Campgrounds near Peebles, Ohio
Peebles sits in Adams County in the rolling hills of southern Ohio, within the unglaciated Appalachian Plateau. The area is best known as the home of Serpent Mound, the largest documented prehistoric effigy mound in the world and a National Historic Landmark maintained by the Ohio History Connection. For RV travelers, the town works as a base for exploring Amish country along Wheat Ridge Road, the Edge of Appalachia Preserve, and several state parks within an hour's drive.
Campground options range from a large family resort to smaller private and horse camps. Long's Retreat Family Resort in nearby Latham spans more than 400 acres and offers a mix of cabins, camping units, and a lake beach with waterslides. Red Barn Convention Center Campground and Bens Happy Trails Horsemens Camp serve travelers looking for simpler private-park stays, and Bayview Campground Cottages and Bayview Campgrounds round out the local options.
Elevations across the region run roughly 700 to 1,100 feet, and most campgrounds sit in mixed hardwood forest with modest terrain. Cincinnati is about 60 miles west and Columbus about 75 miles north, making Peebles reachable as a weekend trip from either metro.
Things to do near Peebles
Serpent Mound is the signature stop. The site is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., with a per-vehicle parking fee, and closes Mondays plus holidays including Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Guided archaeology tours led by an Ohio History Connection archaeologist run on the second and fourth Fridays of each month during the operating season.
Outside the mound, families can hike Buzzardroost Rock, the Wilderness, and Lynx Prairie in the Edge of Appalachia Preserve, or walk the limestone cliffs at Davis Memorial State Nature Preserve. The Tranquility Wildlife Area covers more than 4,000 acres of public land for hiking and wildlife viewing.
At Long's Retreat, day visitors can use the beach, waterslides, splash pad, go-karts, mini golf, and arcade during the summer season. Wheat Ridge Amish shops and bakeries are a short drive from town.

The southern Ohio camping season generally peaks from April through October. Long's Retreat operates from April 1 through October 31, with daily attractions running Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and most private campgrounds in Adams County follow a similar window. Nearby Ohio State Parks such as Pike Lake, Rocky Fork, and Shawnee keep at least part of their campgrounds open year-round, though many sites and full amenities scale back from November through March.
Summer weekends and holidays fill fastest, especially around Serpent Mound events and the summer solstice, when the site draws visitors to view its solar alignments. Spring tends to be the wettest stretch of the year, with frequent thunderstorms in April and May, so early-summer travelers should plan for muddy sites and pack accordingly.
Fall is a popular alternative. October delivers cooler days, drier weather, and hardwood color across the Appalachian foothills. Winter camping is possible at a handful of state parks, but expect cold nights, occasional snow, and reduced services.

How to book a campsite
Ohio State Park campgrounds within reach of Peebles use a single reservation system at reserveohio.com or through the call center at (866) 644-6727. Campsites and unique rentals such as camper cabins and yurts open six months to the day ahead of the arrival date, while standard cabins open twelve months out. Aside from Jesse Owens State Park, walk-in registration is not offered, so a reservation is required before arrival.
Private campgrounds handle bookings on their own. Long's Retreat takes reservations for cabins only, with annual and seasonal camp spots handled separately, so travelers seeking a nightly RV or tent site should look elsewhere. For Red Barn Convention Center Campground, Bens Happy Trails Horsemens Camp, and the Bayview properties, call the operator directly to confirm site type, hookups, and pet rules. Book summer weekends several weeks in advance and target midweek arrivals for better availability.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the Peebles area wind through rural farmland and forested ridges, and a few campground access roads are narrow. Big rigs should confirm site length and turning radius when booking, especially at smaller private parks. Visitors should also confirm hookup type, amp service, and dump station access directly with each operator, since amenities vary widely across the local parks.
Cell service is inconsistent across Adams County and drops out entirely in some pockets. Long's Retreat, for example, states plainly that there is no cell service and no Wi-Fi on the property, so families relying on streaming or remote work should plan accordingly.
Expect wooded, hilly sites with limestone outcrops and small creeks. Wet weather can leave dirt or gravel sites muddy. Bring a lantern, bug spray for summer visits, and layered clothing for cool spring and fall nights.
