Campgrounds and RV parks near Somerset, OH

Dillon State Park is the anchor for outdoor activity in the area. It offers a swimming beach, boat ramps, hiking trails ranging from short family walks to longer wooded routes, disc golf near the campground, and access to Dillon Lake for boating and fishing. Riders come to the region for the Perry State Forest APV area, which has designated trails for all-purpose vehicles and dirt bikes on reclaimed mining terrain. Buckeye Lake, a large reservoir northwest of Somerset, draws boaters and anglers, and the KOA there adds mini golf, a pool, a jumping pillow, shuffleboard, and a fenced dog area. Day trips are practical from Somerset: the Columbus Zoo, COSI science center, The Wilds animal preserve, and Ohio Amish Country are all within reasonable driving distance.

Peak camping season in central Ohio runs from late May through early October. Summer weekends at Dillon State Park book heavily with families, and the Buckeye Lake KOA fills quickly during holiday weekends and race events at the nearby National Trail Raceway. The shoulder months of May and September are typically easier for last-minute reservations and offer milder daytime temperatures. Late spring and early summer bring the wettest stretch, with May and June averaging the highest rainfall of the year. Trails at Dillon and Perry State Forest can stay muddy well into April, and the Perry APV area operates on a posted seasonal schedule tied to trail conditions. Dillon State Park keeps a portion of its main campground open year-round, with off-peak services from November 1 through April 1 limited to shower house A and the dump station, with no rinse water. The Buckeye Lake KOA operates seasonally, with on-site recreation running from April 1 through November 1. Fall is popular for foliage: the hardwood ridges around Somerset color up from mid-October into early November.

Terrain around Somerset is hilly and wooded. At Dillon State Park, sites are spread across rolling hills with restrooms, shower houses, and playgrounds; many pads are at least partially shaded. Leveling blocks are useful because not every pad sits perfectly flat. The campground has full-hookup, electric, and non-electric sites, with most RV pads sized to handle rigs in the 25 to 60 foot range. The KOA is a full-service park with pull-through and back-in sites, 30 and 50 amp full-hookup options, rustic and deluxe cabins, and family amenities including a pool and jumping pillow. It sits close to I-70 but is set back enough to limit highway noise. Expect humid summers with afternoon thunderstorms, biting insects near the reservoir in June and July, and deer and other wildlife around Dillon after dusk. Cell coverage is generally reliable but can drop off in the state forest.
