Campgrounds and RV parks near Rio Grande, OH

Water recreation drives most itineraries. Anglers can fish Jackson Lake from shore, pier, or boat for bass, muskie, bluegill, catfish, and carp, with a valid Ohio fishing license required for anyone 16 and older. Boats of any horsepower are allowed on the 242-acre lake as long as they remain at idle speed. At Lake Alma, hand-powered vessels and boats with electric motors only are permitted, and the Lake Alma Boathouse rents canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, pedal boats, and pontoon boats in spring, summer, and fall. On land, hiking trails and a paved path around the lake make Lake Alma a good pick for families with kids or dogs. Zaleski State Forest offers longer backcountry loops and roughly 50 miles of bridle trails, along with the historic Moonville Tunnel and remnants of the region's iron-furnace era.

Southeast Ohio has a four-season climate, and campground availability tracks it closely. Jackson Lake State Park Campground is open seasonally, generally running early April through mid-December, and drinking water is limited or shut off in shoulder months, so RV renters should arrive with full fresh tanks in the off-season. Lake Alma State Park is open year-round, which makes it the more reliable base for late-fall foliage trips and mild winter weekends. Note that full-hookup sites at Lake Alma provide electric only during winter months. Summer weekends fill first at both parks: booking six months out is standard practice for holiday weeks, and mid-week arrivals typically have far more inventory than Friday or Saturday check-ins. Spring brings green-up and higher creek flows through the Hocking and Zaleski areas. Mid-October is peak foliage in the Appalachian foothills, and it overlaps with the Mothman Festival across the river, which spikes local demand for any site within a short drive of Point Pleasant.

Site footprints in this region skew small. Jackson Lake accommodates RVs up to 35 feet with 50-amp electric hookups, and Lake Alma's campground has 83 sites, though site dimensions vary significantly and some prove too short for larger rigs. Verify length and slide clearance against the specific site number before booking. Hookup mix is limited. At Lake Alma, 6 sites offer full hookups, 67 are electric-only, and 10 are primitive, so full-hookup inventory books earliest. Jackson Lake provides vault toilets, potable water, and a dump station, with sites offering fire rings and picnic tables. Expect basic bathhouses, tightly spaced neighbors on peak weekends, and quiet hours enforced overnight. Quiet hours run 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM, and a maximum of two vehicles per site applies at Lake Alma.
