Campgrounds and RV parks near South Amherst, OH

South Amherst sits in Lorain County in northern Ohio, roughly 30 miles west of Cleveland and a short drive from the Lake Erie shoreline. The village is known for the deep sandstone quarries just north of town, which reach a maximum thickness of more than 200 feet and are among the largest sandstone quarries in the world. The location makes a practical base for RV travelers who want lake access, state park camping, and quick highway connections to both Cleveland and Sandusky. Campground options within a reasonable drive cover a range of styles. Timber Ridge Campground and American Wilderness Campground offer private-park amenities close to town, while Riverview RV Park and Marina puts sites near boating access on the Vermilion River. Families looking for larger resort-style stays often choose Claremar Twin Lakes Camping Resort, which sits south of Wellington near the Findley State Park area. For a public-land experience, Findley State Park is the closest Ohio state park campground and the anchor of the region's outdoor recreation.

Findley State Park reservations are handled through the Ohio State Parks system. Sites can be booked up to six months in advance online through the ODNR reservation portal or by calling 866-644-6727, and Ohio does not charge a state park entrance fee. Summer weekends and the limited full-hookup sites go first, so booking early matters. Private parks each use their own systems. Claremar Twin Lakes Camping Resort takes reservations directly through its website and phone line, and Timber Ridge Campground, Riverview RV Park and Marina, and American Wilderness Campground handle bookings the same way. For holiday weekends, most operators recommend reserving several months ahead and confirming rig length, hookup type, and pet policies before arrival.
