Campgrounds near New Franklin, Ohio
New Franklin sits in southern Summit County, wrapped around the Portage Lakes chain and just south of Akron. The city is the home of Portage Lakes State Park, a 411-acre public recreation area managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and centered on eight interconnected kettle lakes formed by glacial activity. That geography, water on nearly every side, plus easy access to I-77 and I-277, makes the area a practical base for RV travelers heading to Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Canton, or the wider northeast Ohio region.
RV renters have a mix of options within a short drive. Clays Park Resort North Jellystone, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Akron-Canton lead the family-oriented private resorts, while Caskeys Campground and Countryside Campground offer more traditional private-park stays. The state park campground on Manchester Road adds a quieter, lower-cost public option close to the water.
Most RV renters use New Franklin as a stationary base rather than a pass-through, taking day trips to Akron, Canton, and the Towpath Trail.
Things to do near New Franklin
The Portage Lakes themselves are the main draw. Boats with motors up to 400 horsepower are permitted on all lakes except Nimisila Reservoir, which is electric-motor only, and eight public launch ramps make it easy to get an RV-towed boat on the water. Turkeyfoot Lake has a public swimming beach with parking, drinking water, change booths, and restrooms, and Rex Lake and Cottage Grove Lake add smaller boater swim areas. Fishing for bass, crappie, and panfish is popular year-round.
On land, the state park offers 13 trails across three trailhead areas, an accessible archery range with block targets from 10 to 50 yards, and a stretch of the Buckeye Trail along the east shore of Nimisila Reservoir. The Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail runs west of New Franklin and connects north to Cuyahoga Valley National Park, roughly a 20-minute drive away. Families staying at the Jellystone resorts also get on-site pools, splash pads, and scheduled activities.

Peak camping season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Weekends in June, July, and August book up first, especially at the Jellystone properties and Clays Park Resort North Jellystone, which run family programming and draw regional traffic. Independence Day activity around Turkeyfoot Lake pulls larger crowds to the beach area, so travelers targeting that week should reserve well ahead and plan for traffic around the beach access points.
Shoulder seasons are a strong option for RV renters. May and September deliver milder days, lower humidity, and easier reservations, and October adds fall color along the Towpath Trail and in Cuyahoga Valley. Water-quality advisories at swim beaches are monitored by the Ohio Department of Health from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Winter is quiet. Some private campgrounds close or reduce services from late fall through March, while the state park stays open for ice fishing, ice skating, ice boating, and cross-country skiing when conditions allow. Winter RV renters should confirm hookup and service availability before booking.

How to book campgrounds near New Franklin
Portage Lakes State Park Campground is booked through the state system at reserveohio.com or by calling 866-644-6727. Campsite reservations open six months to the day before arrival, and no walk-in or self-registration camping is offered, so a reservation is required. Regular weekend stays require a two-night minimum, and Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends require three nights.
Private parks in the area, including Clays Park Resort North Jellystone, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Akron-Canton, Caskeys Campground, and Countryside Campground, run their own reservation systems on their websites and by phone. Holiday weekends and themed event weekends at the Jellystone resorts sell out months ahead, so RV renters should book those dates as soon as the calendar opens.
What to expect
The state park campground has 74 sites, with 68 non-electric and 6 electric, each with a picnic table and fire ring. Facilities are basic: pit latrines throughout the loop and a dump station for RVs, free for registered campers. Renters needing full hookups, showers, laundry, or long pull-throughs should target the private resorts instead.
Cell coverage is generally reliable across the New Franklin area, and grocery, fuel, and propane are within a short drive along Manchester Road and State Route 619. The Portage Lakes State Park entrance is at 5031 Manchester Road, reached from I-77 Exit 118.
Expect summer weekends to be busy on the water, with ski boats and personal watercraft active on the larger lakes. Nimisila Reservoir is electric-motor only and stays quieter, making it the better pick for kayakers and paddlers traveling with kids.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near New Franklin, OH
How much does an RV rental in New Franklin, OH typically cost?
RV rentals in New Franklin are surprisingly affordable, especially compared to flying or booking lakeside cabins around the Portage Lakes. On RVezy, travel trailers in the area typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans run $125 to $200, and larger Class A or Class C motorhomes range from $200 to $350 nightly depending on size and season. Booking midweek or during the shoulder months of late April, May, September, and early October can shave 20 to 30 percent off summer pricing. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and message a few hosts directly to ask about weekly discounts. Many New Franklin owners offer better rates for 5+ night stays around Turkeyfoot Lake, which makes a Portage Lakes getaway one of the best cheap RV rental New Franklin options in northeast Ohio.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/portage-lakes-state-parkDo I need a special license to rent an RV in New Franklin, Ohio?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in New Franklin. Ohio does not require a Commercial Driver's License for recreational vehicles used for personal travel, so a standard Class D license works for Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and most Class A coaches. To book on RVezy you must be at least 25 years old, and identity verification happens right in the platform during checkout, no DMV visit required. Visiting from another country? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit, which most national auto clubs issue for a small fee. That's it, you're cleared to cruise Manchester Road toward Portage Lakes State Park.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside assistance comes with my New Franklin RV rental?
Every RVezy booking in New Franklin includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Portage Lakes loop with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host, which means you decide how much cushion you want against accidental physical damage to the RV. If you get a dead battery at Turkeyfoot Lake or a tire issue on I-77, one phone call dispatches help. Pro tip: take photos at pickup and drop-off, it makes any claim a five-minute task on your RV rental in New Franklin.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my New Franklin RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rental, not individual hosts, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you have breathing room to confirm vacation days or check the weather forecast. Refund amounts after that grace period depend on how far in advance you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds the guest or provides travel credits so your plans are protected. Ohio summer storms occasionally roll across Summit County, so it's reassuring to know the platform has flexibility built in. Full details live in the RVezy Help Center, but the takeaway is simple: you're not locked in the moment you click reserve on your New Franklin RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in New Franklin?
Absolutely, New Franklin is a fantastic dog-friendly destination and tons of local hosts welcome pets. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to instantly see every pet-friendly RV rental New Franklin offers, and message the host to confirm any pet fee or size preference. Once you're rolling, your pup will love the Portage Lakes Dog Park right in town, and Portage Lakes State Park allows leashed pets at designated campsites and on all the hiking trails around Nimisila Reservoir. Cuyahoga Valley National Park, 20 minutes north, is also leash-friendly on the entire Towpath Trail. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl, the summer humidity around Turkeyfoot Lake can climb fast.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/portage-lakes-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in New Franklin?
Yes, RV delivery New Franklin is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you've never towed before. Many local hosts will drive the RV directly to Portage Lakes State Park, Nimisila Reservoir Metro Park, or even a private driveway, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Just use the Delivery filter on RVezy or ask the host through the message tool before booking. Delivery fees usually run between $2 and $4 per mile from the host's location, and most New Franklin owners are within 15 minutes of the major Summit County campgrounds. It's the smoothest way to do a first time renting an RV trip.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/portage-lakes-state-parkHow does mileage work and can I get an RV rental with unlimited mileage from New Franklin?
You have real flexibility here. Most New Franklin hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles charged at roughly $0.30 to $0.45 each, but plenty of owners offer RV rental with unlimited mileage packages perfect for longer Ohio loops. From New Franklin you're about 20 miles to Cuyahoga Valley National Park, 40 miles to Cleveland's lakefront, 60 miles to Amish Country in Holmes County, 130 miles to Pittsburgh, and around 150 miles to Lake Erie's Marblehead Lighthouse, all easy day or weekend trips. Pro tip: map your full route before booking and message the host with your estimated mileage. Many will bundle in extra miles at a discount rather than charging at the back end.
nps.gov/cuva/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near New Franklin to park an RV?
You're spoiled for choice. The headliner is Portage Lakes State Park Campground at 5031 Manchester Road, right in New Franklin, with 74 sites (6 electric, 68 non-electric), a dump station, and direct access to Turkeyfoot Lake's swim beach. Nimisila Reservoir Metro Park Campground, just a few miles south, offers quiet electric and non-electric sites with great fishing. Clay's Resort Jellystone Park in nearby Lawrence Township is a full-hookup, family-focused option with pools and activities. For a Cuyahoga Valley basecamp, Streetsboro / Cleveland SE KOA sits about 30 minutes north with full hookups. Pro tip: state park sites release on ReserveOhio and book up fast for summer weekends, so reserve 2 to 3 months ahead.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/portage-lakes-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from New Franklin?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping New Franklin, with June through August delivering warm 75 to 85°F days perfect for Turkeyfoot Lake swimming and boating. September and early October are the local insider favorite, with crisp 60 to 70°F afternoons and spectacular fall color along the Cuyahoga Valley Towpath Trail, plus far fewer crowds at Portage Lakes State Park. Spring (April to early May) brings wildflowers and rushing waterfalls at Brandywine Falls but can be muddy. Winter is genuinely cold (often in the 20s to low 30s with lake-effect snow), so most hosts pause rentals from December through March. Pro tip: book a fall weekend now if you want a lakefront site, foliage season fills first.
weather.gov/cle/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting in New Franklin?
You'll be great, first time renting an RV in New Franklin is genuinely one of the easiest places to start. Every host meets you in person for a full walkthrough covering the generator, propane, slide-outs, water systems, and dump procedure, and you can text or call them anytime during the trip with questions. The terrain around Summit County is flat to gently rolling, the speed limits on Manchester Road and the Portage Lakes Drive corridor are mellow, and I-77 has wide lanes for getting comfortable. If you're nervous, book a Class B campervan or smaller Class C, or pick a host who offers delivery so you can skip highway driving entirely. Pro tip: do a practice loop around the campground after pickup before heading out.
nps.gov/cuva/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy rental in New Franklin includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you get a flat tire on I-77, a dead battery at Nimisila Reservoir, run out of fuel, lock yourself out, or need a tow, one phone call dispatches a pro. For non-emergencies like a balky water pump or a stuck slide-out, your host is your first and best resource: they know their RV inside out and can usually talk you through it in five minutes. RVezy's customer support team is also reachable before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone contacts before you leave New Franklin.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my New Franklin RV rental to other states or into Canada?
Yes to interstate travel, and often yes to Canada. From New Franklin you're perfectly positioned for an RV road trip from New Franklin to Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh is 2 hours, the Allegheny National Forest about 3.5), West Virginia's New River Gorge (5 hours), or Michigan's Lake Huron coast (5 hours). Crossing into Canada at Niagara Falls or Detroit, about 4 to 5 hours away, is allowed by many hosts but you must confirm with them before booking since insurance documentation is required for the border. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: message the host with your full route, hosts who frequently do cross-border trips will help you prep paperwork in advance.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat should I budget for fuel on a New Franklin RV trip?
Fuel is very manageable here because Ohio gas prices typically sit below the national average. Campervans and small Class B rentals average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes run 8 to 12 MPG, Class A coaches get about 7 to 10 MPG, and a tow vehicle with a travel trailer lands around 10 to 14 MPG. As a quick budget: a 100-mile loop from New Franklin to Cuyahoga Valley National Park and back in a Class C costs roughly $30 to $45 in fuel at current Ohio pump prices. There's a Speedway and a Circle K right on South Main Street in New Franklin for easy fill-ups before you leave. Pro tip: use GasBuddy and fill up in Ohio before crossing into Pennsylvania, where prices jump.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near New Franklin?
Sooner is better, but it's not as competitive as the western national parks. Portage Lakes State Park Campground opens reservations on ReserveOhio about six months in advance, and its 6 electric sites disappear first, often within days of release for summer holiday weekends. For regular summer weekends, aim 8 to 12 weeks ahead; for fall foliage weekends in October, book 2 to 3 months out. Nimisila Reservoir Metro Park and Clay's Resort Jellystone are bookable through Summit Metro Parks and the resort's own site respectively. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Thursday) almost always have last-minute availability, even in July, so a Tuesday-to-Friday family RV trip New Franklin is the local insider play.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/portage-lakes-state-parkWhat are local driving conditions like around New Franklin?
Driving here is refreshingly easy. New Franklin sits in southern Summit County with flat-to-rolling terrain, wide two-lane state routes like Manchester Road and South Main, and quick access to I-77, which is a straight, well-maintained highway running between Cleveland and Canton. Ohio law caps RV height at 13 feet 6 inches and width at 102 inches, well within every standard rental, and the Ohio Turnpike limits vehicles over 10,000 pounds to 65 mph (still plenty fast). Lake-effect snow can hit November through March, so winter rentals are rare. Local insider tip: avoid Portage Lakes Drive on Independence Day evening, the annual Portage Lakes Fireworks Display draws hundreds of thousands of people and traffic backs up for hours.
dot.state.oh.us/Pages/Home.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near New Franklin?
Expect a solid range. Portage Lakes State Park Campground offers picnic tables, fire rings, a dump station, and pit latrines, with 6 electric sites and 68 non-electric sites, plus drinking water near the Turkeyfoot Lake beach. Clay's Resort Jellystone Park and other private parks in the area offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, pools, and camp stores. The free public dump station at Portage Lakes State Park is the easiest place to empty tanks before returning the RV. Most state and metro park sites do not have individual sewer hookups, so plan to use the dump station on departure day. Pro tip: top off fresh water at Portage Lakes' day-use area before heading into Nimisila for primitive electric-only sites.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/portage-lakes-state-parkWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in New Franklin?
More than you'd expect. Most motorhome rental New Franklin listings come fully equipped with a real bed (queen or king), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with AC and furnace, and dinette seating that often converts to extra sleeping space. Larger Class A and Class C rigs usually include a TV, and many hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots, onboard generators for boondocking at Nimisila, outdoor speakers, and even kayaks or bikes as add-ons. Every rental has DOT-approved seatbelts for designated travel seats, so you'll know exactly how many people can legally ride. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities checklist and message the host if you want a specific item like a coffee maker confirmed.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/seat-beltsWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in New Franklin?
Hosts in New Franklin offer a generous menu of extras to make your trip turnkey. Common add-ons include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, generators, propane fills, bike racks, kayaks for paddling the Portage Lakes, outdoor furniture, and pet packages. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or around New Franklin, with delivery available to Portage Lakes State Park, Nimisila Reservoir, or even the Akron-Canton Airport area for an additional mileage-based fee. Mileage policies vary by listing (typically 100 to 150 free miles per night, with unlimited mileage options available), so check the listing details. Pro tip: bundling add-ons with one host is almost always cheaper than buying separately, just ask before booking your RV rental in New Franklin.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/portage-lakes-state-parkHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in New Franklin?
It's all handled securely through RVezy, no cash or off-platform payment apps. When you book, your payment method is charged for the rental total (nightly rate, fees, taxes, any add-ons), and a refundable security deposit is held separately, typically between $500 and $1,500 depending on the RV type and value. The deposit is released back to you after drop-off once the host confirms there's no damage or missing equipment, usually within a few business days. To avoid any deposit issues, take time-stamped photos and a short walk-around video at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and use the campground dump station before heading back. Pro tip: bring a copy of your driver's license to pickup for a smooth handoff on your New Franklin RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from New Franklin, OH?
You're sitting on a goldmine of routes. Cuyahoga Valley National Park is just 20 miles north (about 30 minutes) for Brandywine Falls, the Ledges Trail, and 87 miles of Towpath Trail. Lake Erie's Cedar Point in Sandusky is 90 miles northwest for roller coasters and beaches. Ohio Amish Country (Berlin, Walnut Creek, Sugarcreek) is a charming 60-mile drive southwest. Hocking Hills State Park, with its waterfalls and gorges, sits 150 miles south, about 2.5 hours via I-77. For a bigger adventure, Niagara Falls is 230 miles northeast (4 hours). Local insider tip: a New Franklin RV trip combining Portage Lakes for two nights and Cuyahoga Valley for two is the perfect long weekend, low miles, big variety, and easy driving the whole way.
