Camping near Philo, Ohio
Philo sits along the Muskingum River in southeastern Ohio, just south of Zanesville in Muskingum County. The area combines river-valley farmland with the wooded hills that mark the western edge of Appalachia, and it puts RV travelers within a short drive of two state parks and a mix of private and public campgrounds.
The closest full-service private option is National Road Campground, with 80 sites offering water and electric hookups, a dump station, flush toilets, and a 43-foot maximum RV length. It sits just off I-70 south of Zanesville and operates on a seasonal schedule, roughly April through October. Wolfies Campground offers another private option in the same corridor.
Public land dominates the rest of the choices. Dillon State Park lies northwest of Philo near Nashport, while Jesse Owens State Park sits to the southeast on reclaimed AEP ReCreation lands. Hook Lake and Sawmill are two of the primitive campgrounds inside Jesse Owens, useful for self-contained rigs that do not need hookups.
Things to do around Philo
Water recreation anchors most trips. Dillon State Park centers on 1,560-acre Dillon Lake with a swimming beach, marina, boat ramps, and fishing for bass, catfish, and crappie. The park also has a disc golf course, hiking trails, and mountain bike trails.
On land, Dillon offers multiple hiking trails plus miles of bridle and mountain bike trails. Jesse Owens State Park adds fishing on several small lakes, hiking, cabin stays, and bison viewing from the Appalachian Hills Wildlife Area Visitor Center, along with the Big Muskie Bucket at Miner's Memorial Park.
For family basecamps, National Road Campground has a playground and a splash pad plus two stocked catch-and-release ponds. Zanesville, a short drive north, has grocery stores, fuel, and the historic Y-Bridge over the Muskingum River.

The prime RV window runs from mid-spring through late fall. The primitive campgrounds at Jesse Owens operate seasonally, generally April 1 to mid-December, and Sand Hollow closes for the winter season. Dillon State Park's family campground and cabins operate year-round under standard Ohio State Parks schedules, with the cabins popular for winter stays.
Summer is the busiest stretch. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill first, and lakeside sites at Dillon are the earliest to book out. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color through Muskingum and Morgan counties, making late September through mid-October a strong shoulder season for RV travel.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Many private and primitive sites reduce services or close entirely, water lines are shut off at unheated bathhouses, and snow or freezing rain can slow rural roads. Travelers arriving December through February should confirm hookups and access with the park or campground directly.

Reservations and booking
Ohio State Park campgrounds use a central reservation system. Reservations are available 24/7 online at reserveohio.com, or by phone at (866) 644-6727. Reservations open 6 months before the arrival date for campsites, and 12 months prior for cabins and day-use facilities. Parks that use the reservation system no longer offer walk-in campsites. This applies to Dillon State Park.
Jesse Owens is the outlier. It is the only Ohio state park that offers first-come, first-served camping with on-site self-registration, which covers Hook Lake and Sawmill among the primitive areas, all at no charge. The newer Big Muskie Campground at Jesse Owens takes reservations through reserveohio.com and offers full hook-up sites.
Private campgrounds like National Road Campground and Wolfies Campground book directly through the operator, and spots fill up during the busy season.
What to expect on site
Site quality varies sharply by campground type. At National Road Campground, sites are gravel and generally arranged around two central ponds, with water and electric at the sites and a dump station near the main office. Expect a small, family-run feel with clean bathhouses and quick interstate access, though several reviewers note some sites need leveling blocks.
Dillon State Park runs a larger campground with electric sites, a shower house, flush toilets, and a dump station, plus a swimming beach and marina. Many sites accommodate large rigs, and a smaller number of full-hookup sites are also available.
The Jesse Owens primitive campgrounds are a different experience. Sites offer pit or vault toilets, a picnic table, and a fire ring, with no water on site, so campers should bring their own. Cell service inside the park is unreliable, so download maps in advance. Hook Lake and Sawmill both fit this pattern.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Philo, OH
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Philo, OH?
RV rental in Philo, OH is one of the most affordable ways to explore southeast Ohio. Expect roughly $90 to $175 per night for travel trailers and campervans, while larger Class A and Class C motorhomes typically range from $200 to $325 per night. Since Philo is just south of Zanesville along the Muskingum River, you'll find a mix of locally owned RVs at small-town prices compared to bigger metros like Columbus. To find a cheap RV rental in Philo, book midweek, travel in May or September shoulder season, and use the price filter on RVezy to sort listings by budget. Pro tip: many hosts knock 10 to 15 percent off weekly bookings, so a 5-night Muskingum River trip often costs less than four separate weekends.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/muskingum-river-water-trailWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Philo, Ohio?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Philo, Ohio. The state of Ohio does not require a commercial driver's license or any special RV endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers used for personal recreation, no matter the size. You'll just need to be at least 25 years old to book through RVezy, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? An International Driving Permit paired with your home country license keeps everything simple at pickup. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly the verification clears, often the same day you book your Philo RV trip.
bmv.ohio.gov/driver-license-id-cards.aspxIs renting an RV in Philo safe and what protection is included?
Every RV rental in Philo, OH booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built into your reservation, so you can explore the Muskingum River Valley with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout, and the plan covers eligible physical damage to the RV during your trip. Review the included roadside benefits before pickup so you know exactly who to call if you get a flat near Blue Rock State Park or need a jump on a chilly morning at the campground. Pro tip: do a thorough walkthrough with your host at pickup and snap dated photos inside and out, it protects everyone and speeds up any claim if something happens on the road.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Philo RV rental?
Booking your Philo RV trip is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy across the platform. That means consistent, traveler-friendly rules whether you book a campervan rental in Philo or a fifth wheel out of Zanesville. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel, and the RVezy support team can help if severe weather or another disruption affects your trip. Pro tip: book earlier rather than later for fall foliage weekends in October. You will lock in the best rigs and still have flexibility under the standard cancellation policy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Philo, Ohio RV rental?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Philo is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you'll see rigs from local hosts who welcome dogs and other pets, sometimes with a small cleaning fee. Once you're in Philo, your pup will love it: Blue Rock State Park, just 15 minutes south, allows leashed dogs on its hiking trails and at most campsites, and the Muskingum River towpath offers easy, shaded walks right along the water. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet details and pack a tie-out leash, since many southeast Ohio campgrounds require dogs to be leashed at the site at all times.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/blue-rock-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Philo?
Yes, RV delivery in Philo is widely available and it's the easiest way to start your trip stress-free. Many RVezy hosts in the Philo and Zanesville area offer delivery directly to nearby campgrounds like Blue Rock State Park, Dillon State Park, or AEP ReCreation Land. They'll tow or drive the RV to your site, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. This is perfect if it's your first time renting an RV or you'd rather skip towing on US-22 or OH-60. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy and check each listing for delivery range and fees, which typically run $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/dillon-state-parkHow do mileage limits work on a Philo RV rental?
Mileage is simple and clearly shown on every listing for your Philo RV trip. Hosts on RVezy set their own daily mileage allowance, and you will see it before you book. Many local hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day, which is plenty for exploring the Muskingum River Valley, Zanesville's Y-Bridge, and Blue Rock State Park. If you are planning a longer RV road trip from Philo, like a loop down to Hocking Hills or east to Wheeling, look for listings with unlimited mileage or higher daily caps. Pro tip: estimate your route in Google Maps and add about 20 percent for side trips, then match that to the listing's mileage policy.

ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/blue-rock-state-parkWhen is the best time of year to plan an RV trip from Philo, OH?

Spring brings 60 to 75 degree days and blooming dogwoods along the Muskingum River. Summer (June to August) runs warm and humid with highs of 82 to 87 degrees, perfect for swimming at Dillon Lake. Fall is the local favorite: from late September through mid-October, the hills around Blue Rock State Park light up in reds and golds, and overnight lows in the 40s make for cozy campfire weather. Winter RVing is possible with a four-season rig, but most campgrounds in Muskingum County close electric hookups from November through March. Pro tip: book your fall foliage weekend by July, it sells out fast.

Pro tip: do a short practice loop on OH-60 north toward Zanesville before heading to your campsite. Twenty minutes of seat time builds huge confidence before you tackle anything bigger.
transportation.ohio.gov/programs/highway/traffic-informationWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
Help is always a phone call away. Every RV rental in Philo, OH booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Your host is also a message away inside the RVezy app for quick questions about quirks specific to their rig. Pro tip: snap photos of the fuse panel, water valves, and propane shutoff during your pickup walkthrough. Many small issues can be solved in five minutes with a quick reference.

Ohio Amish Country around Berlin and Sugarcreek is roughly 60 miles north (about 1 hour 20 minutes). Wheeling, West Virginia sits about 75 miles east via I-70 (around 1 hour 30 minutes). Cuyahoga Valley National Park near Akron is about 130 miles north (2 hours 15 minutes), and Columbus is just 70 miles west (around 1 hour 15 minutes). Budgeting fuel for your Philo RV trip is straightforward. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs run 6 to 10 mpg, and campervans and small travel trailers (towed by your own truck) can stretch to 12 to 18 mpg. Gas prices in Muskingum County usually sit close to the Ohio state average, often a few cents below the national price thanks to nearby refineries. For a typical 4-day, 300-mile loop through Blue Rock, Dillon, and Zanesville in a Class C, plan on roughly $130 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Zanesville or South Zanesville before heading to AEP ReCreation Land. Stations get sparse east of Philo on OH-78.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Philo?
For the best campgrounds near Philo, booking ahead is the move. Ohio State Parks, including Blue Rock and Dillon, open reservations exactly six months in advance through the ReserveOhio system, and prime summer weekends at Dillon's lakeside sites sell out within days. For Memorial Day, July 4th, and fall foliage weekends in October, reserve six months out. For midweek stays or shoulder season trips in May and September, two to four weeks is usually plenty. AEP ReCreation Land just east of Philo doesn't take reservations, you simply get a free permit and pick an open site. Pro tip: set your alarm for 8 a.m. ET on the reservation window opening day for the best lakeside electric sites at Dillon State Park.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/reserve-a-campsite-or-lodgingWhat are driving conditions like around Philo, Ohio?

OH-60 connecting Philo to Zanesville is a well-maintained two-lane with comfortable shoulders, and I-70 is just 15 minutes north for easy access to longer trips. Summer storms can pop up quickly in July and August, so check the radar before heading out. Winter (December through February) can bring snow and ice to back roads like OH-78 and OH-83, which is why most RV trips in Philo run from April through October. Pro tip: avoid the narrow river roads near AEP ReCreation Land after heavy rain, as they occasionally close from flash flooding.

To dump and refill water between trips, the Dillon State Park dump station is open to the public for a small fee. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving the host's place, it's the easiest fill-up of your trip.

Knowing where to park an RV in Philo opens up a lot of options. For overnight stays, your best bets are established campgrounds like Blue Rock State Park, Dillon State Park, and National Road Campground in Zanesville, all within 25 minutes of Philo. AEP ReCreation Land just east of Philo allows free permitted overnight RV camping at hundreds of lakeside sites, a true local secret. For quick stops, the Walmart Supercenter in Zanesville generally allows overnight RV parking (always check with the store manager), and several Pilot and Flying J stations along I-70 welcome overnighters. Street parking large RVs in downtown Philo or Zanesville is restricted, so plan to stage at a campground. Pro tip: pick up your free AEP permit online before you arrive, it takes about two minutes.
