Thornport camping overview
Thornport is a small unincorporated community in Perry County, Ohio, sitting on the eastern end of Buckeye Lake in the central part of the state. Buckeye Lake, constructed as a canal feeder lake in 1826, is Ohio's oldest state park, and has long been a popular vacation spot offering water-related recreation including swimming, boating, and fishing. The area draws RV travelers for its combination of lake access, easy interstate connections via I-70, and proximity to Columbus, roughly 30 miles to the west. Campgrounds within a short drive range from a full-service KOA on the lake to family-oriented resort parks tucked into the surrounding countryside, along with smaller riverside and rural options. A kayak and canoe launch is available on the east end of the lake near Thornport, maintained by Thorn Township. Anglers target perch, bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, and channel catfish on the lake. The mix of lake recreation, small-town Ohio charm, and quick access to Columbus, Newark, and Granville makes Thornport a practical base for exploring central Ohio.
Things to do near Thornport
Buckeye Lake anchors the local recreation scene, with boating, fishing, swimming, and paddling on its roughly 3,000 acres. A kayak and canoe launch sits on the east end of the lake near Thornport, maintained by Thorn Township. Cranberry Bog State Nature Preserve, a small floating bog and National Natural Landmark, sits in the middle of the lake and is accessible by boat during limited public tours. Granville, about 20 miles north, offers a walkable historic village with shops and restaurants, while Newark provides access to the Great Circle and Octagon Earthworks, part of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks UNESCO World Heritage designation. Columbus attractions, including the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and the Ohio State Fairgrounds, are within an hour's drive. Cyclists use the T.J. Evans Trail through Licking County for flat, paved rides.

Camping season in the Buckeye Lake area centers on the warm months, roughly April through October, when private parks run full activity schedules and lake recreation is at its peak. The KOA Holiday at Buckeye Lake operates on a seasonal calendar running April through October, which is typical of the region's private RV parks, while a handful of parks such as Lazy River At Granville stay open year round with reduced services in the colder months. Summer weekends and holiday periods, especially around Independence Day and Labor Day, book out well in advance because of lake traffic and proximity to Columbus. Spring brings unsettled weather and higher water, and late spring can be wet, so hookup sites are more comfortable than tent camping during that stretch. Fall is a strong shoulder season, with cool nights, changing foliage in the Welsh Hills to the north, and lighter crowds. Winter camping is limited to a few year-round parks and generally attracts long-stay and seasonal RVers rather than short trips.

Booking campgrounds near Thornport
Most campgrounds near Thornport are privately operated and take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone rather than through a central portal. Buckeye Lake / Columbus East KOA Holiday books through the KOA reservation system, and popular summer weekends typically fill several months ahead. Lazy River At Granville, The Grove By The River, Hidden Hill Campground, and Lakeview RV Park and Campground handle bookings through their own offices, with seasonal and monthly options available at several of the parks. For state-park camping in the broader region, Ohio State Parks uses ReserveAmerica for reservations. Booking six to eight weeks ahead is a reasonable target for summer weekends, and earlier for holidays or events in Columbus.

Expect a mix of shaded and open sites, 30 and 50 amp electric at most RV parks, and cellular coverage that is generally reliable across the area. Roads into the campgrounds are paved and suitable for larger rigs, though some interior loops can be tight.
