Camping near Pomeroy, Ohio
Pomeroy sits on a horseshoe bend of the Ohio River in Meigs County, in the unglaciated hill country of southeastern Ohio. The area gives RV travelers a mix of full-hookup private resorts and rustic state park campgrounds within a short drive, plus quick access to the West Virginia side of the river.
Kountry Resort Campground in nearby Racine is the closest full-service option, with pull-through sites, full hookups, and family amenities on a large property just off the river corridor. Forked Run State Park, downriver near Reedsville, features a campground, rustic cabins, picnic facilities, hiking trails, a swimming beach, boat ramps, and a disc golf course, and boats over 10HP must operate at a no-wake speed on this 120-acre lake. Strouds Run State Park Campground sits in the scenic Appalachian foothills of Athens County, offering a primitive camping experience surrounded by mixed hardwood forests and overlooking the 161-acre Dow Lake. The campground features 57 non-electric sites, each equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. Water spigots are distributed throughout the campground, and a dump station is located at the entrance. Restroom facilities consist of pit toilets with no showers available.
Carthage Gap Campground and the seasonal Mothman Festival Campground across the river in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, round out the closest lodging clusters.
Things to do around Pomeroy
The Ohio River anchors most trips. Boaters and anglers use the launches at Forked Run State Park, and the park features a 400-foot sand beach, and has several animal species like deer, squirrels, wild turkey, and grouse. Strouds Run offers nearly 2,000 acres of wooded terrain with a marked trail system, plus Dow Lake sits just below the campground, offering swimming at the designated beach, fishing, and non-motorized boating. The park maintains an extensive trail system popular with hikers and mountain bikers, including the well-known Thunderbunny Trail with its ridge views overlooking Athens.
Across the river, Point Pleasant, West Virginia, adds a full day of low-key sightseeing. Visitors stop at the Mothman Museum and the outdoor Mothman statue on Main Street, walk the Point Pleasant River Museum, and follow the floodwall murals that trace local history. Krodel Park in town has a small lake for fishing and paddling. Buffington Island, a Civil War site on the Ohio River, is another short drive from Pomeroy.

Peak camping runs from late spring through early fall, with the busiest weekends built around the Ohio River beaches, holiday weekends, and the September festival calendar across the river. The Mothman Festival is an annual event held every third weekend in September that commemorates the 1966 Point Pleasant, West Virginia, Mothman sighting, and hotels and campgrounds in the area book up fast, so the earlier the reservation, the closer the stay to the festival. RV travelers targeting that weekend should reserve months ahead at any nearby campground.
Shoulder seasons work well for state park stays. Spring brings wildflowers and full lakes but wet trails, while fall delivers reliable color across the Appalachian foothills and cooler nights suited to fire rings. Summer humidity is high and afternoon thunderstorms are common.
Winter camping is limited. At Forked Run State Park, Area 1 is the only camping area open from November 1 through April 1. The showerhouse in Area 1 closes December 5 through April 30. At Strouds Run, in-season rates apply April 1 through the first Sunday in December. Off-season camping available at reduced rates.
How to book a campsite near Pomeroy
Ohio state parks, including Forked Run State Park, book through the Ohio State Parks reservation system, and reservations may be made up to six months in advance online or by calling (866) 644-6727. Strouds Run is a different model: the campground at Strouds Run is operated by a concessionaire under a lease agreement with ODNR. We do not take camping reservations through this site. Campsites are first come, first serve, no reservations are taken. Overnight guests must register and pay on arrival using an envelope found at the campground entrance. Reservations can be made for the group camp and two primitive camper cabins.
West Virginia state parks handle bookings through the official West Virginia State Parks website, and private parks such as Kountry Resort Campground and the Mothman Festival Campground accept direct bookings through the operators. For festival weekend, contact the campground months ahead and confirm site length limits, since some pull-throughs and cabins have length caps.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a split between full-hookup private parks and primitive state park camping. Kountry Resort Campground offers pull-through sites for tents and RVs, full hook-ups with 50 amp service, restrooms, laundry, and family amenities on a large property near the river. State park sites are more basic, with fire rings, picnic tables, and vault or pit toilets in most areas.
Cell coverage in the hills is inconsistent, and Verizon service is available in parts of Forked Run but not throughout. Once you park your rig on the paved pad you'll find a picnic table and fire ring at your site, though pads are often short and sloped; larger fifth wheels and Class A rigs should confirm dimensions before booking.
Summer swim areas can close for water quality, so check park updates before arrival, and pack drinking water for primitive stays where spigots are shared.
