Camping near Ontario, Ohio
Ontario sits in Richland County in north-central Ohio, just west of Mansfield along US 30. The area draws RV travelers because it combines quick highway access with lakes, working farms, and state parkland within a short drive. Most campgrounds cluster to the south and southeast of the city, toward the Mohican region.
Charles Mill Lake Park Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist is the closest full-service lake destination, sitting on 2,000 acres in Richland and Ashland Counties with more than 400 sites split between Main Camp and Eagle Point. Malabar Farm State Park lies in Pleasant Valley to the southeast and offers a small primitive campground on a working farm. River Trail Crossing RV Park is another nearby option for travelers looking for a private park with pull-through sites.
For family-focused resort camping, Shelby / Mansfield KOA Resort is about a half-hour north, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Columbus North gives Ontario-based travelers a Columbus-area alternative within easy reach.
Things to do near Ontario
Water recreation anchors most trips. Charles Mill Lake has a 1,350-acre surface with a 10-horsepower limit, which keeps things quiet for kayaking, fishing, and pontoon cruising, and the park includes a designated swimming area and a full-service marina with a gas dock and boat rentals. The lake reaches a maximum depth of 24 feet with 34 miles of shoreline.
Malabar Farm State Park offers hiking and equestrian trails, a working farm, and guided tours of the 32-room Big House once owned by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louis Bromfield. Families staying at Shelby / Mansfield KOA Resort have on-site heated pools, a splash park, mini golf, a jumping pillow, pedal karts, and paddle boats without leaving the campground. Nearby off-site draws include Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, the Ohio State Reformatory, and Ohio's Amish Country.

The main camping season in this part of Ohio runs from late April through mid-October. Shelby / Mansfield KOA Resort operates from May 1 through October 15, and most private and state park sites open on a similar window. Summer weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the busiest stretch, especially at Charles Mill Lake, where the swimming beach is open in season and seasonal camping permits run April 1 through October 31.
Spring brings variable weather and higher rainfall, with late spring and early summer typically the wettest stretch in the Mansfield area. It is a good time for hiking at Malabar Farm before insect pressure peaks, though ground conditions at primitive sites can be soft.
Fall delivers cooler nights, foliage color across the glaciated Appalachian Plateau, and lighter crowds through September and October. Winter camping is limited: Malabar Farm's primitive campground is open year-round for reservations, but with no electric or water at the site, while private resorts in the region close for the season.
How to book campgrounds near Ontario
Charles Mill Lake Park uses the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District's own reservation system at reserve.mwcd.org. The reservation holder must be at least 18 and be an occupant on the site, camping check-in is 4:00 PM and check-out is 2:00 PM, quiet hours run from 11 PM to 7 AM, and leashed pets are permitted at Main Camp but not at Eagle Point.
Malabar Farm State Park is booked through the Ohio State Parks system. Reservations may be made up to six months in advance online at reserveohio.com or by calling (866) 644-6727, and self-registration is available for empty sites on arrival.
Shelby / Mansfield KOA Resort and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park use their own franchise booking sites. For peak summer weekends and holidays, reserve as far ahead as possible.
What to expect at Ontario-area campgrounds
Site types vary widely across the area. Charles Mill Lake Park offers a mix of electric and non-electric sites plus three patio cabins, with 30-amp service on electric sites, a registration office and gate house that sell ice and firewood, and guest Wi-Fi at Main Camp and the Eagle Point pavilion. Malabar Farm is the opposite end of the spectrum: 15 primitive walk-in sites with fire rings, picnic tables, drinking water, and latrines, but no electric and no water at the site.
Shelby / Mansfield KOA Resort is big-rig friendly, with level gravel pull-through and back-in sites, full hookups, patios, Wi-Fi, and a fitness center on site. Expect gravel pads at most sites in the region and cell service that is generally usable near the highways but weak in the wooded valleys south of Ontario.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Ontario, OH
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Ontario, OH?
RV rental in Ontario, OH is one of the most affordable ways to explore north-central Ohio. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $75 to $125 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $150 to $250 per night, and larger Class A motorhomes run from $200 to $350 per night. Prices climb in peak summer (June through August) when Mohican State Park is busiest, so booking shoulder-season trips in May, September, or October can lower your nightly rate. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy and skip the tow vehicle entirely. A cheap RV rental in Ontario, OH gets even better when the host meets you right at your campsite.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ontario,OhioDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Ontario, Ohio?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Ontario, Ohio. Ohio does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for recreational vehicles used for personal travel, even for larger Class A motorhomes. You'll need to be 25 or older to book through RVezy, hold a valid driver's license, and complete a quick ID verification through the platform. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association, usually under $20. That's it. Most guests are surprised how simple the process is, especially compared to booking a flight.
bmv.ohio.gov/dl-cdl-exemptions.aspxWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Ontario, OH?
Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you pick up the keys. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip, giving you peace of mind without buying a separate policy. During checkout, you choose between different coverage levels (guests pick, not hosts) so you can match protection to your trip and budget. Combined with around-the-clock roadside help, you can focus on enjoying Mohican Country instead of worrying about the what-ifs on your Ontario, OH RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Ontario, OH RV rental?
You can book with confidence: RVezy sets a clear cancellation policy on every reservation, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you have room to change your mind. Cancellation outcomes depend on factors like how far in advance you cancel and extenuating circumstances such as severe weather, which Ohio sees occasionally with summer storms or winter snow. Hosts do not set cancellation terms; RVezy manages the policy centrally so the experience is consistent across every listing. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or offers travel credits, and the support team is available before, during, and after your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Ontario, OH?
Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Ontario, OH is easy to find. On RVezy, toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you will see listings that welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Many Richland County hosts are pet owners themselves and accommodate furry co-pilots, sometimes with a small cleaning fee. Once you are on the road, your pup will love Gorman Nature Center's trails just minutes from Ontario, the leashed-pet-friendly campsites at Mohican State Park, and the open fields at Charles Mill Lake Park. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any breed or size preferences, and pack a long lead so your dog can lounge outside the RV at camp.
ohiodnr.gov/discover-and-learn/safety-conservation/about-odnr/state-parks-watercraft/petsinparksCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Ontario, OH?
Yes, and RV delivery in Ontario, OH is a game-changer for first-timers. Many Ontario-area hosts will drive the rig to your campground, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. This is ideal if you are nervous about backing a 30-foot motorhome into a wooded site at Mohican State Park or Charles Mill Lake Park. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location, so closer campgrounds cost less. Filter by Delivery on RVezy and message the host to confirm your specific destination. You show up, they set up.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ontario,OhioHow far can I drive on an RV trip from Ontario, OH?
Ontario, OH sits in a sweet spot for an RV road trip from Ontario, OH because so many bucket-list destinations are within an easy day's drive. Mohican State Park is just 25 miles southeast, Cuyahoga Valley National Park is about 80 miles north, the Lake Erie Islands and Cedar Point are roughly 75 miles north in Sandusky, Hocking Hills State Park sits about 110 miles south, and Amish Country in Holmes County is only 40 miles east. Each host sets their own mileage policy: some include 100 to 150 free miles per night, while others offer unlimited mileage, which is fantastic for longer loops. Check the listing's mileage section before booking and message the host if you're planning a big route.
nps.gov/cuva/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Ontario, OH?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Ontario, OH include Mohican State Park in Loudonville (about 25 miles southeast), which offers 100+ electric sites and 35 full-hookup sites along the Mohican River; Charles Mill Lake Park in Mansfield (just 15 minutes east), run by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District with lakefront RV sites; Malabar Farm State Park near Lucas, with a quieter, more historic vibe on Louis Bromfield's old farm; and Pleasant Hill Lake Park near Perrysville, with full-hookup sites and a swim beach. ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/mohican-state-parkWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Ontario, OH?
Late spring through mid-fall is prime time for RV camping in Ontario, OH, with the sweet spot running from mid-May through mid-October. Summer highs in Richland County average 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit with warm evenings perfect for campfires, while September and October bring crisp 60 to 70 degree days and spectacular fall foliage through the Mohican forests. Winters are cold (January highs near 35 degrees with regular snowfall), but a heated RV with a winter-ready host opens up cozy holiday trips and quiet off-season rates. Pro tip: book the last weekend of September for peak leaf-peeping along Wally Road, when the hemlocks and hardwoods light up the river valley.
weather.gov/cle/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Ontario, OH a good idea?
Yes, and you're going to do great. Ontario, OH is genuinely beginner-friendly for first time renting an RV because the surrounding roads (US-30, I-71, State Route 13) are flat, well-marked, and free of mountain passes or tight urban driving. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup walking you through driving tips, hookups, slide-outs, the water system, and propane, so you won't be left guessing. If parking and driving still feel intimidating, choose a host who offers delivery and they'll set up the rig at your campground. Start with a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer for your first trip, and consider Mohican State Park as your debut destination, easy in, easy out.
transportation.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odot/programs/highway-safetyWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so help is one phone call away whether you have a flat tire on I-71, a dead battery at Charles Mill Lake, or a propane question at Mohican State Park. Roadside assistance covers needs like towing, lockouts, tire changes, jump-starts, and fuel delivery. Your host is also typically your first text away for quick questions (How do I extend the awning? Why is the fridge beeping?), and RVezy customer support backs you up the entire trip. Ohio is dotted with RV-friendly service stops along US-30 and I-71, so you are rarely far from help.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Ontario, OH RV rental into Canada or other states?
Often yes, with a quick conversation. Many hosts in Ontario, OH allow cross-border travel into Canada (Niagara Falls is only about 320 miles northeast, a popular weekend run), but you must confirm with the host before booking because insurance coverage and host approval are required. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend there. Multi-state US trips are usually no problem: think Pittsburgh (2.5 hours east), Detroit (3.5 hours northwest), or the Smoky Mountains (about 8 hours south). Message the host directly from the listing to confirm your route, and bring your passport if you're heading north of the border.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on an Ontario, OH RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line in your RV budget, and Ohio helps you out with some of the cheapest gas prices in the Great Lakes region. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (mpg), Class A rigs get 6 to 10 mpg, and campervans (Class B) can hit 18 to 22 mpg. With Ontario-area regular gas averaging around $3.10 to $3.40 per gallon, a 200-mile round trip from Ontario to Hocking Hills in a Class C will run roughly $60 to $80 in fuel. Pro tip: fuel up at Pilot or Love's along US-30 or I-71 where RV-friendly pull-through pumps make life much easier than squeezing into a regular gas station.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Ontario, OH?
For peak summer weekends at Mohican State Park, book 4 to 6 months ahead through the Ohio State Parks reservation system at reserveohio.com, especially for full-hookup sites and any Friday or Saturday in June, July, or August. Charles Mill Lake Park (run by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District) and Pleasant Hill Lake Park also fill quickly for holiday weekends, so aim for 2 to 3 months out. For shoulder-season trips in May, September, or October, 2 to 4 weeks is usually plenty. Pro tip: midweek stays (Sunday through Thursday) at Mohican are often wide open even in July, and you'll have the river practically to yourself.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Ontario, OH?
Driving an RV around Ontario, OH is refreshingly straightforward. The area sits on gently rolling farmland with no mountains, sharp grades, or low-clearance tunnels to worry about. US-30 runs right through town as a divided 4-lane highway, I-71 is just 15 minutes east, and State Routes 13 and 39 lead south into Mohican Country with wider shoulders than most rural roads. Watch for occasional deer at dawn and dusk (Richland County has plenty), and in winter expect snow squalls that can drop visibility quickly. Avoid downtown Mansfield's tighter streets in a big rig and stick to US-30 for the smoothest ride. Check current road conditions on OHGO before you head out.
ohgo.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Ontario, OH?
The best campgrounds near Ontario, OH are well-equipped for a smooth stay. Mohican State Park offers electric sites, full-hookup sites with water and sewer, shower houses, a dump station, a seasonal pool, and a camp store. Charles Mill Lake Park offers electric sites, dump stations, potable water fill, and lakefront access for paddling. Most private parks in Richland and Ashland counties (like River Run Family Campground in Loudonville) provide full hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry, and propane refills. Heads-up: Mohican State Park has famously spotty cell service in the river valley, which most guests grow to love. Every state park and most private campgrounds in the area handle dump and water fill for free or a small fee.

A typical motorhome rental in Ontario, OH comes ready to camp with comfortable beds (often sleeping 4 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a private bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with air conditioning and furnace heat, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most rigs include a TV, and many hosts offer Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, awnings, and onboard generators for off-grid stays. Travel trailers and fifth wheels offer similar interior amenities minus the cab. Each RVezy listing spells out exactly what is included, plus what add-ons (like camp chairs, bedding kits, or bikes) are available.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ontario,OhioWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about in Ontario, OH?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular RVezy add-ons in the Ontario, OH area include bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, outdoor camp chairs and tables, fire pits, bike racks, generators for boondocking, and propane refills. Mileage policies vary: some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, while others include 100 to 150 miles per night with a small per-mile fee beyond that. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Ontario, Mansfield, Lexington, or Shelby, and many offer delivery to local campgrounds for a flat fee. Check the listing's add-on section and message the host to bundle anything you need. The clearer you communicate upfront, the smoother the handoff.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ontario,OhioHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book an RV rental in Ontario, OH through RVezy, you pay the full trip cost (nightly rate, fees, and chosen protection plan) through the platform using a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is also placed on your card before the trip; the amount is set by the host and is shown clearly on the listing, typically ranging from $500 to $1,500 for the Ontario area. As long as the RV is returned in the same condition and within the agreed mileage and generator hours, your deposit is released after the trip. Pro tip: take quick photos and a short walkthrough video at pickup and dropoff to keep things smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs a family RV trip from Ontario, OH a good idea for kids?
A family RV trip in Ontario, OH puts you within an hour of incredible kid magnets: tubing and canoeing on the Mohican River with outfitters like Mohican Adventures and Mohican Reservation, Snow Trails ski resort in winter, Gorman Nature Center's free animal exhibits, and the Ohio State Reformatory (the Shawshank Redemption filming location) in nearby Mansfield. Cedar Point in Sandusky is just 75 miles north for a roller-coaster road trip. Look for RVs that sleep 6 to 8 with bunk beds and outdoor TVs, filter by Pet-Friendly if your dog is coming, and consider delivery so the rig is set up and ready when you arrive. It is one of the most memorable family vacations you can plan in Ohio.
