.
Spring and fall are quieter. Spring can be muddy and wet: the month with the most rainfall in Mount Gilead is May, when rain falls for 19.7 days and typically aggregates up to 3.9 inches of precipitation. Fall brings cooler nights and color through the surrounding hardwoods, and September is the month with the least rainfall, with rain falling on 15.4 days and accumulating about 2.05 inches.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Mt Gilead State Park is open year-round with reservations required via reserveohio.com or by calling 866-644-6727, and an off-peak season that runs November 7 through May 1 with reduced rates; full hookup sites do not have water at the site during winter months. Most private parks in the area operate on a warm-weather schedule and shut down or run limited services from late fall through early spring.

How to book campgrounds near Mount Gilead
Mt Gilead State Park is reserved through Ohio's state park system. Reservations are required and can be made online or by calling (866) 644-6727, with a booking window of six months in advance. The campground is small, so summer weekends fill early; a cancellation-alert service can help catch openings.
Private parks each use their own systems. Mt. Gilead KOA Holiday books through koa.com or by phone. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Columbus North uses its own site at columbusjellystone.com. Cardinal Center Campground and River Bend Family Campground take reservations directly by phone or website.
For holiday weekends and Cardinal Center shoot events, book two to three months ahead. Verify RV length limits before confirming: the state park campground accommodates RVs up to 40 feet, while the KOA and Cardinal Center handle bigger rigs more easily.
What to expect on-site
Expect a mix of styles. Mt Gilead State Park operates year-round with 59 sites: 22 full hookup sites offering water, electric, and sewer connections, and 37 electric-only sites providing 30 and 50-amp service; two camper cabins and primitive Rent-A-Camp sites with furnished tents are also available. Each campsite comes equipped with a fire ring and picnic table, and facilities include a modern shower house with flush toilets, a camp store, and a dump station. The setting is wooded and quiet, and reviewers regularly note clean shower houses. Larger rigs may find some interior sites tight.
The private parks are more open. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Columbus North offers full-hookup RV sites and camping cabins and leans heavily on resort amenities and structured kids' programming. Mt. Gilead KOA Holiday has big-rig-friendly pull-throughs with 20/30/50-amp service, and Cardinal Center offers full-hookup RV sites plus cabins.

One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there.
