Campgrounds and RV parks near Utica, OH

Water and trails drive most trips here. Kokosing Valley Camp and Canoe sits on the State Scenic Kokosing River near the Kokosing Gap Trail, with canoes, kayaks, and inner tubes available to rent. The Kokosing is known for trophy smallmouth bass fishing. On the Licking County side, families often combine a day at Dawes Arboretum, which spans nearly 2,000 acres with about 12 miles of hiking trails and a four-mile driving tour, with a stop at Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve for its bike path and river-corridor trails. Ye Olde Mill in Utica houses Velvet Ice Cream and Ohio's only ice cream museum, along with a restaurant, catch-and-release fishing pond, and playgrounds on the surrounding acreage. Downtown Granville and downtown Newark add restaurants, breweries, and the Newark Earthworks for a rest-day itinerary.

Central Ohio has four distinct seasons and no dry period. Columbus, the nearest major reference station, has a humid continental climate with humid, hot summers and cold winters. That pattern carries through Utica as well, and most private campgrounds here run a seasonal calendar built around it. Late spring through early fall is the core camping window. Pools, canoe liveries, and activity programs typically start around Memorial Day weekend and wind down after Labor Day or mid-October, with Kokosing Valley operating from early May into mid-October. Summer weekends and holiday weekends book up first, especially at family parks with pools and organized activities. Fall brings cooler nights, hardwood color, and quieter sites, but water hookups may be shut off at some parks late in the season. Winter camping is limited in the area, with many private parks closed for the off-season. Spring can be muddy and unpredictable, with river levels rising after storms, which affects paddling plans on the Kokosing and Licking.

Expect small to mid-sized family parks rather than resort-style destinations. Grassy or gravel sites, mature shade trees, and a mix of full-hookup and water-and-electric sites are typical. Bathhouses, dump stations, laundry, and camp stores are common at the larger properties. Activity-heavy amenities are a feature of the area. Parks like Lazy River At Granville lean into pools, mini golf, game rooms, and family activity programs, with camp stores, laundry, and dump stations rounding out the services. Kokosing Valley provides water and electric sites, a dump station, restrooms, hot showers, laundry, propane, firewood, ice, shelters, miniature golf, a driving range, and a heated pool, along with on-site canoe, kayak, and tube rentals. Cell coverage is generally usable but not guaranteed in river valleys. Pets are commonly welcome on leash, and quiet hours are enforced at most family parks.
