Campgrounds near New Philadelphia
New Philadelphia sits in Tuscarawas County in east-central Ohio, in the Tuscarawas River valley about ten miles west of Interstate 77. The area serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring Amish Country to the west and the Muskingum Watershed lakes to the east and south.
The closest developed lake camping is at Atwood Lake Park Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist, operated by the MWCD. The MWCD was organized in 1933 and today manages sixteen reservoirs and dams across the region, with its parks anchoring most of the drive-in RV camping around New Philadelphia. Additional options nearby include Woods Tall Timber Lake Resort, Camp Tuscazoar Foundation Inc, Canton / East Sparta KOA Holiday, and Baylor Beach Park; Water Park and Campground.
Atwood Lake itself is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir with recreation facilities operated by MWCD, reached via Exit 93 (Bolivar/Zoar) on I-77 and State Route 212 east across Atwood Dam. Distances from New Philadelphia to most listed campgrounds are short, keeping fuel and drive time low for a family trip.
Things to do near New Philadelphia
Atwood Lake Park is the region's main water-recreation hub, with a swimming beach, playground, picnic areas, hiking trails, and one of Ohio's top sailing and pleasure-boating lakes set within about 2,500 acres of surrounding forest. The park also hosts the Atwood Fall Festival each autumn.
Camp Tuscazoar Foundation Inc sits on roughly 800 acres of wooded terrain in the Tuscarawas Valley, with an extensive trail network used for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The historic Zoar Village, a National Historic Landmark, is a short drive away.
Families with younger kids often add a day at Baylor Beach Park; Water Park and Campground for the swim beach and water attractions, while the Canton / East Sparta KOA Holiday works as a base for Pro Football Hall of Fame visits in Canton.

The full park season at Atwood Lake Park runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, when beaches, concessions, and the busiest event calendar are all active. Summer weekends are the peak booking window for MWCD campgrounds and for KOA sites in the region, and prime dates commonly sell out weeks or months ahead.
Shoulder seasons are useful for RV travelers who want quieter sites. Camping at MWCD lakes is available all year long, though many amenities scale back outside the main park season. Camp Tuscazoar is open to the public year-round and hosts weekend campers, hikers, mountain bikers, and horse riders throughout the year.
Fall brings cooler nights, foliage color along the Tuscarawas Valley ridges, and the Atwood Fall Festival, when gate fees at Atwood Lake Park vary. Winters are cold and snowy, with services scaled back, so check individual park status before booking a December through February trip.

We used the camper for a camping trip over a weekend. The camper was clean and spacious for us and our 3 kids. We had an issue with the air conditioner. When asked about the issue was promptly addressed.

How to book a campsite
Reservations for Atwood Lake Park and other MWCD campgrounds are handled through the MWCD online portal at reserve.mwcd.org, or by phone. The system lets users search inventory across all MWCD parks at once, so alternate locations appear if the first choice is full. For peak-season summer weekends, book as early as possible.
Camp Tuscazoar Foundation Inc takes reservations through its own online portal and by email, with sites available for daily, weekly, or long-term rental. Canton / East Sparta KOA Holiday books through the KOA website or app, and Woods Tall Timber Lake Resort and Baylor Beach Park handle reservations directly with the property. Confirm rig length limits and hookup type at time of booking.
What to expect on site
Atwood Lake Park offers more than 500 campsites for RVs and tents. Area H, opened in 2018, features 142 full hook-up sites with concrete pads and 50-amp service, plus a playground, shower and restroom facilities with laundry, and a pavilion. Other electric sites use 30-amp service. MWCD has partnered with General RV Center in North Canton to offer two rental RVs at Atwood Lake Park. Quiet hours in MWCD parks run from 11 PM to 7 AM, and check-in for camping is 4 PM with check-out at 2 PM.
Camp Tuscazoar's RV park has nine pads ranging from 33 to 62 feet with loose limestone bases, 30-amp electric and water hookups, a grey water pipe at each site, and an on-site black water dump station. A tiny house rental is also available in the RV park. Firewood is sold on site.

A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in New Philadelphia, even for a 32-foot Class C or a fifth wheel. Ohio does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) for personal recreational vehicles, so your standard license works for every RV on RVezy. All approved drivers must generally be 25 or older, and you'll verify your ID securely through the RVezy platform when you book, no extra paperwork needed at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly the licensing piece is handled, often in under five minutes online before your trip.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets and manages the cancellation policy for every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after you book, so you're not locked in the moment you click confirm. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best rigs for fall foliage season, and reach out to RVezy support if anything unexpected pops up.

Pro tip: book Atwood and Tappan through the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District reservation system, sites for summer weekends often fill 60 to 90 days out.
mwcd.org/places/parks-campgroundsWhen is the best time to take an RV trip from New Philadelphia?
Late April through late October is the sweet spot, with September and early October stealing the show thanks to spectacular Tuscarawas Valley fall foliage. Summer highs in New Philadelphia average in the low to mid 80s F (June through August), perfect for swimming at Tuscora Park's pools and paddling the Tuscarawas River. Spring (April to May) brings wildflowers and cooler 60s, ideal for hiking the Norma Johnson Center. Winters dip into the 20s and 30s with occasional snow, so most campgrounds close November through March, though a handful of four-season hosts on RVezy offer winterized rigs with heated tanks. Pro tip: aim for the second weekend of October for peak color and harvest festivals in nearby Amish Country.
weather.gov/cle/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, and you won't be doing it alone. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, the generator, and the toilet system before you pull away. New Philadelphia is a friendly place to learn: I-77 runs straight through town with wide lanes and easy on-ramps, and back roads through Tuscarawas County are gently rolling rather than steep. If you're nervous about driving, choose a smaller Class C, a campervan, or go with delivery so the rig is parked and ready for you. Pro tip: practice a few right turns in the New Towne Mall parking lot before hitting the highway, every first-timer thanks themselves later.
transportation.ohio.gov/programs/highway-safetyWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're on I-77 near Dover, on US-250 heading toward Amish Country, or tucked into a site at Tappan Lake. Roadside support handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and many mechanical issues. The host is also your direct line for questions about the rig itself, and most owners answer texts within minutes. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave New Philadelphia, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN so you have everything you need if you ever call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV rental out of state or to Canada?
Yes, most New Philadelphia hosts welcome interstate travel, which makes this a fantastic base for an RV road trip from New Philadelphia. Popular cross-state runs include Pittsburgh, PA (about 110 miles east), Niagara Falls, NY (about 290 miles northeast), the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, and the Great Lakes shoreline in Michigan. Travel into Canada may also be allowed, just message the host before booking and confirm so insurance coverage stays in place. One firm rule: travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance does not extend there. Pro tip: Ohio's central location puts you within a day's drive of many states, ideal for a longer loop. Always confirm route plans with your host in writing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's the fuel cost like for an RV trip in this area?
Fuel in eastern Ohio is among the more affordable in the region, with gas in the New Philadelphia and Dover area typically running $0.10 to $0.20 below the national average. Expect a Class C motorhome to get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (mpg), a campervan 16 to 22 mpg, and a travel trailer combo 10 to 14 mpg depending on your tow vehicle. For a 300-mile loop through Amish Country, Cuyahoga Valley, and back, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel for a mid-size Class C. Pro tip: the Sheetz and GetGo stations along I-77 in Dover usually have the cheapest diesel in Tuscarawas County, top off there before heading into the hills.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near New Philadelphia?
For the best campgrounds near New Philadelphia, aim to reserve 60 to 90 days out for summer weekends and about 30 days out for shoulder season. Atwood Lake Park and Tappan Lake Park, both run by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD), open reservations up to a year in advance and fill quickly for Memorial Day, July 4th (especially during First Town Days), and Labor Day. Ohio State Parks use the ReserveOhio system. Pro tip: midweek arrivals at MWCD parks rarely sell out, and you can often snag a lakeside full-hookup site with two days' notice, perfect for a spontaneous family RV trip New Philadelphia getaway.
mwcd.org/places/parks-campgroundsWhat are local driving conditions like around New Philadelphia?
Driving here is refreshingly relaxed, which is one reason an RV rental Ohio trip based out of New Philadelphia is so beginner-friendly. I-77 is a wide, well-maintained four-lane that connects you north to Akron-Canton and south to Cambridge. US-250 and SR-39 wind through Amish Country with gentle hills, but watch for horse-drawn buggies, especially Sunday mornings and weekday evenings near Sugarcreek and Berlin. Winter (December to March) can bring lake-effect snow and icy patches, so most renters stick to April through October. Avoid taking tall rigs under the low railroad underpass on West High Avenue in New Philadelphia (clearance posted at 11'6"). Pro tip: ODOT's OHGO app gives live traffic and construction updates statewide, a quick check before you roll out saves headaches.
ohgo.com/What amenities do campgrounds near New Philadelphia offer?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Atwood Lake Park offers full hookups (water, electric, sewer) at premium sites, plus dump stations, hot showers, a camp store, swimming beach, and boat rentals. Tappan Lake Park has electric and full-hookup options, fish cleaning stations, and laundry facilities. Smaller spots like Sally Buffalo Park provide electric-only sites with a central dump station and potable water fill. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter, eastern Ohio campgrounds use a mix of both, and you'll be ready for any site without scrambling.
mwcd.org/places/parks-campgrounds/tappan-lake-parkWhat's inside the RVs I can rent in New Philadelphia?
Expect more comforts than you'd guess. Most New Philadelphia listings include a queen or king bed, a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, dinette seating that often converts to extra sleeping space, air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Many rigs add a TV, Bluetooth stereo, awning, outdoor speakers, and even built-in generators for boondocking. Each RVezy listing shows exactly what's inside, plus the sleeps count, so you can match the rig to your group size. Pro tip: if you want Wi-Fi on the road, look for hosts who include a mobile hotspot as an add-on, cell coverage is strong along I-77 and Atwood Lake but spotty in the deeper Amish Country backroads.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Philadelphia,%20OhioWhat add-ons and pickup options are available?
Hosts in New Philadelphia offer some genuinely useful extras to make your trip easier. Common add-ons include camping chairs and tables, kitchen kits with dishes and cookware, bedding and linen packages, bikes, kayaks, propane refills, generators, and portable Wi-Fi hotspots, typically $10 to $50 each. Pickup is usually at the host's home in New Philadelphia, Dover, or nearby Sugarcreek, with delivery available for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies are listed on every RV's page, ranging from a set number of free miles per night up to unlimited mileage on select rigs. Pro tip: bundle add-ons when you message the host, many will discount a package (chairs plus kitchen kit plus linens) rather than charging a la carte, saving you on a week-long trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Philadelphia,%20OhioHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through RVezy: you pay by credit or debit card directly on the platform, never in cash to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and released back to you a few days after a clean return, with the amount set by each listing. The total cost, including any add-ons, taxes, and the deposit hold, is shown clearly before you confirm, so there are no surprise charges. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video walkaround of the RV at both pickup and drop-off in New Philadelphia, it's the fastest way to keep your deposit return smooth and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from New Philadelphia?
New Philadelphia is a perfect launchpad. Cuyahoga Valley National Park (70 miles north) offers waterfalls, scenic railroad rides, and the Towpath Trail. Amish Country around Berlin, Walnut Creek, and Sugarcreek (25 to 40 miles west) is famous for cheese houses, buggy rides, and Der Dutchman restaurant. Hocking Hills State Park (115 miles southwest) delivers Ohio's most dramatic gorges and waterfalls. Lake Erie and Cedar Point in Sandusky (140 miles north) make a thrilling family weekend, and Pittsburgh, PA (110 miles east) is a fun urban add-on with great food and Three Rivers parks. Pro tip: don't skip Historic Schoenbrunn Village right in New Philadelphia, Ohio's first Christian settlement (1772) is a must-see before you head out exploring.
