Campgrounds near Scio, Ohio
Scio sits in Harrison County in eastern Ohio, within easy driving distance of several Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) lakes. The MWCD system manages a chain of reservoirs built behind flood-control dams, and those lakes now anchor most of the region's public camping. Petersburg Marina Muskingum Conservancy District and Clendening Marina Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist are among the closest MWCD facilities, with Tappan Lake Park Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist a short drive north along U.S. Route 250.
Tappan Lake Park Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist is the largest full-service option in the immediate area, offering more than 500 campsites, rental cabins, a swimming beach, and a marina. Clendening Marina Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist sits on a lake known for its undeveloped shoreline and keeps a quieter, more primitive profile. Atwood Lake Park Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist, farther northwest, adds additional sites, cabins, and a popular sailing lake.
For a private-park alternative with pull-throughs and standard resort amenities, Carrollton KOA Holiday is within a reasonable drive and works well as a base for exploring the MWCD lakes.
Things to do near Scio
Water recreation drives most trips to this corner of Ohio. Tappan Lake permits larger motors and supports boating, water skiing, and tubing, while Clendening Lake enforces a 10-horsepower limit that keeps the water quiet for anglers chasing bass, saugeye, panfish, and catfish. Atwood Lake is a regional favorite for sailing and pleasure boating.
On land, Tappan Lake Park has roughly 8 miles of hiking trails and connects to the Tappan Wetlands watchable wildlife area. Swimming beaches, playgrounds, and picnic areas are available at Tappan and Atwood.
Off-park attractions within an easy drive include the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Amish Country shops and bakeries around Sugarcreek, and the Schoenbrunn Village historical site near New Philadelphia.

The main camping season in the MWCD system runs from spring through fall. Seasonal camping permits at Tappan, Clendening, Atwood, and the other MWCD lakes cover a seven-month window from April 1 through October 31, and most amenities including marinas, beaches, and cabin rentals track that same calendar. Carrollton KOA Holiday operates on a similar seasonal schedule, roughly mid-spring through mid-fall.
Summer weekends and holidays are the busiest stretch, especially at Tappan Lake Park Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist and Atwood Lake Park Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist, where waterfront and full-hookup sites turn over quickly. Fall brings cooler nights, lower demand, and foliage across the eastern Ohio hills; the Atwood Fall Festival draws additional visitors and holiday surcharges apply during that event.
Winter camping is limited. Most MWCD campgrounds close for the off-season, and Clendening in particular is known for solitude and undeveloped shoreline rather than year-round services. Travelers planning December through March visits should confirm which sites, if any, remain open.

How to book
MWCD campgrounds, including Tappan Lake Park Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist, Clendening Marina Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist, Petersburg Marina Muskingum Conservancy District, and Atwood Lake Park Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist, all use the same central reservation system at reserve.mwcd.org. The booking window opens up to 12 months ahead of arrival, and prime waterfront and full-hookup sites at Tappan and Atwood are the first to fill for summer weekends.
Reservations are limited to 14 consecutive nights per booking, and non-consecutive dates require separate reservations. Quiet hours run from 11 PM to 7 AM in all MWCD parks. Campers must check in at the gate or park office on arrival.
Carrollton KOA Holiday books directly through the KOA network rather than the MWCD system.
What to expect
Expect rural, lake-oriented camping with a mix of full-hookup, electric-only, and primitive sites. Tappan Lake Park Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist and Atwood Lake Park Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist offer the widest range of amenities: 30-amp electric on standard sites, some 50-amp full-hookup premium lots on concrete pads, laundry, playgrounds, swimming beaches, and marinas with boat and dock rentals.
Clendening Marina Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist is smaller and more rustic, with a mix of electric and primitive sites in a quiet, wooded setting. Cell service is weak around the more remote MWCD lakes, so download maps and confirmations in advance.
Pets are allowed at MWCD campsites on a leash no longer than 6 feet, cannot be left unattended, and are only permitted in specific pet-friendly cabins.
