Camping near Nelsonville, Ohio
Nelsonville sits in Athens County in the foothills of the Appalachian Plateau, bordered by the Wayne National Forest and within a short drive of the Hocking Hills region. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers who want quick access to sandstone gorges, recess caves, and forested lakes without staying inside the busier core of Logan or Athens.
The surrounding area offers a mix of public and private campgrounds. Ohio State Parks operate large public options at Lake Hope and Burr Oak, both within roughly 30 to 45 minutes of Nelsonville. Private parks fill in the gaps with family-oriented amenities and off-road access. Hocking Hills Jellystone Park caters to families with pool and resort amenities, Begleys ATV Campground draws off-road riders heading to nearby trail systems, and Under The Stars Campground offers a quieter wooded setting. Burr Oak Family Resort rounds out the closer choices for travelers who want full hookups near the lake. Sites in the region range from primitive walk-ins to full-hookup pads suitable for larger Class A rigs.
Things to do around Nelsonville
Most trips center on the Hocking Hills trail system. Ash Cave, Old Man's Cave, Cedar Falls, Conkle's Hollow, Rock House, Cantwell Cliffs, and Whispering Cave are the seven main hiking areas, all open from dawn to dusk year round. Lake Hope offers a small lake with seasonal rentals for canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and pedal boats in warmer months, plus swimming and fishing. Burr Oak Lake adds quieter paddling and a long shoreline trail. The Wayne National Forest contains roughly 145 miles of OHV trails across four systems including Monday Creek and Dorr Run, which is why Begleys ATV Campground draws riders. Families staying at Hocking Hills Jellystone Park typically use the on-site pool and themed weekend events between trail days. Nelsonville itself has the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway and a walkable historic Public Square.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through late October, with the heaviest pressure on weekends in June, July, and the fall color window in mid to late October. State park sites in the region routinely sell out months ahead for those dates, and reservations open six months in advance through the state system.
Spring brings the highest water in the waterfalls and consistent rainfall, with May the wettest month of the year. Trails near Old Man's Cave and Cedar Falls can be slick on the sandstone, and low spots in private campgrounds along the Hocking River are prone to flooding after prolonged rain.
Summer is warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms common. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall. Winter camping is possible at some area parks, with limited electric sites kept open year round, though many private campgrounds including Hocking Hills Jellystone Park, Under The Stars Campground, and Begleys ATV Campground close or reduce operations from November through March, and snow and ice can affect access roads.

First off, let me start by saying Jared is considered by my family as a Super Host. I’ve never been camping before, and this was our first experience and he showed us everything that was need to be done with The RV. He took his time with us and he was very pleasant and he made us feel so comfortable. I really appreciate him and his wife & warm, welcome they gave us. Everything was wonderful. The weather kinda didn’t cooperate, but that is another story. We had a wonderful time the wife and I enjoying Camping life. We look forward to doing this again and if anybody ever thinks about renting a RV from this wonderful family, 5 stars + across the board we really had a wonderful time at Mohican State Park in Ohio Thank You so much for..

How to book a site
Ohio State Parks use a single reservation system at reserveohio.com, also reachable by phone at 1-866-644-6727. Lake Hope and Burr Oak both book through this system, and campsites open for reservation up to six months in advance of the arrival date. Walk-ins are not accepted at the most popular state park campgrounds, so a confirmed booking is recommended before arrival. Private campgrounds including Hocking Hills Jellystone Park, Burr Oak Family Resort, Under The Stars Campground, and Begleys ATV Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and many require a deposit for holiday and festival weekends. For fall color weekends, booking several months ahead is realistic for state sites and even longer for full-hookup pads at the most popular private parks.
What to expect on arrival
State park campgrounds in the area generally offer paved pads, heated showerhouses, flush toilets, laundry, dump stations, and camp stores. Sites are typically sized for rigs up to 50 feet, with a mix of full-hookup, electric, and non-electric options across the region. Private campgrounds like Hocking Hills Jellystone Park and Burr Oak Family Resort lean toward full-hookup pads and family amenities, while Begleys ATV Campground and Under The Stars Campground keep things simpler. Cell coverage is uneven across the region's hollows and ridges, so downloading maps before arrival is a good idea. Bring leveling blocks, as many sites in southeast Ohio are cut into hillsides. Firewood is sold on site at most parks to limit the spread of invasive pests, and outside wood is generally discouraged.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Nelsonville, OH
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Nelsonville, OH?
RV rental in Nelsonville is one of the best vacation values in southeast Ohio, with most travel trailers starting around $95 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes typically running $175 to $275 per night, and luxury Class A rigs reaching $300 or more during peak Hocking Hills season. Because hosts set their own pricing on RVezy, you can browse the listings for cheap RV rental Nelsonville options like older travel trailers that still come with full kitchens and bathrooms. The smart-money move is booking midweek in May or late September, when fall foliage hasn't peaked yet and rates can drop 20 to 30 percent. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book to lock in popular Hocking Hills weekends before they sell out.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Nelsonville%2C%20OhioDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Nelsonville?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Nelsonville and drive anywhere in Ohio. The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles does not require a Commercial Driver's License for recreational vehicles used for personal travel, so whether you're picking up a campervan or a 32-foot Class C motorhome, your standard license works just fine. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit along with your home license. Most first-time renters are surprised by how simple it is to get on the road toward Hocking Hills.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat kind of protection comes with my Nelsonville RV rental?
Every RV rental in Nelsonville booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the trails toward Old Man's Cave with real peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your level of coverage during checkout (not the host) so you can pick the option that fits your comfort level and budget. It provides meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens on the winding roads through Hocking Hills. Pro tip: review the coverage options before you book so you can budget the full trip cost and head out feeling fully prepared.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Nelsonville RV trip?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and there's a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates with confidence. If your plans change because of weather, a work conflict, or one of the unpredictable spring storms southeast Ohio is known for, you'll have a clear cancellation framework based on how far out your trip start date is. For situations like natural disasters or major travel disruptions, RVezy's support team works directly with you on solutions. Pro tip: book early for fall foliage weekends (mid-October is peak in Hocking Hills) since those dates sell out fast, knowing your grace period has you covered.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip to Nelsonville?
Absolutely, the Hocking Hills region is a dream for dogs and their humans, and pet-friendly RV rental Nelsonville options are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see hosts who welcome four-legged guests, sometimes with a small pet fee. Hocking Hills State Park allows leashed pets on all of its hiking trails, including the famous Grandma Gatewood Trail from Old Man's Cave to Ash Cave, and Lake Hope State Park has dog-friendly camping loops too. Pro tip: pack a towel and a collapsible water bowl because trails like Conkle's Hollow get muddy after rain, and your pup will need a rinse before hopping back in the RV.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/hocking-hills-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Nelsonville?
Yes, RV delivery Nelsonville is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip the drive. Many hosts will deliver your motorhome or travel trailer directly to Hocking Hills State Park Campground, Lake Hope State Park, Hocking Hills Jellystone, or a private property in the Logan and Athens area, then set up the awning, level the rig, connect hookups, and walk you through every system. Filter for Delivery on the search page to see which hosts offer it and their delivery radius from Nelsonville. Pro tip: delivery makes a campervan rental Nelsonville trip feel like a luxury cabin stay, you just show up, unpack, and start hiking toward Cedar Falls.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Nelsonville%2C%20OhioHow many miles can I drive on my Nelsonville RV rental?
Plenty for an unforgettable Nelsonville RV trip. Most hosts include a daily mileage allowance (typically 100 to 150 free miles per day), and many offer RV rental with unlimited mileage as an upgrade or for longer bookings, so check each listing's mileage policy before you book. Nelsonville sits at the doorstep of Hocking Hills, so popular day trips like Old Man's Cave (15 miles), Lake Hope State Park (20 miles), Athens (15 miles), and Burr Oak State Park (25 miles) barely dent your allowance. Heading farther? Columbus is about 60 miles northwest and Cincinnati is around 150 miles. Pro tip: message the host before booking if you want to add miles upfront, it's usually cheaper than paying per-mile overage.
fs.usda.gov/r09/wayneWhere are the best campgrounds near Nelsonville to park an RV?
You've got incredible options for RV camping Nelsonville, all within a short drive. Hocking Hills State Park Campground in Logan (about 13 miles away) offers 156 electric sites and 47 full hookups with paved pads that fit rigs up to 50 feet. Hocking Hills Jellystone Park on State Route 278 has 92 family-friendly sites with a pool and laundry. Lake Hope State Park Campground (about 20 miles south) is a quieter, wooded alternative with lake access. Burr Oak Cove Campground in the Wayne National Forest offers a more rustic experience for $10 per night. Lake Snowden Campground at Hocking College is right in town and hosts the Nelsonville Music Festival. Pro tip: book Hocking Hills State Park 6 months ahead for summer weekends.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/hocking-hills-state-parkWhen is the best time to visit Nelsonville in an RV?
Honestly, Nelsonville is a four-season destination, but mid-September through late October is the sweet spot. Fall foliage in Hocking Hills is legendary, with sugar maples and oaks lighting up the gorges in red and gold, and daytime highs sit in the comfortable 55 to 70 degree Fahrenheit range. Spring (April to early June) brings wildflowers along Wildcat Hollow and 60 to 75 degree weather, perfect for hiking. Summer is lush and warm (80s, sometimes humid) and great for swimming at Lake Hope. Winter (lows in the 20s) sees ice formations at Ash Cave that are stunning if your motorhome rental Nelsonville is winterized. Pro tip: book the Nelsonville Music Festival weekend in early June for a one-of-a-kind small-town experience.
weather.gov/iln/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay on my first trip?
You'll do great, and the rolling hills around Nelsonville are actually a friendly place for a first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering driving, leveling, hookups, the generator, slide-outs, and dumping tanks. Take notes or record a video on your phone so you can rewatch later at the campground. State Route 33 from Columbus to Nelsonville is a four-lane divided highway that's easy for beginners, and you can avoid tight roads inside Hocking Hills State Park by parking at the campground and driving a tow car or rideshare to trailheads. Pro tip: pick a Class C or campervan for your first trip, they drive much more like a large van than a bus.
transportation.ohio.gov/What if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Take a breath, you're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat tire on State Route 56, a dead battery at Burr Oak, or a slide-out that won't retract, one phone call gets help dispatched to your location. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip if you need to troubleshoot or escalate anything. Your host is usually your fastest resource for quirky vehicle-specific questions and most respond within minutes. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's contact in your phone before leaving Nelsonville, and screenshot them in case cell service drops in the deeper Hocking Hills gorges.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are popular road trip routes from Nelsonville?
An RV road trip from Nelsonville opens up some of the Midwest's best scenery. The classic Hocking Hills loop hits Old Man's Cave, Cedar Falls, Ash Cave, and Conkle's Hollow in a 30-mile circuit. For longer adventures, drive 60 miles northwest to Columbus for city stops, 90 miles to Amish Country around Berlin and Millersburg, or follow the Ohio River Scenic Byway south to Marietta (about 75 miles) for riverboat history. Cross-state-line trips to Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh is around 200 miles east) and West Virginia's New River Gorge (about 180 miles southeast) are popular too. Travel into Mexico isn't allowed on RVezy rentals, but US road trips have you covered. Pro tip: message your host before crossing state lines just to confirm details.
transportation.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odot/How much should I budget for fuel on a Nelsonville RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables, but easy to plan. Ohio gas prices typically run about 10 to 20 cents below the US average, which is great news for your trip budget. Class B campervans get 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and big Class A rigs run 6 to 10 mpg. For a typical 3-day Hocking Hills loop covering 150 miles, a Class C might burn 15 to 18 gallons, around $50 to $65 at current Ohio prices. Fill up in Nelsonville or Logan where prices tend to be lower than at highway exits. Pro tip: choose a campervan rental Nelsonville for the best fuel economy, you'll save enough to splurge on dinner at Brewery 33 in Logan.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Nelsonville?
Earlier is better, especially for Hocking Hills State Park Campground, which is the most popular RV campground in Ohio and books up 6 months out for summer weekends and fall foliage. Reservations open on ReserveOhio.com, the official Ohio State Parks reservation system, exactly 6 months ahead at 8 a.m. Eastern. Lake Hope and Burr Oak State Park also book through ReserveOhio and fill quickly for holiday weekends. Private campgrounds like Hocking Hills Jellystone often have availability closer to your dates. Pro tip: if your top choice is full, set a notification alert through ReserveOhio's automatic email system, cancellations happen often and you can grab a freed-up site within minutes.
reserveohio.com/OhioCampWeb/What are driving conditions like around Nelsonville?
Driving around Nelsonville is genuinely scenic and very manageable for RVs. US Route 33 is a four-lane divided highway that connects Columbus straight to Nelsonville and Athens, perfect for larger rigs. Inside Hocking Hills, expect winding two-lane roads like State Route 664 and 374 with some steeper grades and sharp curves near Old Man's Cave, so take it slow and use lower gears on downhills. Spring and summer thunderstorms can be intense, and winter occasionally brings ice on shaded curves, so check Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) road conditions before heading out. Pro tip: avoid the narrow Covered Bridge Scenic Byway in the Wayne National Forest in a tall RV, some historic bridges have low clearances that won't accommodate larger rigs.
transportation.ohio.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Nelsonville?
Most established campgrounds near Nelsonville are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Hocking Hills State Park Campground offers full hookups (water, electric, sewer) at 47 sites, heated showers, flush toilets, a dump station, laundry, a camp store, and even a swimming pool for registered campers. Hocking Hills Jellystone adds a pool, hot tub, WiFi, and family activities. Lake Hope and Burr Oak have electric sites and shared dump stations. For freshwater fills and dumping mid-trip, the Hocking Hills State Park dump station is open to non-campers for a small fee. Pro tip: if you're heading into Wayne National Forest dispersed sites like Wildcat Hollow, dump and fill in town first because those primitive sites have no hookups.
fs.usda.gov/r09/wayne/recreation/camping-cabinsWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Nelsonville?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental Nelsonville comes fully outfitted with sleeping space for 4 to 8 (queen beds, bunks, or convertible dinettes), a kitchen with a fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower. Most rigs include air conditioning, a furnace for cool Appalachian nights, a TV, and onboard fresh, gray, and black water tanks. Many hosts include kitchen kits (plates, pots, utensils), bedding, and outdoor chairs as standard, while some offer extras like generators, WiFi hotspots, and bike racks. Every passenger needs a seatbelt while driving. Pro tip: message your host to confirm what's included so you only pack the personal items you actually need for your family RV trip Nelsonville.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Nelsonville%2C%20OhioWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect?
RVezy hosts in Nelsonville offer a flexible menu of add-ons to customize your trip. Popular extras include generator usage ($3 to $5 per hour), propane refills, linen and towel kits ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, kayaks, and pet cleaning fees if your dog joins. Pickup is typically at the host's home or a meeting point in or near Nelsonville, Logan, or Athens, and many hosts offer delivery to Hocking Hills State Park Campground or Lake Hope for a flat fee based on distance. Each listing shows mileage policy, generator hours, and any cleaning expectations. Pro tip: ask about a starter propane tank and a fully filled freshwater tank at pickup, a small request that saves you a stop on your way to the trails.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Nelsonville%2C%20OhioHow does the security deposit and payment work?
Payment is simple and secure through RVezy. You pay for your booking with a credit or debit card on the platform (never directly to the host), with the total split between rental cost, protection plan, fees, and any add-ons you select. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before the trip, and it's released back to you after a clean drop-off in Nelsonville. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround with your host at pickup, take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior, and return the RV at the agreed fuel and tank levels. Pro tip: keep all receipts for propane and dump fees in case you need to reference them post-trip.
