Camping near South Russell, Ohio
South Russell is a small village in Geauga County, part of the Cleveland metropolitan area in northeast Ohio. It sits on the western edge of Ohio's snow belt at roughly 1,200 feet of elevation, surrounded by rolling farmland, hardwood forest, and the kettle lakes left behind by the last glaciation. For RV travelers, that translates into a cluster of campgrounds within a short drive, plus quick access to Cleveland, Akron, and Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
The closest option is Maywood Community in Chesterland, a small RV park with hookup sites. A few miles south, Punderson State Park is a 741-acre public recreation area in Newbury, Ohio, featuring a 150-acre lake along with electric and full-hookup sites, cabins, and a historic manor house lodge. Farther out toward Streetsboro and Mantua, Roundup Lake RV Park, Woodside Lake Park, and the Streetsboro / Cleveland SE KOA Holiday round out the main RV-friendly properties.
Most of these campgrounds sit within a 20- to 30-minute drive of South Russell, making the village a convenient base for touring northeast Ohio without moving the rig each day.
Things to do around South Russell
Punderson State Park anchors most itineraries. The park has facilities for swimming, fishing, camping, golf, disc golf, and sledding in wintertime. Hiking trails, a swimming beach, and hand-powered boating on the natural kettle lake round out the summer offerings, and anglers work Punderson Lake for bass, bluegill, and stocked trout.
At Roundup Lake RV Park and Woodside Lake Park, families get swim lakes, sandy beaches, paddle craft, mini golf, playgrounds, and organized weekend activities aimed at kids. The Streetsboro / Cleveland SE KOA Holiday puts campers within a short drive of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, where the Towpath Trail, Brandywine Falls, and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad are the main draws. Downtown Chagrin Falls, a walkable historic village with the namesake waterfall in the middle of town, is minutes from South Russell itself.

Peak RV season runs late May through mid-October, with July and August the busiest months at both state and private parks. Summer weekends at Punderson State Park routinely sell out, and private resorts like Roundup Lake RV Park and Woodside Lake Park fill their lake-view and full-hookup sites first. Booking six to eight weeks ahead is realistic for summer holiday weekends.
Spring shoulder season, roughly late April through May, brings mud, mosquitoes, and unsettled weather, but sites are plentiful. Fall is the strongest value window: cooler nights, low bug pressure, and hardwood color that peaks in mid-October across Geauga County.
Winter camping is limited. Water and sewer are not available during winter season beginning October 31 at Punderson State Park, though the campground itself stays open on a reduced basis. Most private campgrounds in the Streetsboro and Mantua area close for the season and reopen in spring. Lake-effect snow off Lake Erie can drop heavy accumulations here, so winter arrivals should watch forecasts closely.

Used James' toy hauler off grid for 3 days. Battery and generator worked well. Hot water for showers too. Everything worked as listed. James delivered and set up the camper at the campground for us and was very easy and professional to work with.

How to book a site
Punderson State Park is reserved through the Ohio State Parks system at reserveohio.com. Reservations are required for all sites and may be made up to six months in advance online or by calling (866) 644-6727. Popular electric and full-hookup sites go fast for summer weekends, and a cancellation-alert service can help if the dates you want are full.
Private campgrounds handle their own bookings directly. Roundup Lake RV Park, Woodside Lake Park, and Streetsboro / Cleveland SE KOA Holiday all take reservations through their websites or by phone, and holiday weekends often carry minimum-stay requirements. Maywood Community is a small park that requires advance reservations and is best arranged by phone.
For RV rentals delivered to a site, confirm with the campground first that drop-off and setup by a third party is permitted.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around South Russell is wooded and gently rolling, and campground sites reflect that. The 201-site Punderson campground offers shower houses, flush toilets, electricity and pet camping, and two full hookup sites also include water and sewer service. Pads vary in size and levelness, and some sites need extensive blocking for larger rigs.
Private resorts like Roundup Lake RV Park and Woodside Lake Park lean family-oriented, with pull-through and back-in RV sites, cabins, and heavy weekend activity programming. Expect kids on bikes, evening hayrides in season, and busy pools and beaches on Saturdays.
Cell coverage is generally reliable across Geauga and Portage counties. Mosquitoes are aggressive near the kettle lakes from May through August, so bring repellent. Black bears are rare but present in the region, so standard food-storage practices apply.
