Campgrounds near Northwood, Ohio
Northwood sits in Wood County just southeast of Toledo, minutes from Lake Erie's western basin and the Maumee River corridor. The area works well as a base for RV travelers heading to Lake Erie beaches, Toledo attractions, or as an overnight stop on the I-80/I-90 and I-75 corridors.
Camping options range from a full-service state park to private RV parks with pull-through, full-hookup sites. Maumee Bay State Park Campground is located just five miles east of Toledo on Lake Erie's southwestern shore and offers electric and full-hookup sites within a large family campground. Toledo East / Stony Ridge KOA Journey is a nearby private option with long pull-through sites, and Covered Wagon Camp Resort, Harbortown RV Resort, and Camp Sabroske round out the choices in the surrounding area.
Most sites are on flat, gravel or paved pads suitable for larger rigs, and several campgrounds provide 20, 30, and 50 amp electric hookups, cable, and Wi-Fi.
Things to do near Northwood
Lake Erie access defines the recreation menu. Maumee Bay State Park has a 57-acre inland lake suitable for sailing, canoeing, and other non-motorized boat use, an accessible boardwalk trail, a nature center, a golf course, and five miles of asphalt bicycle and pedestrian trails that provide access to most day-use areas. Bird watching is a signature draw: more than 300 bird species have been observed here, and the surrounding Lake Erie marshes are a well-known migration corridor.
Families staying at Toledo East / Stony Ridge KOA Journey have on-site amenities including a pool, playground, and lawn games. Off-property, Toledo itself is a short drive for the Toledo Museum of Art, the Toledo Zoo, and Fort Meigs, the reconstructed War of 1812 fortification in nearby Perrysburg.

The core camping season runs from late spring through early fall. May through October is the practical window for full amenities: at Maumee Bay State Park, heated shower houses operate during peak season, May through October, and Lake Erie dockage is available May to October at the Maumee Bay Lodge Marina. July and August bring peak lake weather, peak crowds, and the tightest reservation windows.
Spring and fall are quieter. Late spring and early summer are the wettest stretch locally and coincide with warbler migration on the Lake Erie marshes, drawing serious birders to the region. September and early October typically bring warm days, cool nights, and open sites midweek.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Maumee Bay State Park Campground is open year-round, however from November 1 to April 30 the showerhouses are closed and two family restrooms are heated and include shower facilities. Full-hookup sites do not have water during winter months, and a reduced set of sites remains open in the off-season.

We rented this trailer from David for a work event/music festival and it was absolutely amazing. The air conditioning alone was enough to make the entire process SO worth it in the 90 degree summer heat. We had an amazing time and wish we would have had the time and days to use more of the amenities he offered!

How to book a campground near Northwood
Ohio state park sites are reserved through the state's central system. Reservations may be made up to six months in advance online or by calling (866) 644-6727, with bookings handled at reserveohio.com. Summer weekends and holiday periods at the state park book out early, so setting a six-month rolling booking target is the safest approach.
Private campgrounds handle their own reservations. Toledo East / Stony Ridge KOA Journey takes bookings through the KOA website or by phone. Covered Wagon Camp Resort, Harbortown RV Resort, and Camp Sabroske each take reservations through their own websites or by phone. For sold-out state park dates, cancellation-notification services can help pick up midsummer openings.
What to expect
Terrain around Northwood is flat lake plain. Each site at Maumee Bay State Park includes a paved parking pad, grassy area, picnic table, and fire ring, with foliage providing privacy between sites, and the campground offers electric and full-hookup options with 20, 30, and 50 amp service. Note that full-service sites do not have water at the site; fees are reduced accordingly, and a dump station with potable water and hoses is available.
Private parks in the area tend to offer long pull-throughs, cable, Wi-Fi, and standard family amenities such as pools and playgrounds. Access from I-75, I-280, and the Ohio Turnpike (I-80/I-90) is straightforward for larger rigs.
Expect biting insects near the marshes in early summer and occasional strong winds off Lake Erie. Pets are permitted on designated sites at Maumee Bay.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Northwood, OH
How much does an RV rental in Northwood, OH typically cost?
Renting an RV in Northwood is one of the more affordable ways to explore northern Ohio and Lake Erie. On RVezy, travel trailers in the Toledo area generally start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs sit higher depending on the season. You will also see a one-time cleaning fee, optional add-ons like generator use or camp chairs, and the protection package selected at checkout. To find a cheap RV rental in Northwood, book mid-week stays in May or September, filter by travel trailers, and look for hosts offering unlimited mileage. Pro tip: Cedar Point weekends sell out fast, so locking in early saves real money.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Northwood%2C+OhioWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Northwood, OH?
Good news: your everyday driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Northwood. Ohio does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for the motorhomes and trailers listed on RVezy, even for Class A rigs up to roughly 40 feet. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy will verify your ID through the platform during booking, so there is no paperwork to print or notarize. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP), usually under $20 from your local auto club. Most first-timers are surprised how quick the approval step is, often the same day they book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat kind of protection is included with my Northwood RV rental?
Every RV rental in Northwood booked through RVezy comes with a built-in protection package and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can pull onto the Ohio Turnpike with real peace of mind. The protection package covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout, not the host, so you control how much extra cushion you want. Roadside help covers things like flat tires, jump starts, lockouts, and towing if needed anywhere on your route. This is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides serious financial protection for renters new to RV camping in Northwood. Pro tip: pick your protection tier before you head toward Maumee Bay so you can focus on the lake, not the paperwork.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my plans change?
You can book your Northwood RV trip with confidence because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, and there is a grace-period window after booking where you can cancel and get your money back. After that, the refund amount depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. Because Ohio weather can swing from sunny 80s to thunderstorms in the same week, that flexibility matters. You will see the exact terms during checkout, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip if anything changes. Pro tip: book early for Cedar Point season, you will lock in the best rigs while keeping your cancellation options open.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Northwood RV rental?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Northwood lets you bring the whole family, including the dog. Many RVezy hosts in the Toledo area welcome pets, and you can filter listings by Pet-Friendly to see them instantly. Once you arrive, the region is loaded with dog-approved spots: Maumee Bay State Park has pet camping loops and a designated pet swim area, Pearson Metropark in nearby Oregon has shaded leashed trails, and Side Cut Metropark along the Maumee River is a favorite for an after-dinner walk. Some hosts charge a small pet fee or require extra cleaning, so check the listing or message the host before booking. Pro tip: pack a towel for muddy Lake Erie paws, your host will thank you.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/maumee-bay-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway?
Yes, RV delivery in Northwood is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who would rather not drive a 30-foot rig down I-280. Many local hosts will deliver your RV directly to Maumee Bay State Park, Toledo East/Stony Ridge KOA, or your own driveway in the Toledo metro area, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees usually depend on mileage from the host's location, and some hosts include free delivery within a set radius. Use the Delivery filter when searching to see qualifying listings. Pro tip: stationary delivery is the easiest way to enjoy a family RV trip in Northwood without ever touching a steering wheel.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Northwood%2C+OhioHow does mileage work, and how far can I realistically drive from Northwood?
Mileage on RVezy is set by each host, but Northwood is a fantastic launch pad whether you want short hops or a bigger loop. From Northwood you are about 10 minutes to downtown Toledo, 20 minutes to Maumee Bay State Park, 60 minutes to Cedar Point in Sandusky, 90 minutes to Detroit, 2 hours to Cleveland and Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and roughly 2 hours to Hocking Hills' northern edge (closer to 3 hours to the main gorge area). Many local hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some list RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for an RV road trip from Northwood along the Lake Erie shore. Pro tip: if you are planning the Lake Erie Coastal Ohio Trail, filter for unlimited miles upfront.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Northwood%2C+OhioWhere are the best campgrounds near Northwood for an RV trip?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to the best campgrounds near Northwood. Maumee Bay State Park Campground in Oregon (about 20 minutes away) offers around 250 electric sites, a Lake Erie beach, and paved bike paths. Toledo East/Stony Ridge KOA in Stony Ridge has full hookups, a pool, and easy Ohio Turnpike access. Bayshore Estates sits minutes from Cedar Point in the Sandusky area. Mary Jane Thurston State Park along the Maumee River offers quieter riverside sites about 35 minutes southwest. And East Harbor State Park near Marblehead has hundreds of sites right on Lake Erie. Pro tip: state park sites at Maumee Bay and East Harbor open six months in advance and Cedar Point weekends sell out fast, so book the day the window opens.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/maumee-bay-state-parkWhen is the best time to visit Northwood in an RV?
Late May through early October is prime time for RV camping in Northwood, with average highs from 70 to 82 degrees and warm Lake Erie water by July. June and September are the sweet spot: lower humidity, fewer mosquitoes around the marshes, and easier campground reservations than peak July. Fall (mid-September to late October) brings beautiful leaf color along the Maumee River and Cuyahoga Valley, plus crisp 60-degree days perfect for hiking. Winters are genuinely cold (averaging around 20 to 35 degrees with occasional lake-effect snow), so most public campgrounds close from late October through April, though a handful of private parks stay open year-round. Pro tip: time your trip with the spring warbler migration in May at nearby Magee Marsh, it is world-famous and RV sites fill up fast.
weather.gov/cle/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will be just fine, and you are far from alone. Most people booking on RVezy are first time renting an RV, and northwest Ohio is honestly one of the easier places in the country to start: flat terrain, wide highways like I-280 and I-75, and big-box parking lots for practice loops before you head out. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering propane, water, slides, leveling, and dumping, and you can text them mid-trip with questions. If city driving makes you nervous, choose delivery so the RV is already parked and set up at your campground. Pro tip: a Class C motorhome or 25-foot travel trailer is the sweet spot for new drivers around Toledo.
transportation.ohio.gov/programs/safetyWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You are never stuck on the side of the road alone. Every motorhome rental in Northwood booked on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing whether you are on I-75, the Ohio Turnpike, or a quiet stretch near Port Clinton. You also have a direct line to your host for questions about a stubborn slide-out or a finicky water pump, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's roadside-assistance card and emergency reflectors during your walkthrough so you know exactly where they are if you ever need them.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take the RV across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is fine on most RVezy rentals, and Northwood is a fantastic jumping-off point: Michigan is just 45 minutes north, Indiana under 2 hours west, and Pennsylvania about 3 hours east. The Detroit-Windsor crossings are roughly an hour away, and many hosts allow cross-border travel into Canada, but you must confirm this with the host in advance because insurance and protection coverage need to be updated for international travel. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: if you are eyeing an RV road trip from Northwood up to Ontario's Point Pelee or Niagara Falls, message the host before booking and bring your passport plus the vehicle paperwork they will provide.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of gas mileage and fuel costs should I budget for?
Budgeting fuel for a Northwood RV trip is easier than most people expect. Class B campervans get roughly 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, Class A rigs run 6 to 10 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 mpg). Ohio gas prices generally sit slightly below the national average, and there are plenty of large fuel stations with RV-friendly pumps along I-280, I-75, and the Ohio Turnpike, including Pilot, Flying J, and TA truck stops near Stony Ridge. A weekend round-trip to Cedar Point and back will usually run $40 to $80 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: compare prices on either side of the Michigan border before filling up, taxes and pricing shift across the line.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Northwood?
For peak summer in northwest Ohio, the earlier the better. Ohio State Parks (including Maumee Bay and East Harbor) open reservations up to 6 months in advance through the official Ohio State Parks reservation system, and popular Lake Erie sites can sell out within hours for July and August weekends. Private parks like Toledo East/Stony Ridge KOA and resorts near Cedar Point also fill up 3 to 6 months ahead for holiday weekends. For mid-week stays in June or September, two to four weeks of lead time is usually plenty. Pro tip: set a calendar alert for the exact 6-month mark if you want a lakefront site at Maumee Bay, those go first, and they are worth the alarm.
reserveohio.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Northwood?
Driving an RV around Northwood is genuinely easy: the terrain is flat, the highways are wide, and there are no mountain passes to worry about. I-280 and I-75 run right through town with plenty of pull-off space, and the Ohio Turnpike (I-80/90) offers oversized service plazas with dedicated RV parking. Watch for two things: summer construction season (May through October) on I-75 and I-280 bridges, and lake-effect snow squalls from November to March that can drop visibility fast near the Lake Erie shoreline. Toledo rush hour (7 to 9 am, 4 to 6 pm) is best avoided in a big rig. Pro tip: check the OHGO service from ODOT for real-time Ohio traffic and construction alerts before you roll out.
ohgo.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Northwood?
Campgrounds near Northwood are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Ohio State Park campgrounds like Maumee Bay and East Harbor offer 30/50-amp electric, potable water spigots, dump stations, hot showers, and flush toilets, with Wi-Fi available at many sites. Private parks like Toledo East/Stony Ridge KOA typically have full hookups (electric, water, sewer at each site), laundry, pools, and propane refills on-site. For dump and fill-up stops on the road, several Ohio Turnpike service plazas offer RV dump stations, and most state park entrances have a fill-water spigot. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-safe water hose and a sewer hose support, Ohio sites are generally level but spaced generously, and you will appreciate the extra length.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/maumee-bay-state-parkWhat features and amenities will the RV itself have?
Local RVezy rentals are set up for real comfort. Most Northwood RVs sleep 4 to 8 people with a queen bed, bunks, and convertible dinette, plus a fully equipped kitchen (fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink), an indoor bathroom with shower and flush toilet, roof air conditioning, propane furnace, and 12V/110V outlets. Many include flat-screen TVs, Bluetooth stereos, outdoor speakers, and awnings for those Lake Erie sunset evenings. Wi-Fi hotspots and onboard generators are common add-ons (especially useful for boondocking near Magee Marsh), and seatbelts are provided for every legal passenger. Pro tip: confirm the number of seatbelted seats matches your travel group before booking, this is one of the most-missed details for first-time families.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Northwood%2C+OhioWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in the Northwood area offer a wide range of add-ons that can transform your trip: generators (great for Cedar Point parking lot tailgates), bike racks, kayak/paddleboard mounts, outdoor camp kitchens, propane fire pits, linen and kitchen packages, and pet packs. Pickup is typically at the host's home in the Toledo/Wood County area, but many offer delivery to local campgrounds or your driveway. Mileage policies vary, look for unlimited-mileage listings if you are planning a bigger Lake Erie loop. Pickup and drop-off windows are set by each host on the listing, with most leaving time for cleaning between bookings. Pro tip: ask for the linens-and-towels package on your first rental, it is usually $50 to $75 and saves a trip to the store the night before.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Northwood%2C+OhioHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your RV rental in Northwood is handled entirely through RVezy, so there is no cash or off-platform money talk. You pay your rental total, cleaning fee, chosen protection package, and any add-ons at booking with a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is placed on your card before pickup (the amount depends on the RV and protection tier you choose) and is released after drop-off, assuming no damage or unpaid mileage/generator overages. To avoid surprises: do a thorough walkthrough with photos and video at both pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and stay within your mileage allowance. Pro tip: time-stamped phone videos are your best friend, they have settled more than a few questions on both sides.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat is one local insider tip for a Northwood RV trip?
Here is a tip most visitors miss: spend a morning at Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, about 30 minutes east of Northwood along State Route 2. In May, it transforms into one of the best warbler-watching spots in North America (locals call it The Biggest Week in American Birding) and even non-birders are stunned by the boardwalk. Pair it with a casual lunch in nearby Curtice or Oregon, then drive about 20 minutes to Port Clinton for a Lake Erie sunset. Bonus: the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge auto tour right next door is RV-friendly and free. Pro tip: if you are driving a tall rig, take SR-2 east instead of the I-280 Veterans' Glass City Skyway during rush hour for a smoother, more scenic exit out of the Toledo area.
